1 H owbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, And hearken to all my words.

«Ora dunque, Giobbe, ascolta ciò che ho da dire e porgi orecchio a tutte le mie parole!

2 B ehold now, I have opened my mouth; My tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

Ecco, io apro la bocca e la mia lingua parla nella mia bocca.

3 M y words shall utter the uprightness of my heart; And that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

Le mie parole vengono da un cuore retto, le mie labbra proferiranno pura conoscenza.

4 T he Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

Lo Spirito di Dio mi ha fatto e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi dà la vita,

5 I f thou canst, answer thou me; Set thy words in order before me, stand forth.

Se puoi, rispondimi; preparati pure a difendere le tue posizioni.

6 B ehold, I am toward God even as thou art: I also am formed out of the clay.

Ecco, io sono uguale a te davanti a Dio; anch'io sono stato formato dall'argilla.

7 B ehold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

Ecco, nessuna paura di me ti dovrebbe spaventare, e la mia mano non graverà su di te.

8 S urely thou hast spoken in my hearing, And I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

Tu però hai detto alle mie orecchie, e ho udito il suono delle tue parole, che dicevano:

9 I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me:

"Io sono puro, senza peccato, sono innocente, non c'è in me alcuna colpa.

10 B ehold, he findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for his enemy:

Ma Dio trova contro di me motivi di ostilità e mi considera suo nemico.

11 H e putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.

pone i miei piedi nei ceppi e osserva tutti i miei passi".

12 B ehold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just; For God is greater than man.

Ebbene, io ti dico che in questo non hai ragione, perché Dio è piú grande dell'uomo.

13 W hy dost thou strive against him, For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

Perché contendi con lui, dato che egli non rende conto di alcuno dei suoi atti?

14 F or God speaketh once, Yea twice, though man regardeth it not.

Dio infatti parla in un modo o nell'altro, ma l'uomo non ci bada:

15 I n a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falleth upon men, In slumberings upon the bed;

in un sogno, in una visione notturna, quando un sonno profondo cade sui mortali, quando stanno assopiti sui loro letti.

16 T hen he openeth the ears of men, And sealeth their instruction,

Allora egli apre le orecchie degli uomini e sigilla gli ammonimenti che dà loro.

17 T hat he may withdraw man from his purpose, And hide pride from man;

per distogliere l'uomo dalle sue azioni e tener l'uomo lontano dalla superbia.

18 H e keepeth back his soul from the pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.

per scampare la sua anima dalla fossa e impedire che la sua vita perisca per la spada.

19 H e is chastened also with pain upon his bed, And with continual strife in his bones;

L'uomo è pure ammonito con il dolore sul suo letto e con il tormento incessante nelle sue ossa.

20 S o that his life abhorreth bread, And his soul dainty food.

sí da aver nausea del pane e persino dei cibi più squisiti.

21 H is flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; And his bones that were not seen stick out.

La carne si consuma a vista d'occhio, mentre le sue ossa, che prima non si vedevano, spuntano fuori;

22 Y ea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, And his life to the destroyers.

cosí la sua anima si avvicina alla fossa e la sua vita a quelli che danno la morte.

23 I f there be with him an angel, An interpreter, one among a thousand, To show unto man what is right for him;

Ma se presso a lui vi è un angelo, un interprete, uno solo fra mille, che mostri all'uomo il suo dovere.

24 T hen God is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.

Dio ha pietà di lui e dice: "risparmialo dallo scendere nella fossa; ho trovato il riscatto per lui"

25 H is flesh shall be fresher than a child's; He returneth to the days of his youth.

Allora la sua carne diventerà piú fresca che nella, sua fanciullezza ed egli tornerà ai giorni della sua giovinezza.

26 H e prayeth unto God, and he is favorable unto him, So that he seeth his face with joy: And he restoreth unto man his righteousness.

Supplicherà Dio, troverà grazia presso di lui e potrà contemplare il suo volto con giubilo, perché Dio avrà ristabilito l'uomo nella sua giustizia.

27 H e singeth before men, and saith, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, And it profited me not:

Rivolgendosi alla gente dirà: "ho peccato e violato la giustizia, e non sono stato punito come meritavo.

28 H e hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit, And my life shall behold the light.

Dio ha riscattato la mia anima, perché non scendesse nella fossa e la mia vita può vedere la luce".

29 L o, all these things doth God work, Twice, yea thrice, with a man,

Ecco. Dio fa tutto questo due volte, tre volte con l'uomo.

30 T o bring back his soul from the pit, That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

per scampare la sua anima dalla fossa e per illuminarlo con la luce della vita.

31 M ark well, O Job, hearken unto me: Hold thy peace, and I will speak.

Sta' attento, Giobbe, ascoltami; sta in silenzio, e io parlerò.

32 I f thou hast anything to say, answer me: Speak, for I desire to justify thee.

Se hai qualcosa da dire, rispondimi, parla, perché vorrei poterti dar ragione.

33 I f not, hearken thou unto me: Hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.

Se no, ascoltami; taci, e io ti insegnerò la sapienza».
