1 H ow is the gold become dim! how is the most pure gold changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.

Come si è annerito l'oro, si è alterato l'oro migliore! Le pietre del santuario sono sparse all'imbocco di tutte le strade.

2 T he precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

I preziosi figli di Sion valutati come oro fino, come mai sono ritenuti quali vasi di argilla, lavoro delle mani di vasaio?

3 E ven the jackals draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: The daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

Perfino gli sciacalli porgono le mammelle per allattare i loro piccoli, ma la figlia del mio popolo è divenuta crudele come gli struzzi del deserto.

4 T he tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: The young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.

La lingua del lattante si attacca al suo palato per la sete; i bambini domandano pane ma non c'è chi ne dia loro.

5 T hey that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: They that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

Quelli che mangiavano cibi squisiti languono per le strade; quelli che erano allevati nella porpora abbracciano il letamaio.

6 F or the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, That was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands were laid upon her.

La punizione dell'iniquità della figlia del mio popolo è maggiore della punizione del peccato di Sodoma, che fu distrutta in un attimo, senza che mano d'uomo le venisse contro.

7 H er nobles were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk; They were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was as of sapphire.

I suoi principi erano piú splendenti della neve, piú bianchi del latte, avevano il corpo piú rosso dei coralli, il loro volto era come uno zaffiro.

8 T heir visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: Their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.

Ora il loro aspetto è piú nero dell'oscurità; non si riconoscono piú nelle strade; la loro pelle aderisce alle loro ossa, si è seccata, è divenuta come un legno.

9 T hey that are slain with the sword are better than they that are slain with hunger; For these pine away, stricken through, for want of the fruits of the field.

Gli uccisi di spada stanno meglio di quelli che muoiono di fame, perché questi deperiscono estenuati per mancanza dei prodotti del campo.

10 T he hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children; They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Le mani delle donne pietose hanno fatto cuocere i loro stessi bambini, son serviti loro di cibo, nella rovina della figlia del mio popolo.

11 J ehovah hath accomplished his wrath, he hath poured out his fierce anger; And he hath kindled a fire in Zion, which hath devoured the foundations thereof.

L'Eterno ha esaurito il suo furore, ha riversato la sua ira ardente, ha acceso in Sion un fuoco, che ha divorato le sue fondamenta.

12 T he kings of the earth believed not, neither all the inhabitants of the world, That the adversary and the enemy would enter into the gates of Jerusalem.

I re della terra e tutti gli abitanti del mondo non avrebbero mai creduto che l'avversario e il nemico sarebbero entrati nelle porte di Gerusalemme.

13 I t is because of the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, That have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her.

Ma questo è avvenuto per i peccati dei suoi profeti e per le iniquità dei suoi sacerdoti, che hanno versato in mezzo ad essa il sangue dei giusti.

14 T hey wander as blind men in the streets, they are polluted with blood, So that men cannot touch their garments.

Essi erravano come ciechi per le strade, contaminati di sangue, di modo che nessuno poteva toccare le loro vesti.

15 D epart ye, they cried unto them, Unclean! depart, depart, touch not! When they fled away and wandered, men said among the nations, They shall no more sojourn here.

Al loro apparire la gente gridava: «Allontanatevi, un impuro! Allontanatevi, allontanatevi, non toccatelo!». Quando fuggivano e andavano errando fra le nazioni dicevano: «Non potranno piú rimanere qui».

16 T he anger of Jehovah hath scattered them; he will no more regard them: They respected not the persons of the priests, they favored not the elders.

La faccia dell'Eterno li ha dispersi, non volgerà piú su di loro il suo sguardo; non hanno avuto rispetto per i sacerdoti né hanno usato pietà per i vecchi.

17 O ur eyes do yet fail in looking for our vain help: In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

Inoltre i nostri occhi si consumavano nell'attesa di un vano soccorso. Dal nostro posto di osservazione aspettavamo invano una nazione che non poteva salvarci.

18 T hey hunt our steps, so that we cannot go in our streets: Our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.

Ci davano la caccia ad ogni passo, impedendoci di camminare per le nostre piazze. La nostra fine è prossima, i nostri giorni sono compiuti, la nostra fine è giunta.

19 O ur pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens: They chased us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

I nostri persecutori sono stati piú veloci delle aquile del cielo; Ci hanno inseguito sui monti, ci hanno teso agguati nel deserto.

20 T he breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their pits; Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.

Il soffio delle nostre narici, l'unto dell'Eterno è stato preso nelle loro fosse, lui, del quale dicevamo: «Alla sua ombra noi vivremo fra le nazioni».

21 R ejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz: The cup shall pass through unto thee also; thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.

Rallegrati e gioisci, o figlia di Edom, che dimori nel paese di Uts. Anche a te giungerà il calice; ti ubriacherai e scoprirai la tua nudità.

22 T he punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity: He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will uncover thy sins.

La punizione della tua iniquità si è compiuta, o figlia di Sion. Egli non ti manderà piú in cattività, ma punirà la tua iniquità, o figlia di Edom, metterà allo scoperto i tuoi peccati.
