1 M oreover Elihu answered and said,

Elihu riprese a parlare e disse:

2 H ear my words, ye wise men; And give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

«Ascoltate, o saggi, le mie parole, e voi, dotti, prestatemi orecchio!

3 F or the ear trieth words, As the palate tasteth food.

Poiché l'orecchio esamina le parole, come il palato assapora i cibi.

4 L et us choose for us that which is right: Let us know among ourselves what is good.

Scegliamo noi stessi ciò che è giusto, riconosciamo fra noi ciò che è buono.

5 F or Job hath said, I am righteous, And God hath taken away my right:

Poiché Giobbe ha detto: Sono giusto ma Dio ha tolto via la mia giustizia.

6 N otwithstanding my right I am accounted a liar; My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.

Dovrei mentire contro la mia giustizia? La mia ferita è incurabile, benché sia senza peccato".

7 W hat man is like Job, Who drinketh up scoffing like water,

Chi è come Giobbe, che beve la derisione come l'acqua,

8 W ho goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, And walketh with wicked men?

che cammina in compagnia dei malfattori e vada assieme ai malvagi?

9 F or he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing That he should delight himself with God.

Poiché ha detto: "Non giova nulla all'uomo riporre il proprio diletto in DIO

10 T herefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, And from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

Ascoltatemi dunque, o uomini di senno! Lungi da Dio l'iniquità e dall'Onnipotente la malvagità!

11 F or the work of a man will he render unto him, And cause every man to find according to his ways.

Poiché egli rende all'uomo secondo le sue opere e fa trovare a ognuno il salario della sua condotta.

12 Y ea, of a surety, God will not do wickedly, Neither will the Almighty pervert justice.

Certamente Dio non compie il male e l'Onnipotente non sovverte la giustizia.

13 W ho gave him a charge over the earth? Or who hath disposed the whole world?

Chi gli ha affidato la cura della terra, o chi lo ha costituito sul mondo intero?

14 I f he set his heart upon himself, If he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;

Se Dio dovesse decidere in cuor suo di ritirare a sé il suo Spirito e il suo soffio,

15 A ll flesh shall perish together, And man shall turn again unto dust.

ogni carne perirebbe assieme, e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere,

16 I f now thou hast understanding, hear this: Hearken to the voice of my words.

Se hai intendimento, ascolta questo, porgi orecchio a ciò che ti dico.

17 S hall even one that hateth justice govern? And wilt thou condemn him that is righteous and mighty?-

Uno che odia la giustizia potrebbe governare? Osi tu condannare il Giusto, il Potente?

18 H im that saith to a king, Thou art vile, Or to nobles, Ye are wicked;

Lui che dice a un re, "Sei spregevole" e ai principi: "Siete malvagi".

19 T hat respecteth not the persons of princes, Nor regardeth the rich more than the poor; For they all are the work of his hands.

Ma egli non usa alcuna parzialità con i grandi né considera il ricco piú del povero, perché sono tutti opera delle sue mani.

20 I n a moment they die, even at midnight; The people are shaken and pass away, And the mighty are taken away without hand.

In un attimo, essi muoiono nel cuore della notte la gente è scossa e scompare, i potenti son portati via senza mano d'uomo.

21 F or his eyes are upon the ways of a man, And he seeth all his goings.

Poiché egli tiene gli occhi sulle vie dell'uomo, e vede tutti i suoi passi.

22 T here is no darkness, nor thick gloom, Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

Non vi sono tenebre né ombra di morte, dove possano nascondersi i malfattori.

23 F or he needeth not further to consider a man, That he should go before God in judgment.

Dio infatti non ha bisogno di osservare a lungo un uomo prima di farlo comparire davanti a sé in giudizio.

24 H e breaketh in pieces mighty men in ways past finding out, And setteth others in their stead.

Egli fiacca i potenti senza fare inchiesta e ne mette altri al loro posto.

25 T herefore he taketh knowledge of their works; And he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

Poiché conosce le loro opere, li abbatte nella notte e sono distrutti;

26 H e striketh them as wicked men In the open sight of others;

li colpisce come gente malvagia alla vista di tutti.

27 B ecause they turned aside from following him, And would not have regard in any of his ways:

perché si sono allontanati da lui senza prestare attenzione alle sue vie,

28 S o that they caused the cry of the poor to come unto him, And he heard the cry of the afflicted.

fino a far giungere a lui il grido a del povero, perché egli ode il grido degli afflitti.

29 W hen he giveth quietness, who then can condemn? And when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? Alike whether it be done unto a nation, or unto a man:

Quando Dio dà tranquillità, chi lo condannerà? Quando nasconde il suo volto, chi potrà vederlo, sia contro un'intera nazione o un sol uomo,

30 T hat the godless man reign not, That there be none to ensnare the people.

per impedire all'empio di regnare e al popolo di essere preso da lacci?

31 F or hath any said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:

Può uno dire a Dio: "Io porto la mia pena non farò piú il male;

32 T hat which I see not teach thou me: If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more?

mostrami ciò che non riesco a vedere; se ho commesso qualche iniquità, non lo farò piú"?

33 S hall his recompense be as thou wilt, that thou refusest it? For thou must choose, and not I: Therefore speak what thou knowest.

Dovrebbe egli ricompensare in base alle tue condizioni, perché tu rifiuti il suo giudizio? Tu devi scegliere e non io; perciò di ciò che sai.

34 M en of understanding will say unto me, Yea, every wise man that heareth me:

La gente assennata, come ogni uomo saggio che mi ascolta, mi dirà:

35 J ob speaketh without knowledge, And his words are without wisdom.

"Giobbe parla senza intendimento, le sue parole sono prive di sapienza

36 W ould that Job were tried unto the end, Because of his answering like wicked men.

Sia dunque Giobbe provato sino alla fine, perché le sue risposte sono come quelle degli uomini malvagi,

37 F or he addeth rebellion unto his sin; He clappeth his hands among us, And multiplieth his words against God.

perché aggiunge al suo peccato la ribellione, batte le mani in mezzo a noi e moltiplica le sue parole contro Dio».
