1 B less Jehovah, O my soul. O Jehovah my God, thou art very great; Thou art clothed with honor and majesty:

Benedici, anima mia, l'Eterno! O Eterno, mio DIO, tu sei sommamente grande; sei vestito di splendore e di maestà.

2 W ho coverest thyself with light as with a garment; Who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain;

Egli ti avvolge di luce come di un manto e distende i cieli come una tenda;

3 W ho layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters; Who maketh the clouds his chariot; Who walketh upon the wings of the wind;

egli costruisce sulle acque le sue alte stanze, fa delle nubi il suo carro e cammina sulle ali del vento.

4 W ho maketh winds his messengers; Flames of fire his ministers;

Fa dei venti i suoi messaggeri e una fiamma di fuoco i suoi ministri.

5 W ho laid the foundations of the earth, That it should not be moved for ever.

Egli ha fondato la terra sulle sue basi; essa non sarà mai smossa in eterno,

6 T hou coveredst it with the deep as with a vesture; The waters stood above the mountains.

Tu l'avevi coperta dell'abisso come di una veste; le acque si erano fermate sui monti.

7 A t thy rebuke they fled; At the voice of thy thunder they hasted away

Al tuo rimprovero esse fuggirono, alla voce del tuo tuono si allontanarono in fretta.

8 ( The mountains rose, the valleys sank down) Unto the place which thou hadst founded for them.

I monti sorsero e le valli si abbassarono nel luogo che tu avevi fissato per loro.

9 T hou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; That they turn not again to cover the earth.

Tu hai posto alle acque un limite da non oltrepassare; esse non torneranno a coprire la terra.

10 H e sendeth forth springs into the valleys; They run among the mountains;

Egli fa scaturire sorgenti nelle valli; esse scorrono fra le montagne

11 T hey give drink to every beast of the field; The wild asses quench their thirst.

e danno da bere a tutte le bestie della campagna; gli onagri vi estinguono la loro sete.

12 B y them the birds of the heavens have their habitation; They sing among the branches.

Accanto ad esse fanno dimora gli uccelli del cielo; fra le fronde elevano il loro canto.

13 H e watereth the mountains from his chambers: The earth is filled with the fruit of thy works.

Dalle sue stanze superiori egli dà acqua ai monti; la terra è saziata col frutto delle tue opere.

14 H e causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, And herb for the service of man; That he may bring forth food out of the earth,

Egli fa crescere l'erba per il bestiame e la vegetazione per il servizio dell'uomo, facendo uscire dalla terra il suo nutrimento,

15 A nd wine that maketh glad the heart of man, And oil to make his face to shine, And bread that strengtheneth man's heart.

e il vino che rallegra il cuore dell'uomo, l'olio che fa brillare il suo volto e il pane che dà forza al cuore dell'uomo.

16 T he trees of Jehovah are filled with moisture, The cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;

Vengono cosí saziati gli alberi dell'Eterno e i cedri del Libano che egli ha piantato;

17 W here the birds make their nests: As for the stork, the fir-trees are her house.

là fanno il loro nido gli uccelli, mentre la cicogna fa dei cipressi la sua dimora.

18 T he high mountains are for the wild goats; The rocks are a refuge for the conies.

Gli alti monti sono per i camosci; le rocce sono rifugio dei conigli.

19 H e appointed the moon for seasons: The sun knoweth his going down.

Egli ha fatto la luna per le stagioni; il sole conosce l'ora del suo tramonto.

20 T hou makest darkness, and it is night, Wherein all the beasts of the forest creep forth.

Tu mandi le tenebre e si fa notte; in essa vanno attorno tutte le bestie della foresta.

21 T he young lions roar after their prey, And seek their food from God.

I leoncelli ruggiscono in cerca di preda e chiedono a DIO il loro pasto.

22 T he sun ariseth, they get them away, And lay them down in their dens.

Ma, quando sorge il sole, essi si ritirano e rimangono nelle loro tane.

23 M an goeth forth unto his work And to his labor until the evening.

Allora l'uomo esce alla sua opera e al suo lavoro fino alla sera.

24 O Jehovah, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all: The earth is full of thy riches.

Quanto numerose sono le tue opere, o Eterno! Tu le hai fatte tutte con sapienza; la terra è piena delle tue ricchezze.

25 Y onder is the sea, great and wide, Wherein are things creeping innumerable, Both small and great beasts.

Ecco il mare, grande e spazioso, che brulica di innumerevoli creature;

26 T here go the ships; There is leviathan, whom thou hast formed to play therein.

percorrono le navi e il Leviathan che tu hai formato per scherzare in esso.

27 T hese wait all for thee, That thou mayest give them their food in due season.

Tutti si aspettano da te che tu dia loro il cibo a suo tempo,

28 T hou givest unto them, they gather; Thou openest thy hand, they are satisfied with good.

Tu lo provvedi loro ed essi lo raccolgono; tu apri la mano e sono saziati di beni.

29 T hou hidest thy face, they are troubled; Thou takest away their breath, they die, And return to their dust.

Tu nascondi la tua faccia, ed essi sono smarriti; tu ritiri il loro spirito, ed essi muoiono ritornando nella loro polvere.

30 T hou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created; And thou renewest the face of the ground.

Tu mandi il tuo spirito, ed essi sono creati, e tu rinnovi la faccia della terra.

31 L et the glory of Jehovah endure for ever; Let Jehovah rejoice in his works:

La gloria dell'Eterno duri per sempre; si allieti l'Eterno nelle sue opere;

32 W ho looketh on the earth, and it trembleth; He toucheth the mountains, and they smoke.

egli guarda alla terra ed essa trema; egli tocca i monti ed essi fumano.

33 I will sing unto Jehovah as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have any being.

Io canterò all'Eterno finché avrò vita; canterò le lodi al mio DIO finché esisterò.

34 L et thy meditation be sweet unto him: I will rejoice in Jehovah.

Possa la mia meditazione essergli gradita; io mi rallegrerò nell'Eterno.

35 L et sinners be consumed out of the earth. And let the wicked be no more. Bless Jehovah, O my soul. Praise ye Jehovah.

Scompaiano i peccatori dalla terra e gli empi non siano piú. Anima mia, benedici l'Eterno! Alleluia.
