1 A nd Job again took up his parable, and said,

Giobbe riprese il suo discorso e é disse:

2 A s God liveth, who hath taken away my right, And the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul:

«Come vive Dio che mi ha privato del mio diritto, e l'Onnipotente che mi ha amareggiato l'anima,

3 ( For my life is yet whole in me, And the spirit of God is in my nostrils);

finché ci sarà in me un soffio di vita, e il soffio di Dio nelle mie narici,

4 S urely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, Neither shall my tongue utter deceit.

le mie labbra non diranno alcuna cattiveria né la mia lingua proferirà alcuna falsità.

5 F ar be it from me that I should justify you: Till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me.

Lungi da me ammettere che voi avete ragione; fino all'ultimo respiro non rinunzierò alla mia integrità.

6 M y righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

Rimarrò saldo nella mia giustizia, senza cedere; il cuore non mi rimprovera uno solo dei miei giorni.

7 L et mine enemy be as the wicked, And let him that riseth up against me be as the unrighteous.

Il mio nemico sia come il malvagio, e chi si leva contro di me come l'ingiusto.

8 F or what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, When God taketh away his soul?

Quale speranza infatti può avere l'empio anche se riesce a fare guadagni quando Dio gli toglie la vita?

9 W ill God hear his cry, When trouble cometh upon him?

Ascolterà Dio il suo grido, quando verrà su di lui la sventura?

10 W ill he delight himself in the Almighty, And call upon God at all times?

Porrà forse il suo diletto nell'Onnipotente e invocherà Dio in ogni tempo?

11 I will teach you concerning the hand of God; That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.

Vi darò insegnamenti sulla potenza di Dio, non vi nasconderò i disegni dell'Onnipotente.

12 B ehold, all ye yourselves have seen it; Why then are ye become altogether vain?

Ma voi tutti avete osservato queste cose, perché dunque vi comportate in modo cosí vano?

13 T his is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty:

Questa è la sorte che Dio riserva al malvagio, l'eredità che i violenti ricevono dall'Onnipotente.

14 I f his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

Se ha un gran numero di figli, sono destinati alla spada, e i suoi discendenti non avranno pane per saziarsi.

15 T hose that remain of him shall be buried in death, And his widows shall make no lamentation.

I sopravvissuti dopo di lui saranno sepolti dalla morte, e le loro vedove non piangeranno.

16 T hough he heap up silver as the dust, And prepare raiment as the clay;

Se ammassa argento come polvere e accumula vestiti come fango,

17 H e may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, And the innocent shall divide the silver.

egli li accumula, ma li indosserà il giusto, e l'argento lo spartirà l'innocente.

18 H e buildeth his house as the moth, And as a booth which the keeper maketh.

Egli costruisce la sua casa come una tarma, come un capanno fatto da un guardiano.

19 H e lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered to his fathers; He openeth his eyes, and he is not.

Il ricco si corica, ma non sarà riunito ai suoi; apre gli occhi e non è piú.

20 T errors overtake him like waters; A tempest stealeth him away in the night.

Terrori lo sorprendono come acque; nel cuore della notte un uragano lo rapisce furtivamente.

21 T he east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; And it sweepeth him out of his place.

Il vento orientale lo porta via e se ne va, lo spazza via come un turbine dal suo posto.

22 F or God shall hurl at him, and not spare: He would fain flee out of his hand.

Esso gli si scaglia contro senza pietà, mentre egli cerca disperatamente di sfuggire alla sua mano,

23 M en shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place.

la gente batte beffardamente le mani nei suoi confronti e fischia dietro a lui dal suo posto».
