1 Y et now hear, O Jacob my servant, and Israel, who I have chosen:

«Ora ascolta, o Giacobbe mio servo, o Israele, che io ho scelto!

2 T hus saith Jehovah that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, who will help thee: Fear not, O Jacob my servant; and thou, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

Cosí dice l'Eterno che ti ha fatto e ti ha formato fin dal seno materno, colui che ti aiuta: Non temere, o Giacobbe mio servo, o Jeshurun che io ho scelto!

3 F or I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and streams upon the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

Poiché io spanderò acqua sull'assetato e ruscelli sulla terra arida; spanderò il mio Spirito sulla tua progenie, e la mia benedizione sui tuoi discendenti.

4 a nd they shall spring up among the grass, as willows by the watercourses.

Essi cresceranno in mezzo all'erba come salici lungo corsi d'acqua.

5 O ne shall say, I am Jehovah's; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto Jehovah, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

L'uno dirà: "Io sono dell'Eterno"; l'altro si chiamerà col nome di Giacobbe, e un altro scriverà sulla sua mano: "Dell'Eterno", e si onorerà di portare il nome d'Israele».

6 T hus saith Jehovah, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts: I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.

Cosí dice l'Eterno, il re d'Israele e suo Redentore, l'Eterno degli eserciti: «Io sono il primo e sono l'ultimo, e all'infuori di me non c'è DIO.

7 A nd who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I established the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and that shall come to pass, let them declare.

Chi è come me? Lo proclami pure, lo dichiari e ne fornisca le prove davanti a me da quando ho stabilito questo popolo antico. Annuncino loro le cose che avverranno e gli avvenimenti che avranno luogo.

8 F ear ye not, neither be afraid: have I not declared unto thee of old, and showed it? and ye are my witnesses. Is there a God besides me? yea, there is no Rock; I know not any.

Non spaventatevi, non temete! Non te l'ho forse annunciato e dichiarato da tempo? Voi siete miei testimoni. C'è forse un Dio all'infuori di me? Non c'è altra Rocca; non ne conosco alcuna».

9 T hey that fashion a graven image are all of them vanity; and the things that they delight in shall not profit; and their own witnesses see not, nor know: that they may be put to shame.

Quelli che fabbricano immagini scolpite sono tutti vanità; le loro cose piú preziose non giovano a nulla; i loro propri testimoni non vedono né comprendono, per cui saranno coperti di vergogna.

10 W ho hath fashioned a god, or molten an image that is profitable for nothing?

Chi fabbrica un dio o fonde un'immagine scolpita senza averne alcun vantaggio?

11 B ehold, all his fellows shall be put to shame; and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; they shall fear, they shall be put to shame together.

Ecco tutti i compagni di tale persona saranno confusi; gli artigiani stessi non sono che uomini. Si radunino tutti, si presentino. Saranno spaventati e svergognati insieme.

12 T he smith maketh an axe, and worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with his strong arm: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth; he drinketh no water, and is faint.

Il fabbro con le tenaglie lavora il ferro sulle braci, gli dà la forma col martello e lo rifinisce col suo braccio vigoroso soffre la fame e la sua forza viene meno non beve acqua e si stanca.

13 T he carpenter stretcheth out a line; he marketh it out with a pencil; he shapeth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compasses, and shapeth it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house.

Il falegname stende il regolo, disegna l'idolo con la matita, lo lavora con lo scalpello, lo misura col compasso e ne fa una figura umana, una bella forma di uomo, perché rimanga in una casa.

14 H e heweth him down cedars, and taketh the holm-tree and the oak, and strengtheneth for himself one among the trees of the forest: he planteth a fir-tree, and the rain doth nourish it.

Egli taglia per sé dei cedri, prende un cipresso o una quercia che lascia crescere vigorosi fra gli alberi della foresta; egli pianta un frassino che la pioggia fa crescere.

15 T hen shall it be for a man to burn; and he taketh thereof, and warmeth himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread: yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

Questo serve all'uomo per bruciare; egli ne prende una parte per riscaldarsi e accende il fuoco per cuocere il pane; ne fa pure un dio e l'adora, ne fa un'immagine scolpita, davanti alla quale si prostra.

16 H e burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied; yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire.

Ne brucia la metà nel fuoco, con l'altra metà prepara la carne, ne cuoce l'arrosto e si sazia. Si riscalda pure e dice: «Ah, mi riscaldo, mi godo il fuoco».

17 A nd the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image; he falleth down unto it and worshippeth, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

Con il resto di esso fabbrica un dio, la sua immagine scolpita, gli si prostra davanti, lo adora, lo prega e gli dice: «Salvami, perché tu sei il mio dio».

18 T hey know not, neither do they consider: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.

Non sanno e non comprendono nulla, perché hanno impiastrato i loro occhi affinché non vedano, e i loro cuori perché non comprendano.

19 A nd none calleth to mind, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

Nessuno rientra in se stesso né ha conoscenza e intendimento per dire: «Ne ho bruciato una parte nel fuoco, sí, sulle sue braci ho fatto cuocere il pane, ho arrostito la carne e l'ho mangiata. Farò col resto un'abominazione e mi prostrerò davanti a un pezzo di legno?».

20 H e feedeth on ashes; a deceived heart hath turned him aside; and he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

Un tale si pasce di cenere, il suo cuore sedotto lo travia. Egli non può liberare la sua anima e dire: «Ciò che tengo nella mia destra non è forse una menzogna?».

21 R emember these things, O Jacob, and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.

«Ricorda queste cose, o Giacobbe, o Israele, perché tu sei mio servo; io ti ho formato, tu sei il mio servo; o Israele non sarai da me dimenticato.

22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

Ho cancellato le tue trasgressioni come una densa nube, e i tuoi peccati come una nuvola; torna a me, perché io ti ho redento».

23 S ing, O ye heavens, for Jehovah hath done it; shout, ye lower parts of the earth; break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for Jehovah hath redeemed Jacob, and will glorify himself in Israel.

Esultate o cieli, perché l'Eterno ha operato. Giubilate, o profondità della terra. Prorompete in grida di gioia, o montagne, o foreste, con tutti i vostri alberi! Poiché l'Eterno ha redento Giacobbe e ha manifestato la sua gloria in Israele.

24 T hus saith Jehovah, thy Redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb: I am Jehovah, that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth (who is with me?);

Cosí dice l'Eterno, il tuo Redentore, colui che ti ha formato fin dal seno materno: «Io sono l'Eterno che ho fatto tutte le cose, che da solo ho spiegato i cieli e ho distesa la terra; chi era con me?

25 t hat frustrateth the signs of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

Io rendo vani i presagi dei bugiardi e rendo insensati gli indovini; io faccio indietreggiare i savi e rendo folle la loro conoscenza.

26 t hat confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith of Jerusalem, She shall be inhabited; and of the cities of Judah, They shall be built, and I will raise up the waste places thereof;

Confermo la parola del mio servo e do successo al consiglio dei miei messaggeri; io dico a Gerusalemme: "Sarai abitata" e alle città di Giuda: "Sarete ricostruite" e io riedificherò le sue rovine.

27 t hat saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers;

Dico all'abisso: "Prosciugati" io prosciugherò i tuoi fiumi.

28 T hat saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure, even saying of Jerusalem, She shall be built; and of the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.

Dico di Ciro: "Egli è il mio pastore!" e compirà tutti i miei desideri, dicendo a Gerusalemme: "Sarai ricostruita!" e al tempio: "Sarai stabilito!".
