1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?

«Io avevo stretto un patto con i miei occhi; come potevo quindi fissare lo sguardo su una vergine?

2 F or what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

Qual è la sorte assegnatami da Dio da lassú, e l'eredità dell'Onnipotente dai luoghi eccelsi?

3 I s it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

Non è forse la sventura per il perverso e la calamità per ehi fa il male

4 D oth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?

Non vede egli le mie vie e non conta tutti i miei passi?

5 I f I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Se ho agito con falsità, o il mio piede si è affrettato a seguire la frode,

6 ( Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity);

mi pesi pure con una giusta bilancia, e Dio riconoscerà la mia integrità.

7 I f my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

Se i miei passi sono usciti dalla retta via, e il mio cuore ha seguito i miei occhi, o qualche macchia si è attaccata alle mie mani,

8 T hen let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

che io semini e un altro mangi, e i miei discendenti siano sradicati.

9 I f my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor's door;

Se il mio cuore è stato sedotto da una donna e ho spiato alla porta del mio prossimo,

10 T hen let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.

che mia moglie macini per un altro, e che altri si pieghino sopra di lei.

11 F or that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

Poiché quella sarebbe una scelleratezza, una colpa che deve essere punita dai giudici,

12 F or it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.

un fuoco che consuma fino ad Abaddon, e avrebbe distrutto fin dalle radici tutto il mio raccolto.

13 I f I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;

Se ho respinto il diritto del mio servo e della mia serva, quando erano in lite con me,

14 W hat then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

che cosa farei quando Dio si levasse contro di me, e che cosa risponderei quando mi chiedesse conto?

15 D id not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

Chi ha fatto me nel grembo materno, non ha fatto anche lui? Non fu lo stesso Dio a formarci nel grembo?

16 I f I have withheld the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

Se ho rifiutato ai poveri ciò che desideravano e ho fatto languire gli occhi della vedova

17 O r have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

se ho mangiato da solo il mio tozzo di pane senza che ne mangiasse una parte l'orfano,

18 ( Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother's womb);

(ma fin dalla mia giovinezza io l'ho allevato come un padre, e fin dal grembo di mia madre sono stato guida alla vedova),

19 I f I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;

se ho visto alcuno perire per mancanza di vesti o un povero che non aveva di che coprirsi,

20 I f his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

se i suoi lombi non mi hanno benedetto, e non si è riscaldato con la lana dei miei agnelli,

21 I f I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

se ho alzato la mano contro l'orfano perché sapevo di avere aiuto alla porta,

22 T hen let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.

che la mia spalla si stacchi dalla sua scapola, il mio braccio si rompa al gomito!

23 F or calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

Poiché la calamità che viene da Dio mi incute spavento, e a motivo della sua maestà non potevo fare nulla.

24 I f I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Se ho riposto la mia fiducia nell'oro, e all'oro fino ho detto: "Tu sei la mia speranza",

25 I f I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

se mi sono rallegrato perché le mie ricchezze erano grandi, e perché la mia mano ha accumulato tanti beni,

26 I f I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,

se ho guardato il sole quando brilla o la luna che avanzava splendente, e il mio cuore si è lasciato segretamente sedurre e la mia bocca ha baciato la mia mano;

27 A nd my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

anche questa sarebbe una colpa che deve essere punita dai giudici perché avrei rinnegato Dio che sta in alto.

28 T his also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.

Se mi sono rallegrato della sciagura del mio nemico e mi sono innalzato, perché lo aveva colpito la sventura.

29 I f I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him;

(ma io non ho permesso alla mia bocca di peccare, augurandogli la morte con una maledizione);

30 ( Yea, I have not suffered by mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);

se la gente della mia tenda non ha detto: "chi può trovare uno che non si è saziato con la sua carne?

31 I f the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

(inoltre nessun forestiero passava la notte all'aperto, perchè aprivo le mie porte al viandante)

32 ( The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

se ho coperto i miei peccati come Adamo celando la mia colpa in petto,

33 I f like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

perché avevo paura della grande folla e il disprezzo delle famiglie mi spaventava, sí da star zitto senza uscir di casa.

34 B ecause I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door-

Oh, avessi uno che mi ascoltasse! Ecco la mia firma! L'Onnipotente mi risponda! Il mio avversario scriva un documento,

35 O h that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); And that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

e io lo porterei certamente sulle mie spalle e lo cingerei come un diadema;

36 S urely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:

gli renderei conto di tutti i miei passi, presentandomi a lui come un principe.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.

Se la mia terra grida contro di me e i suoi solchi piangono insieme ad essa,

38 I f my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;

se ho mangiato il suo frutto senza pagare, se ho fatto esalare l'ultimo respiro ai suoi padroni,

39 I f I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

invece di grano crescano spine, ed erbacce al posto dell'orzo».

40 L et thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
