1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?

»Hice pacto con mis ojos, ¿cómo, pues, había yo de mirar a una virgen?

2 F or what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

Porque ¿qué galardón Dios me daría desde arriba? ¿Qué heredad el Omnipotente desde las alturas?

3 I s it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

¿Es que no hay desgracia para el malvado, infortunio para los que hacen iniquidad?

4 D oth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?

¿Acaso él no ve mis caminos y cuenta todos mis pasos?

5 I f I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit;

»¿Es que yo anduve con mentiras, o corrieron mis pies al engaño?

6 ( Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity);

¡Que Dios me pese en la balanza de la justicia y reconocerá mi integridad!

7 I f my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, si mi corazón se fue tras mis ojos, si algo se pegó a mis manos,

8 T hen let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

¡siembre yo y otro coma! ¡Sea arrancada mi siembra!

9 I f my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor's door;

»Si fue engañado mi corazón por alguna mujer, si estuve acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo,

10 T hen let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.

¡muela para otro mi mujer y sobre ella otros se encorven!

11 F or that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

Porque eso es maldad e iniquidad que han de castigar los jueces.

12 F or it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.

Porque eso es un fuego que devoraría hasta el Abadón y consumiría toda mi hacienda.

13 I f I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;

»Si hubiera yo menospreciado el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva cuando ellos pleiteaban conmigo,

14 W hat then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

¿qué haría cuando Dios se levantara? Y cuando él me preguntara, ¿qué le respondería?

15 D id not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

El que en el vientre me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo a él? ¿Y no fue uno y el mismo quien nos formó en la matriz?

16 I f I have withheld the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

»Si he impedido a los pobres quedar satisfechos, si he hecho decaer los ojos de la viuda,

17 O r have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

si he comido yo solo mi bocado y no comió de él el huérfano

18 ( Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother's womb);

(porque desde mi juventud creció conmigo como con un padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fui guía de la viuda);

19 I f I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;

si he visto a alguno perecer por falta de vestido, por carecer de abrigo el necesitado;

20 I f his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

si no me bendijeron sus espaldas al calentarse con el vellón de mis ovejas;

21 I f I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aun viendo que en la puerta estaban de mi parte,

22 T hen let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.

¡que mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro y se quiebre el hueso de mi brazo!

23 F or calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

Porque he temido el castigo de Dios, contra cuya majestad yo no tendría poder.

24 I f I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

»Si puse en el oro mi esperanza, y le dije al oro: “Mi confianza está en ti”;

25 I f I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

si me alegré de que mis riquezas se multiplicaran y de tener mucho en mi mano;

26 I f I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,

si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía o a la luna en su esplendor,

27 A nd my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

y mi corazón fue engañado en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano,

28 T his also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.

eso también sería una maldad digna de juicio, porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

29 I f I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him;

»Si me alegré con el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía y me regocijé cuando le sobrevino el mal

30 ( Yea, I have not suffered by mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);

(aun cuando mi lengua no entregué al pecado para pedir la maldición para su alma);

31 I f the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

si mis siervos no decían: “¿Quién hay que no se haya saciado con su carne?”

32 ( The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

(porque ningún forastero pasaba fuera la noche, sino que yo abría mis puertas al caminante);

33 I f like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

si como humano que soy encubrí mis transgresiones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad,

34 B ecause I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door-

porque temía a la multitud, que era grande, y me atemorizaba el menosprecio de las familias, y entonces callaba y no salía de mi puerta...

35 O h that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); And that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

¡Quién me diera ser escuchado! Pero mi confianza es que el Omnipotente será mi testigo, aunque mi adversario me lleve a juicio.

36 S urely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:

Ciertamente yo lo cargaría sobre mi hombro, me lo ceñiría como una corona.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.

Yo le daría cuenta de todos mis pasos; como un príncipe me presentaría delante de él.

38 I f my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;

»Si mi tierra clama contra mí y lloran todos sus surcos;

39 I f I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

si he comido su sustancia sin pagar o he afligido el alma de sus dueños,

40 L et thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

¡que en lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinos en lugar de cebada!» Aquí terminan las palabras de Job.
