1 T hen Job answered and said,

Allora Giobbe rispose e disse:

2 O f a truth I know that it is so: But how can man be just with God?

«Sí, io so che è cosí, ma come può un uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio?

3 I f he be pleased to contend with him, He cannot answer him one of a thousand.

Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.

4 H e is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?-

Dio è saggio di cuore e potente per la forza; chi mai si è indurito contro di lui e ha prosperato?

5 H im that removeth the mountains, and they know it not, When he overturneth them in his anger;

Egli sposta le montagne senza che se ne avvedano, quando nella sua ira le sconvolge.

6 T hat shaketh the earth out of its place, And the pillars thereof tremble;

Egli scuote la terra dal suo posto, e le sue colonne tremano.

7 T hat commandeth the sun, and it riseth not, And sealeth up the stars;

Comanda al sole, ed esso non sorge, e mette un sigillo alle stelle.

8 T hat alone stretcheth out the heavens, And treadeth upon the waves of the sea;

Da solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle alte onde del mare.

9 T hat maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the chambers of the south;

Ha fatto l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e le regioni del sud.

10 T hat doeth great things past finding out, Yea, marvellous things without number.

Egli fa cose grandi e imperscrutabili, meraviglie senza numero

11 L o, he goeth by me, and I see him not: He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

Ecco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, passa oltre e non me ne accorgo.

12 B ehold, he seizeth the prey, who can hinder him? Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

Ecco, afferra la preda, e chi gliela può riprendere? Chi può dirgli: "che cosa fai?"

13 G od will not withdraw his anger; The helpers of Rahab do stoop under him.

Dio non ritira la sua collera, sotto di lui si curvano gli aiutanti di Rahab,

14 H ow much less shall I answer him, And choose out my words to reason with him?

Come dunque potrei io rispondergli e scegliere le mie parole per discutere con lui?

15 W hom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer; I would make supplication to my judge.

Anche se avessi ragione, non potrei rispondergli, ma chiederei grazia al mio giudice.

16 I f I had called, and he had answered me, Yet would I not believe that he hearkened unto my voice.

Se io lo invocassi ed egli mi rispondesse, non potrei ancora credere che ha ascoltato la mia voce,

17 F or he breaketh me with a tempest, And multiplieth my wounds without cause.

lui, che mi colpisce con la tempesta, e moltiplica le mie ferite senza motivo.

18 H e will not suffer me to take my breath, But filleth me with bitterness.

Non mi lascia riprendere fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.

19 I f we speak of strength, lo, he is mighty! And if of justice, Who, saith he, will summon me?

Se si tratta di forza, ecco, egli è potente; se di giudizio, chi mi fisserà un giorno per comparire?

20 T hough I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me: Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse.

Anche se fossi giusto, il mio stesso parlare mi condannerebbe; anche se fossi integro, egli proverebbe che sono perverso.

21 I am perfect; I regard not myself; I despise my life.

Sono integro, ma non ho alcuna stima di me stesso e disprezzo la mia vita.

22 I t is all one; therefore I say, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

E la stessa cosa; perciò dico: Egli distrugge l'integro e il malvagio

23 I f the scourge slay suddenly, He will mock at the trial of the innocent.

Se un flagello semina improvvisamente la morte, egli ride della sofferenza degli innocenti.

24 T he earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He covereth the faces of the judges thereof: If it be not he, who then is it?

La terra è data in balìa dei malvagi; egli vela gli occhi ai giudici di essa; se non è lui, chi potrebbe dunque essere?

25 N ow my days are swifter than a post: They flee away, they see no good,

Ora i miei giorni passano piú veloci di un corridore, fuggono via senza vedere alcun bene.

26 T hey are passed away as the swift ships; As the eagle that swoopeth on the prey.

Passano rapidi come navi di giunchi, come l'aquila che piomba sulla preda.

27 I f I say, I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad countenance, and be of good cheer;

Se dico: "voglio dimenticare il mio lamento. deporre il mio aspetto triste e mostrarmi contento",

28 I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

mi spavento per tutti i miei dolori; so bene che non mi riterrai innocente.

29 I shall be condemned; Why then do I labor in vain?

Se sono già stato condannato, perché affaticarmi invano?

30 I f I wash myself with snow water, And make my hands never so clean;

Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi le mie mani con la soda,

31 Y et wilt thou plunge me in the ditch, And mine own clothes shall abhor me.

tu mi getteresti nel fango di una fossa, le mie stesse vesti mi avrebbero in orrore.

32 F or he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, That we should come together in judgment.

Egli infatti non è un uomo come me, a cui possa rispondere e che possiamo comparire in giudizio assieme.

33 T here is no umpire betwixt us, That might lay his hand upon us both.

Non c'è alcun arbitro fra noi, che ponga la mano su tutti e due.

34 L et him take his rod away from me, And let not his terror make me afraid:

Allontani da me la sua verga, e il suo terrore non mi spaventi.

35 T hen would I speak, and not fear him; For I am not so in myself.

Allora potrò parlare senza temerlo. perché non sono cosí con me stesso».
