1 D ead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to send forth an evil odor; so doth a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.

5 T here is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

6 f olly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.

la follia è posta in cariche elevate, mentre i ricchi seggono in luoghi bassi.

7 I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.

Ho visto servi a cavallo e principi camminare a piedi come servi.

8 H e that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a wall, a serpent shall bite him.

Chi scava una fossa vi può cadere dentro, e chi demolisce un muro può essere morso da una serpe.

9 W hoso heweth out stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.

Chi sposta delle pietre può esserne ferito, e chi spacca la legna si mette in pericolo.

10 I f the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

Se la scure è smussata e non se ne affila il taglio, bisogna usare maggior forza, ma la sapienza ha il vantaggio di riuscire sempre.

11 I f the serpent bite before it is charmed, then is there no advantage in the charmer.

Se il serpente morde perché non è stato incantato, l'incantatore diventa inutile.

12 T he words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

Le parole della bocca del saggio sono piene di grazia, ma le labbra dello stolto lo distruggono.

13 T he beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

14 A fool also multiplieth words: yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?

15 T he labor of fools wearieth every one of them; for he knoweth not how to go to the city.

16 W oe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

Guai a te, o paese, il cui re è un fanciullo, e i cui principi pranzano fin dal mattino!

17 H appy art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

Beato te, o paese, il cui re è di stirpe nobile, e i cui principi pranzano al tempo giusto, per ristorare le forze e non per ubriacarsi!

18 B y slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.

Per la pigrizia le travi della casa crollano, e per l'inattività delle mani piove in casa.

19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things.

Un banchetto è fatto per divertirsi, e il vino rallegra la vita, ma il denaro viene incontro ad ogni bisogno.

20 R evile not the king, no, not in thy thought; and revile not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the heavens shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

Non maledire il re neppure col pensiero, e non maledire il ricco nella tua camera da letto, perché un uccello del cielo potrebbe portare lontano la tua voce, e un uccello in volo potrebbe riferire la cosa.
