1 A nd it came to pass, when all the kings that were beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

Cuando oyeron estas cosas todos los reyes que estaban a este lado del Jordán, tanto en las montañas como en los llanos, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande hasta el Líbano: heteos, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos,

2 t hat they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

se concertaron para pelear contra Josué e Israel.

3 B ut when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

Pero cuando los habitantes de Gabaón oyeron lo que Josué había hecho con Jericó y Hai,

4 t hey also did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-skins, old and rent and bound up,

recurrieron a la astucia, pues fueron y se fingieron embajadores, tomaron sacos viejos sobre sus asnos y odres viejos de vino, rotos y remendados;

5 a nd old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become mouldy.

se pusieron zapatos viejos y recosidos, y vestidos viejos. Todo el pan que traían para el camino era seco y mohoso.

6 A nd they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far country: now therefore make ye a covenant with us.

Al llegar a Josué al campamento en Gilgal, les dijeron a él y a los de Israel: —Nosotros venimos de una tierra muy lejana; haced, pues, ahora una alianza con nosotros.

7 A nd the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?

Los de Israel respondieron a los heveos: —Si habitáis en medio de nosotros, ¿cómo, pues, podremos hacer alianza con vosotros?

8 A nd they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

Ellos respondieron a Josué: —Nosotros somos tus siervos. —¿Quiénes sois vosotros, y de dónde venís? —les dijo Josué.

9 A nd they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of Jehovah thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

Ellos respondieron: —Tus siervos han venido de tierra muy lejana a causa del nombre de Jehová, tu Dios, pues hemos oído de su fama, de todo lo que hizo en Egipto

10 a nd all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

y todo lo que hizo con los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: Sehón, rey de Hesbón, y Og, rey de Basán, que estaba en Astarot.

11 A nd our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: and now make ye a covenant with us.

Por eso nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestra tierra nos dijeron: “Tomad en vuestras manos la provisión para el camino, id al encuentro de ellos y decidles: ‘Nosotros somos vuestros siervos; haced ahora alianza con nosotros.’”

12 T his our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy:

Este nuestro pan lo tomamos caliente de nuestras casas para el camino el día que salimos para venir a vuestro encuentro, y ahora ya está seco y mohoso.

13 a nd these wine-skins, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

Estos odres de vino también los llenamos nuevos, y ya están rotos. También estos nuestros vestidos y nuestros zapatos están ya viejos a causa de tanto caminar.

14 A nd the men took of their provision, and asked not counsel at the mouth of Jehovah.

Los hombres de Israel tomaron de las provisiones de ellos, pero no consultaron a Jehová.

15 A nd Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

Josué hizo la paz con ellos; también celebró con ellos una alianza concediéndoles la vida y los príncipes de la congregación hicieron un juramento.

16 A nd it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them.

Tres días después que hicieron la alianza con ellos, supieron que eran sus vecinos y que habitaban en medio de ellos.

17 A nd the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.

Los hijos de Israel salieron, y al tercer día llegaron a sus ciudades, que eran Gabaón, Cafira, Beerot y Quiriat-jearim.

18 A nd the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

No los mataron los hijos de Israel por cuanto los príncipes de la congregación les habían jurado por Jehová, el Dios de Israel. Toda la congregación empezó a murmurar contra los príncipes;

19 B ut all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

pero todos los príncipes respondieron a la congregación: —Nosotros les hemos jurado por Jehová, Dios de Israel; por tanto, ahora no los podemos tocar.

20 T his we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

Esto haremos con ellos: los dejaremos vivir, para que no venga sobre nosotros la ira por causa del juramento que les hemos hecho.

21 A nd the princes said unto them, Let them live: so they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.

De ellos dijeron, pues, los príncipes: «¡Dejadlos vivir!, pero que se constituyan en leñadores y aguadores para toda la congregación», concediéndoles así la vida, según les habían prometido los príncipes.

22 A nd Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

Josué los llamó y les dijo: —¿Por qué nos habéis engañado diciendo: “Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros”, siendo que vivís en medio de nosotros?

23 N ow therefore ye are cursed, and there shall never fail to be of you bondmen, both hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

Ahora, pues, malditos sois, y nunca dejará de haber de entre vosotros siervos, ni quienes corten la leña y saquen el agua para la casa de mi Dios.

24 A nd they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

Ellos respondieron a Josué: —Como fue dado a entender a tus siervos que Jehová, tu Dios, había mandado a Moisés, su siervo, que os había de dar toda la tierra, y que había de destruir a todos los habitantes de la tierra delante de vosotros, por esto temimos mucho por nuestras vidas a causa de vosotros, e hicimos esto.

25 A nd now, behold, we are in thy hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

Ahora, pues, estamos en tus manos; lo que te parezca bueno y recto hacer de nosotros, hazlo.

26 A nd so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

Él hizo así con ellos, pues los libró de manos de los hijos de Israel y no los mataron.

27 A nd Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

Aquel día Josué los destinó a ser leñadores y aguadores para la congregación y para el altar de Jehová, en el lugar que Jehová eligiera. Eso son hasta hoy.
