1 H ear my prayer, O Jehovah, And let my cry come unto thee.

«Preghiera dell'afflitto mentre è abbattuto ed effonde il suo lamento davanti all'Eterno.» O Eterno ascolta la mia preghiera e giunga a te il mio grido.

2 H ide not thy face from me in the day of my distress: Incline thine ear unto me; In the day when I call answer me speedily.

Non nascondermi il tuo volto nel giorno della mia avversità. Tendi verso di me il tuo orecchio; quando ti invoco affrettati a rispondermi.

3 F or my days consume away like smoke, And my bones are burned as a firebrand.

Poiché i miei giorni svaniscono come fumo e le mie ossa ardono come un tizzone.

4 M y heart is smitten like grass, and withered; For I forget to eat my bread.

Il mio cuore è percosso e inaridisce come l'erba, e dimentico persino di prendere cibo.

5 B y reason of the voice of my groaning My bones cleave to my flesh.

A forza di gemere la mia pelle si attacca alle mie ossa.

6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am become as an owl of the waste places.

Rassomiglio al pellicano del deserto e sono diventato come il gufo dei luoghi desolati.

7 I watch, and am become like a sparrow That is alone upon the house-top.

Sono insonne e sono come il passero solitario sul tetto.

8 M ine enemies reproach me all the day; They that are mad against me do curse by me.

I miei nemici mi scherniscono tutto il giorno; quelli che mi deridono imprecano contro di me.

9 F or I have eaten ashes like bread, And mingled my drink with weeping,

Poiché mangio cenere come pane e mescolo lacrime a quel che bevo,

10 B ecause of thine indignation and thy wrath: For thou hast taken me up, and cast me away.

Sí, a motivo del tuo sdegno e della tua ira, mi hai sollevato e gettato lontano,

11 M y days are like a shadow that declineth; And I am withered like grass.

I miei giorni sono come ombra che si allunga, e io inaridisco come erba.

12 B ut thou, O Jehovah, wilt abide for ever; And thy memorial name unto all generations.

Ma tu, o Eterno, rimani per sempre, e il tuo ricordo dura per ogni età.

13 T hou wilt arise, and have mercy upon Zion; For it is time to have pity upon her, Yea, the set time is come.

Tu ti leverai e avrai compassione di Sion, perché è tempo di usarle misericordia; e il tempo fissato è giunto.

14 F or thy servants take pleasure in her stones, And have pity upon her dust.

Poiché i tuoi servi hanno affezione alle sue stesse pietre e hanno pietà della sua polvere.

15 S o the nations shall fear the name of Jehovah, And all the kings of the earth thy glory.

Sí, le nazioni temeranno il nome dell'Eterno e tutti i re della terra la tua gloria,

16 F or Jehovah hath built up Zion; He hath appeared in his glory.

quando l'Eterno ricostruirà Sion e apparirà nella sua gloria.

17 H e hath regarded the prayer of the destitute, And hath not despised their prayer.

Egli ascolterà la preghiera dei derelitti e non disprezzerà la loro supplica.

18 T his shall be written for the generation to come; And a people which shall be created shall praise Jehovah.

Questo sarà scritto per la generazione futura, e il popolo che sarà creato loderà l'Eterno,

19 F or he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; From heaven did Jehovah behold the earth;

perché egli guarda dall'alto del suo santuario; dal cielo l'Eterno osserva la terra,

20 T o hear the sighing of the prisoner; To loose those that are appointed to death;

per udire il gemito dei prigionieri, per liberare i condannati a morte;

21 T hat men may declare the name of Jehovah in Zion, And his praise in Jerusalem;

affinché proclamino in Sion il nome dell'Eterno e la sua lode in Gerusalemme,

22 W hen the peoples are gathered together, And the kingdoms, to serve Jehovah.

quando i popoli e i regni si raduneranno insieme per servire l'Eterno.

23 H e weakened my strength in the way; He shortened my days.

Per via egli ha diminuito il mio vigore e ha abbreviato i miei giorni.

24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: Thy years are throughout all generations.

Ho detto: «DIO mio, non portarmi via nel mezzo dei miei giorni. I tuoi anni durano per ogni età.

25 O f old didst thou lay the foundation of the earth; And the heavens are the work of thy hands.

Anticamente tu hai stabilito la terra e i cieli sono opera delle tue mani;

26 T hey shall perish, but thou shalt endure; Yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; As a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:

essi periranno, ma tu rimarrai: si logoreranno tutti come un vestito; tu li muterai come una veste ed essi saranno cambiati,

27 B ut thou art the same, And thy years shall have no end.

Ma tu sei sempre lo stesso e gli anni tuoi non avranno mai fine.

28 T he children of thy servants shall continue, And their seed shall be established before thee.

I figli dei tuoi servi avranno una dimora, e la loro progenie sarà stabile davanti a te».
