1 N ow Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

Joram hijo de Acab comenzó a reinar en Samaria sobre Israel en el año dieciocho de Josafat, rey de Judá. Reinó doce años.

2 A nd he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.

Pero hizo lo malo a los ojos de Jehová, aunque no como su padre y su madre, pues quitó las estatuas de Baal que su padre había hecho.

3 N evertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

No obstante, se entregó a los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que hizo pecar a Israel, y no se apartó de ellos. Eliseo predice la victoria sobre Moab

4 N ow Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams.

Mesa, rey de Moab, era propietario de ganados y pagaba al rey de Israel cien mil corderos y cien mil carneros con su lana.

5 B ut it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

Pero cuando Acab murió, el rey de Moab se rebeló contra el rey de Israel.

6 A nd king Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.

Salió entonces de Samaria el rey Joram y pasó revista a todo Israel.

7 A nd he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.

Fue y envió a decir a Josafat, rey de Judá: «El rey de Moab se ha rebelado contra mí: ¿quieres venir conmigo a la guerra contra Moab?» El rey de Judá respondió: «Iré, porque yo soy como tú, mi pueblo como tu pueblo, y mis caballos como los tuyos.»

8 A nd he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way of the wilderness of Edom.

Y añadió: «¿Por qué camino iremos?» Joram respondió: «Por el camino del desierto de Edom.»

9 S o the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them.

Salieron, pues, el rey de Israel, el rey de Judá y el rey de Edom. Como tuvieron que dar un rodeo por el desierto, a los siete días de camino les faltó agua para el ejército y para las bestias que los seguían.

10 A nd the king of Israel said, Alas! for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

Entonces el rey de Israel dijo: —¡Ah! Jehová ha llamado a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los moabitas.

11 B ut Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, that we may inquire of Jehovah by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.

Pero Josafat dijo: —¿Acaso no hay aquí profeta de Jehová para que consultemos a Jehová por medio de él? Uno de los siervos del rey de Israel dijo: —Aquí está Eliseo hijo de Safat, que servía a Elías.

12 A nd Jehoshaphat said, The word of Jehovah is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

—Éste tendrá palabra de Jehová —afirmó Josafat. El rey de Israel, Josafat y el rey de Edom descendieron hacia donde él estaba.

13 A nd Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay; for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

Pero Eliseo dijo al rey de Israel: —¿Qué tengo yo que ver contigo? ¡Vete a los profetas de tu padre y a los profetas de tu madre! El rey de Israel le respondió: —No, porque Jehová ha reunido a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los moabitas.

14 A nd Elisha said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.

Eliseo dijo: —¡Vive Jehová de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy!, que si no sintiera respeto por Josafat, rey de Judá, no te miraría a ti ni te vería.

15 B ut now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Jehovah came upon him.

Pero ahora traedme un músico. Mientras el músico tocaba, la mano de Jehová se posó sobre Eliseo,

16 A nd he said, Thus saith Jehovah, Make this valley full of trenches.

quien dijo: «Así ha dicho Jehová: “Haced en este valle muchos estanques.”

17 F or thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts.

Porque así dice Jehová: “No veréis viento, ni veréis lluvia, pero este valle se llenará de agua y beberéis vosotros, vuestras bestias y vuestros ganados.”

18 A nd this is but a light thing in the sight of Jehovah: he will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.

Y como esto es poca cosa a los ojos de Jehová, él entregará también a los moabitas en vuestras manos.

19 A nd ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

Destruiréis toda ciudad fortificada y toda villa hermosa, talaréis todo buen árbol, cegaréis todas las fuentes de aguas y destruiréis con piedras toda tierra fértil.»

20 A nd it came to pass in the morning, about the time of offering the oblation, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

Aconteció, pues, que a la mañana, cuando se ofrece el sacrificio, de la parte de Edom vinieron las aguas y la tierra se inundó.

21 N ow when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border.

Al enterarse todos los de Moab que los reyes subían a pelear contra ellos, se juntaron desde los que apenas podían ceñir armadura en adelante, y se pusieron en la frontera.

22 A nd they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood:

Cuando se levantaron por la mañana y brilló el sol sobre las aguas, vieron los de Moab desde lejos las aguas rojas como sangre

23 a nd they said, This is blood; the kings are surely destroyed, and they have smitten each man his fellow: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.

y dijeron: «¡Esto es sangre derramada a espada! Los reyes se han vuelto uno contra otro y cada uno ha dado muerte a su compañero. Conque ¡al botín, Moab!»

24 A nd when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites.

Pero cuando llegaron al campamento de Israel, se levantaron los israelitas y atacaron a los de Moab, los cuales huyeron ante ellos. Entonces los persiguieron, mataron a los de Moab,

25 A nd they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir-hareseth only they left the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.

asolaron las ciudades y en todas las tierras fértiles echó cada uno su piedra y las llenaron. Cegaron también todas las fuentes de las aguas y derribaron todos los buenos árboles. Sólo quedó en pie la ciudad de Kir-hareset, pero los honderos la rodearon y la destruyeron.

26 A nd when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not.

Cuando el rey de Moab vio que lo vencían en la batalla, tomó consigo setecientos hombres que manejaban espada para atacar al rey de Edom; pero no pudieron hacerlo.

27 T hen he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

Entonces tomó a su primogénito, que había de reinar en su lugar, y lo sacrificó en holocausto sobre el muro. Esto provocó tan gran enojo contra Israel, que se alejaron de allí y regresaron a su tierra.
