1 F or all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; whether it be love or hatred, man knoweth it not; all is before them.

Ciertamente me he dado de corazón a todas estas cosas, para poder declarar que los justos y los sabios, y sus obras, están en la mano de Dios. Y que los hombres ni siquiera saben qué es amor o qué es odio, aunque todo está delante de ellos.

2 A ll things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

Todo acontece a todos de la misma manera; lo mismo les ocurre al justo y al malvado, al bueno, al puro y al impuro, al que sacrifica y al que no sacrifica; lo mismo al bueno que al pecador, tanto al que jura como al que teme jurar.

3 T his is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

Este mal hay entre todo lo que se hace debajo del sol: que un mismo suceso acontece a todos, y que el corazón de los hijos de los hombres está lleno de mal y de insensatez durante toda su vida. Y que después de esto se van con los muertos.

4 F or to him that is joined with all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

Aún hay esperanza para todo aquel que está entre los vivos, pues mejor es perro vivo que león muerto.

5 F or the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Porque los que viven saben que han de morir, pero los muertos nada saben, ni tienen más recompensa. Su memoria cae en el olvido.

6 A s well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion for ever in anything that is done under the sun.

También perecen su amor, su odio y su envidia; y ya nunca más tendrán parte en todo lo que se hace debajo del sol.

7 G o thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works.

Anda, come tu pan con gozo y bebe tu vino con alegre corazón, porque tus obras ya son agradables a Dios.

8 L et thy garments be always white; and let not thy head lack oil.

Que en todo tiempo sean blancos tus vestidos y nunca falte perfume sobre tu cabeza.

9 L ive joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of thy life of vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all thy days of vanity: for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labor wherein thou laborest under the sun.

Goza de la vida con la mujer que amas, todos los días de la vida vana que te son dados debajo del sol, todos los días de tu vanidad. Ésta es tu recompensa en la vida, y en el trabajo con que te afanas debajo del sol.

10 W hatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.

Todo lo que te venga a mano para hacer, hazlo según tus fuerzas, porque en el seol, adonde vas, no hay obra, ni trabajo ni ciencia ni sabiduría.

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Me volví, y vi debajo del sol que ni es de los veloces la carrera, ni de los fuertes la guerra, ni aun de los sabios el pan, ni de los prudentes las riquezas, ni de los elocuentes el favor; pues a todos les llega el tiempo y la ocasión.

12 F or man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Ahora bien, el hombre tampoco conoce su tiempo: Como los peces apresados en la mala red, o como las aves que se enredan en el lazo, así se ven atrapados los hijos de los hombres por el tiempo malo, cuando de repente cae sobre ellos.

13 I have also seen wisdom under the sun on this wise, and it seemed great unto me:

También vi debajo del sol esto que me parece de gran sabiduría:

14 T here was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it.

Había una pequeña ciudad, con pocos habitantes, y vino un gran rey que le puso sitio y levantó contra ella grandes baluartes;

15 N ow there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

pero en ella se hallaba un hombre pobre y sabio, el cual libró a la ciudad con su sabiduría. ¡Y nadie se acordaba de aquel hombre pobre!

16 T hen said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

Entonces dije yo: «Mejor es la sabiduría que la fuerza, aunque la ciencia del pobre sea menospreciada y no sean escuchadas sus palabras.»

17 T he words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Las palabras serenas del sabio son mejores que el clamor del señor entre los necios.

18 W isdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroyeth much good.

Mejor es la sabiduría que las armas de guerra; pero un solo error destruye mucho bien.
