1 A nd the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.

Partieron los hijos de Israel y acamparon en los campos de Moab, junto al Jordán, frente a Jericó.

2 A nd Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

Vio Balac hijo de Zipor todo lo que Israel había hecho al amorreo,

3 A nd Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

y sintió Moab un gran temor por aquel pueblo, pues era muy numeroso. Se angustió Moab a causa de los hijos de Israel,

4 A nd Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

y dijo a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora esta gente va a devorar todos nuestros contornos, como devora el buey la grama del campo.» Balac hijo de Zipor, que entonces era rey de Moab,

5 A nd he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.

envió mensajeros a Balaam hijo de Beor, en Petor, que está junto al río en la tierra de los hijos de su pueblo, para que lo llamaran, diciendo: «Un pueblo que ha salido de Egipto cubre toda la tierra y se ha establecido frente a mí.

6 C ome now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

Ven pues, ahora, te ruego, y maldíceme a este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo; quizá yo pueda herirlo y echarlo de la tierra, pues yo sé que el que tú bendigas bendito quedará, y el que tú maldigas maldito quedará.»

7 A nd the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

Partieron los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián con las dádivas de adivinación en sus manos. Llegaron a Balaam y le comunicaron las palabras de Balac.

8 A nd he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Jehovah shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

Balaam les respondió: —Reposad aquí esta noche, y yo os responderé según Jehová me hable. Así los príncipes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam.

9 A nd God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

Entonces se le apareció Dios a Balaam y le preguntó: —¿Quiénes son estos que están contigo?

10 A nd Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,

Balaam respondió a Dios: —Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab, ha enviado a decirme:

11 B ehold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth: now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.

“Este pueblo que ha salido de Egipto cubre toda la tierra. Ven pues, ahora, y maldícemelo; quizá podré pelear contra él y echarlo.”

12 A nd God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.

Entonces dijo Dios a Balaam: —No vayas con ellos ni maldigas al pueblo, porque bendito es.

13 A nd Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land; for Jehovah refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

Balaam se levantó por la mañana y dijo a los príncipes de Balac: —Volveos a vuestra tierra, porque Jehová no me quiere dejar ir con vosotros.

14 A nd the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

Los príncipes de Moab se levantaron, regresaron a donde estaba Balac y le dijeron: —Balaam no quiso venir con nosotros.

15 A nd Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.

Otra vez volvió Balac a enviar príncipes, en mayor número y más honorables que los otros,

16 A nd they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

los cuales fueron a ver a Balaam y le dijeron: —Así dice Balac hijo de Zipor: “Te ruego que no dejes de venir a mí,

17 f or I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

pues sin duda te honraré mucho y haré todo lo que me digas. Ven, pues, ahora, y maldíceme a este pueblo.”

18 A nd Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah my God, to do less or more.

Balaam respondió a los siervos de Balac: —Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de plata y oro, no puedo traspasar la palabra de Jehová, mi Dios, para hacer cosa chica ni grande.

19 N ow therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what Jehovah will speak unto me more.

Os ruego, por tanto, ahora, que reposéis aquí esta noche, para que yo sepa qué me vuelve a decir Jehová.

20 A nd God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.

Y se le apareció Dios a Balaam de noche, y le dijo: «Si vinieron para llamarte estos hombres, levántate y vete con ellos; pero harás lo que yo te diga.» El ángel y el asna de Balaam

21 A nd Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

Balaam se levantó por la mañana, ensilló su asna y se fue con los príncipes de Moab.

22 A nd God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Jehovah placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

Pero la ira de Dios se encendió porque él iba, y el ángel de Jehová se puso en el camino como un adversario suyo. Iba, pues, él montado sobre su asna, y con él dos criados suyos.

23 A nd the ass saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

Cuando el asna vio al ángel de Jehová, que estaba en el camino con la espada desnuda en la mano, se apartó del camino y se fue por el campo. Entonces azotó Balaam al asna para hacerla volver al camino.

24 T hen the angel of Jehovah stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

Pero el ángel de Jehová se puso en una senda de viñas que tenía pared a un lado y pared al otro.

25 A nd the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

Al ver el asna al ángel de Jehová, se pegó a la pared, y apretó contra la pared el pie de Balaam. Él volvió a azotarla.

26 A nd the angel of Jehovah went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

El ángel de Jehová pasó más allá, y se puso en un sendero angosto donde no había camino para apartarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.

27 A nd the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she lay down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff.

Cuando el asna vio al ángel de Jehová, se echó al suelo debajo de Balaam. Balaam se enojó y azotó al asna con un palo.

28 A nd Jehovah opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

Entonces Jehová abrió la boca al asna, la cual dijo a Balaam: —¿Qué te he hecho, que me has azotado estas tres veces?

29 A nd Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me, I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.

—Porque te has burlado de mí —respondió Balaam al asna—. ¡Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, ahora mismo te mataría!

30 A nd the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, Nay.

El asna dijo a Balaam: —¿No soy yo tu asna? Sobre mí has cabalgado desde que tú me tienes hasta este día ¿Acaso acostumbro a portarme así contigo? —No —respondió él.

31 T hen Jehovah opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.

Entonces Jehová abrió los ojos de Balaam, que vio al ángel de Jehová en medio del camino, con la espada desnuda en la mano. Balaam hizo una reverencia y se postró sobre su rostro.

32 A nd the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is perverse before me:

El ángel de Jehová le dijo: —¿Por qué has azotado a tu asna estas tres veces? Yo soy el que ha salido a resistirte, porque tu camino es perverso delante de mí.

33 a nd the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times: unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive.

El asna me ha visto y se ha apartado de mí estas tres veces. Y si de mí no se hubiera apartado, ya te hubiera matado a ti, y a ella la habría dejado viva.

34 A nd Balaam said unto the angel of Jehovah, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

Entonces Balaam dijo al ángel de Jehová: —He pecado, porque no sabía que tú te ponías delante de mí en el camino; pero ahora, si te parece mal, yo regresaré.

35 A nd the angel of Jehovah said unto Balaam, Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

Pero el ángel de Jehová respondió a Balaam: —Ve con esos hombres; pero la palabra que yo te diga, ésa hablarás. Así Balaam se fue con los príncipes de Balac.

36 A nd when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.

Cuando Balac oyó que Balaam venía, salió a recibirlo a la ciudad de Moab, que está junto al límite de Arnón, en los confines de su territorio.

37 A nd Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honor?

Y Balac dijo a Balaam: —¿No envié yo a llamarte? ¿Por qué no has venido ante mí? ¿No puedo yo honrarte?

38 A nd Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to speak anything? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

Balaam respondió a Balac: —Mira, ya he venido ante ti; pero ¿podré ahora decir alguna cosa? La palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca, ésa hablaré.

39 A nd Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiriath-huzoth.

Luego fue Balaam con Balac, y llegaron a Quiriat-huzot.

40 A nd Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

Balac hizo matar bueyes y ovejas, y lo envió a Balaam y a los príncipes que estaban con él. Balaam bendice a Israel

41 A nd it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal; and he saw from thence the utmost part of the people.

Al día siguiente, Balac tomó a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot-baal, y desde allí vio una parte del pueblo.
