1 N ow after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

Dopo queste cose, sotto il regno di Artaserse, re di Persia, Esdra, figlio di Seraiah, figlio di Azaria, figlio di Hilkiah,

2 t he son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub,

figlio di Shallum, figlio di Tsadok, figlio di Ahitub,

3 t he son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth,

figlio di Amariah, figlio di Azaria, figlio di Meraioth,

4 t he son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki,

5 t he son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest;

figlio di Abishua, figlio di Finehas, figlio di Eleazar, figlio di Aaronne, il sommo sacerdote;

6 t his Ezra went up from Babylon: and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which Jehovah, the God of Israel, had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of Jehovah his God upon him.

questo Esdra veniva da Babilonia. Egli era uno scriba, esperto nella legge di Mosè data dall'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele. Il re gli concesse tutto ciò che egli domandò, perché la mano dell'Eterno, il suo DIO, era su di lui.

7 A nd there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinim, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

Nel settimo anno del re Artaserse, salirono pure a Gerusalemme alcuni dei figli d'Israele e dei sacerdoti, Leviti, cantori, portinai e Nethinei.

8 A nd he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.

Esdra giunse a Gerusalemme nel quinto mese, che era l'anno settimo del re.

9 F or upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon; and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.

Egli iniziò il suo viaggio da Babilonia il primo giorno del primo mese e arrivò a Gerusalemme il primo giorno del quinto mese, poiché la benefica mano del suo DIO era su di lui.

10 F or Ezra had set his heart to seek the law of Jehovah, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and ordinances.

Infatti Esdra si era dedicato con il suo cuore a ricercare la legge dell'Eterno, a metterla in pratica e a insegnare in Israele statuti e decreti.

11 N ow this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even the scribe of the words of the commandments of Jehovah, and of his statutes to Israel:

Ecco la copia della lettera che il re Artaserse consegnò al sacerdote Esdra, lo scriba, uno scriba esperto nei comandamenti dell'Eterno e nei suoi statuti dati a Israele:

12 A rtaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect and so forth.

«Artaserse, re dei re, al sacerdote Esdra, uno scriba esperto nella legge del DIO del cielo. Salute, eccetera.

13 I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and their priests and the Levites, in my realm, that are minded of their own free will to go to Jerusalem, go with thee.

Io ho emanato un decreto che chiunque del popolo d'Israele e dei suoi sacerdoti e Leviti nel mio regno ha liberamente deciso di andare a Gerusalemme, può venire con te.

14 F orasmuch as thou art sent of the king and his seven counsellors, to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thy hand,

Infatti tu sei mandato da parte del re e dai suoi sette consiglieri per fare indagini in Giuda e a Gerusalemme intorno alla legge del tuo Dio, che è nelle tue mani,

15 a nd to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem,

e per portare l'argento e l'oro che il re e i suoi consiglieri hanno spontaneamente offerto al Dio d'Israele, la cui dimora è a Gerusalemme,

16 a nd all the silver and gold that thou shalt find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill-offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;

e tutto l'argento e l'oro che potrai trovare in tutta la provincia di Babilonia, insieme all'offerta volontaria, fatta spontaneamente dal popolo e dai sacerdoti per la casa del loro Dio a Gerusalemme.

17 t herefore thou shalt with all diligence buy with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meal-offerings and their drink-offerings, and shalt offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.

Perciò con questo denaro tu avrai cura di comprare torelli, montoni e agnelli con le loro offerte di cibo e libazioni, e li offrirai sull'altare della casa del vostro Dio che è a Gerusalemme.

18 A nd whatsoever shall seem good to thee and to thy brethren to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do ye after the will of your God.

Quanto al resto dell'argento e dell'oro, farete ciò che sembrerà bene a te e ai tuoi fratelli, secondo la volontà del vostro Dio.

19 A nd the vessels that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.

Anche gli utensili che ti sono dati per il servizio della casa del tuo Dio, rimettili davanti al Dio di Gerusalemme.

20 A nd whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king's treasure-house.

Per qualsiasi altro bisogno della casa del tuo Dio che spetta a te di provvedere, lo provvederai a spese del tesoro reale.

21 A nd I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers that are beyond the River, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done with all diligence,

Io, il re Artaserse, do ordine a tutti i tesorieri della regione oltre il Fiume: tutto ciò che chiederà il sacerdote Esdra lo scriba della legge del Dio del cielo, sia eseguito prontamente

22 u nto a hundred talents of silver, and to a hundred measures of wheat, and to a hundred baths of wine, and to a hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much.

fino a cento talenti d'argento, cento cori di grano, cento bati di vino, cento bati di olio e sale in quantità illimitata.

23 W hatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done exactly for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?

Tutto quello che è comandato dal Dio del cielo venga eseguito diligentemente per la casa del Dio del cielo. Perché l'ira dovrebbe venire sul regno del re e dei suoi figli?

24 A lso we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, the singers, porters, Nethinim, or servants of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll, upon them.

Inoltre vi rendiamo noto che non è lecito riscuotere tributo, imposta o pedaggio da alcuno dei sacerdoti, Leviti, cantori, portinai, Nethinei e servi di questa casa di Dio.

25 A nd thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God that is in thy hand, appoint magistrates and judges, who may judge all the people that are beyond the River, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye him that knoweth them not.

E tu, o Esdra, secondo la sapienza del tuo Dio, che tu possiedi, stabilisci magistrati e giudici che amministrino la giustizia a tutto il popolo che si trova nella regione oltre il Fiume, a tutti quelli che conoscono le leggi del tuo Dio; e a quelli che non le conoscono insegnatele.

26 A nd whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed upon him with all diligence, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.

Di chiunque poi non osserva la legge del tuo Dio e la legge del re sia fatta prontamente giustizia, o con la morte o con il bando o con la confisca dei beni o con la prigione».

27 B lessed be Jehovah, the God of our fathers, who hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of Jehovah which is in Jerusalem;

Benedetto sia l'Eterno, il DIO dei nostri padri, che ha messo una cosa come questa nel cuore del re, di abbellire la casa dell'Eterno che è a Gerusalemme,

28 a nd hath extended lovingkindness unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened according to the hand of Jehovah my God upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.

e mi ha fatto trovare favore presso il re, i suoi consiglieri e tutti i potenti principi reali. Cosí mi sentii incoraggiato, perché la mano dell'Eterno, il mio DIO, era su di me, e radunai i capi d'Israele perché partissero con me.
