1 A nd Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

Poi Giosuè radunò tutte le tribú d'Israele a Sichem, e convocò gli anziani d'Israele, i suoi capi i suoi giudici e i suoi ufficiali, che si presentarono davanti a DIO.

2 A nd Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.

E Giosuè disse a tutto il popolo: Così parla l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: "Nei tempi passati, i vostri padri, come Terah padre di Abrahamo e padre di Nahor abitarono di là dal fiume e servirono altri dèi.

3 A nd I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

Io presi il vostro padre Abrahamo di là dal fiume, gli feci percorrere tutto il paese di Canaan, e moltiplicai la sua discendenza e gli diedi Isacco.

4 A nd I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it: and Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

Ad Isacco diedi Giacobbe ed Esaù; e ad Esaù diedi in eredità la montagna di Seir; ma Giacobbe e i suoi figli scesero in Egitto.

5 A nd I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in the midst thereof: and afterward I brought you out.

Poi mandai Mosè ed Aaronne e colpii l'Egitto con quello che feci in mezzo ad esso; dopo ciò vi feci uscire.

6 A nd I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen unto the Red Sea.

Così feci uscire dall'Egitto i vostri padri, e voi arrivaste al mare. Gli Egiziani inseguirono i vostri padri con carri e cavalieri fino al Mar Rosso.

7 A nd when they cried out unto Jehovah, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days.

Ma essi gridarono all'Eterno, ed egli pose fitte tenebre fra voi e gli Egiziani; poi fece venire sopra loro il mare, che li ricoperse; e i vostri occhi videro ciò che feci agli Egiziani. Poi dimoraste lungo tempo nel deserto.

8 A nd I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that dwelt beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and ye possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

Io vi condussi quindi nel paese degli Amorei, che abitavano di là del Giordano; essi combatterono contro di voi e io li diedi nelle vostre mani; voi prendeste possesso del loro paese e io li distrussi davanti a voi.

9 T hen Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel: and he sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you;

Poi Balak, figlio di Tsippor, re di Moab, si levò a muovere guerra contro Israele; e mandò a chiamare Balaam, figlio di Beor, perché vi maledicesse;

10 b ut I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

ma io non volli ascoltare Balaam; perciò egli vi benedisse grandemente, e vi liberai dalle mani di Balak.

11 A nd ye went over the Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

Passaste poi il Giordano e arrivaste a Gerico; gli abitanti di Gerico combatterono contro di voi, e così fecero gli Amorei, i Perezei, i Cananei, gli Hittei, i Ghirgasei, gli Hivvei e i Gebusei; ma io li diedi nelle vostre mani.

12 A nd I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

E mandai davanti a voi i calabroni, che li scacciarono davanti a voi, com'era avvenuto dei due re degli Amorei; ma ciò non fu per la tua spada o per il tuo arco.

13 A nd I gave you a land whereon thou hadst not labored, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell therein; of vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

E vi diedi una terra per cui non avevate lavorato e delle città che non avevate costruito, e voi abitate in esse; e ora mangiate il frutto delle vigne e degli uliveti che non avete piantato".

14 N ow therefore fear Jehovah, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt; and serve ye Jehovah.

Perciò ora temete l'Eterno e servitelo con integrità e fedeltà; e togliete via gli dèi che i vostri padri servirono di là dal fiume e in Egitto, e servite l'Eterno.

15 A nd if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah.

E se vi pare cattiva cosa servire l'Eterno, scegliete oggi chi volete servire, o gli dèi che servirono i vostri padri di là dal fiume, o gli dèi degli Amorei, nel cui paese voi abitate; quanto a me e alla mia casa, serviremo l'Eterno».

16 A nd the people answered and said, Far be it from us that we should forsake Jehovah, to serve other gods;

Allora il popolo rispose e disse: «Lungi da noi abbandonare l'Eterno per servire altri dèi!

17 f or Jehovah our God, he it is that brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and that did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed;

Poiché l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, è colui che ha fatto uscire noi e i nostri padri dal paese d'Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitú, che ha fatto quei grandi prodigi davanti ai nostri occhi e ci ha protetti per tutta la strada che abbiamo percorso e fra tutti i popoli in mezzo ai quali siamo passati;

18 a nd Jehovah drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites that dwelt in the land: therefore we also will serve Jehovah; for he is our God.

e l'Eterno ha scacciato davanti a noi tutti i popoli, e gli Amorei che abitavano il paese; perciò anche noi serviremo l'Eterno, perché egli è il nostro DIO».

19 A nd Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve Jehovah; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgression nor your sins.

Ma Giosuè disse al popolo: «Voi non potete servire l'Eterno, perch'egli è un DIO santo, è un Dio geloso; egli non perdonerà le vostre trasgressioni e i vostri peccati.

20 I f ye forsake Jehovah, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

Quando abbandonerete l'Eterno e servirete dèi stranieri, egli si volterà, vi farà del male e vi consumerà, dopo avervi fatto tanto bene».

21 A nd the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve Jehovah.

il popolo disse a Giosuè: «No, ma noi serviremo l'Eterno».

22 A nd Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you Jehovah, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

Allora Giosuè disse al popolo: «Voi siete testimoni contro voi stessi, che avete scelto per voi l'Eterno per servirgli!». Essi risposero: «Siamo testimoni!».

23 N ow therefore put away, said he, the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto Jehovah, the God of Israel.

Giosuè disse: «Togliete dunque via gli dèi stranieri che sono in mezzo a voi e inclinate il vostro cuore all'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele!».

24 A nd the people said unto Joshua, Jehovah our God will we serve, and unto his voice will we hearken.

Il popolo rispose a Giosuè: «Noi serviremo l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, e ubbidiremo alla sua voce».

25 S o Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

Così Giosuè Fece in quel giorno un patto col popolo, e gli diede degli statuti e dei decreti a Sichem.

26 A nd Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.

Poi Giosuè scrisse queste cose nel libro della legge di DIO; e prese una grande pietra e la eresse là sotto la quercia, presso il santuario dell'Eterno.

27 A nd Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of Jehovah which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.

Giosuè disse quindi a tutto il popolo: «Ecco, questa pietra sarà un testimone contro di noi, perché essa ha udito tutte le parole che l'Eterno ci ha detto; essa servirà quindi da testimone contro di voi, affinché non rinneghiate il vostro DIO».

28 S o Joshua sent the people away, every man unto his inheritance.

Giosuè quindi rimandò il popolo, ciascuno alla propria eredità.

29 A nd it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being a hundred and ten years old.

Dopo queste cose, Giosuè figlio di Nun, servo dell'Eterno, morì in età di centodieci anni,

30 A nd they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

e lo seppellirono nel territorio di sua proprietà a Timnath-Serah, che è nella regione montuosa di Efraim al nord del monte Gaash.

31 A nd Israel served Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of Jehovah, that he had wrought for Israel.

Israele servì l'Eterno durante tutta la vita di Giosuè e durante tutta la vita degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè e che conoscevano tutte le opere che l'Eterno aveva fatto per Israele.

32 A nd the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

Le ossa di Giuseppe, che i figli d'Israele avevano portato dall'Egitto, e seppellirono a Sichem, nella parte di campo che Giacobbe aveva comprato dai figli di Hamor, padre di Sichem, per cento pezzi d'argento, e che era divenuto proprietà dei figli di Giuseppe.

33 A nd Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill-country of Ephraim.

Poi morì anche Eleazar, figlio di Aaronne, e lo seppellirono al monte, che apparteneva a suo figlio Finehas, dato a lui nella regione montuosa di Efraim.
