1 B e not thou envious against evil men; Neither desire to be with them:

No tengas envidia de los hombres malos ni desees juntarte con ellos,

2 F or their heart studieth oppression, And their lips talk of mischief.

porque su corazón trama violencias e iniquidad hablan sus labios. -20-

3 T hrough wisdom is a house builded; And by understanding it is established;

Con sabiduría se edifica la casa, con prudencia se afirma

4 A nd by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and pleasant riches.

y con ciencia se llenan las cámaras de todo bien preciado y agradable. -21-

5 A wise man is strong; Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might,

El hombre sabio es fuerte, y de pujante vigor el que tiene ciencia.

6 F or by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Porque con ingenio harás la guerra, y en los muchos consejeros está la victoria. -22-

7 W isdom is too high for a fool: He openeth not his mouth in the gate.

Alta está para el insensato la sabiduría; en la puerta no abrirá él su boca. -23-

8 H e that deviseth to do evil, Men shall call him a mischief-maker.

Al que piensa hacer el mal lo llaman «hombre de malos pensamientos».

9 T he thought of foolishness is sin; And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

El pensamiento del necio es pecado, y abominable para los hombres el escarnecedor. -24-

10 I f thou faint in the day of adversity, Thy strength is small.

Si flaqueas en día de adversidad, tu fuerza quedará reducida. -25-

11 D eliver them that are carried away unto death, And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back.

Libra a los que son llevados a la muerte, salva a los que tienen su vida en peligro.

12 I f thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this; Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his work?

Porque si dices: «Lo cierto es que no lo supimos», ¿acaso no lo considerará el que pesa los corazones? El que mira por tu alma, él lo conocerá, y él pagará al hombre según sus obras. -26-

13 M y son, eat thou honey, for it is good; And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste:

Come, hijo mío, de la miel, porque es buena; el panal es dulce a tu paladar.

14 S o shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul; If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward, And thy hope shall not be cut off.

Así será para ti el conocimiento de la sabiduría: si la hallas tendrás recompensa y al fin tu esperanza no será frustrada. -27-

15 L ay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous; Destroy not his resting-place:

Tú, malvado, no aceches la morada del justo, no saquees el lugar de su descanso;

16 F or a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

porque aunque siete veces caiga el justo, volverá a levantarse, pero los malvados caerán en el mal. -28-

17 R ejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown;

No te regocijes cuando caiga tu enemigo, ni cuando él tropiece se alegre tu corazón,

18 L est Jehovah see it, and it displease him, And he turn away his wrath from him.

no sea que Jehová lo vea y le desagrade, y aparte de sobre él su enojo. -29-

19 F ret not thyself because of evil-doers; Neither be thou envious at the wicked:

No te juntes con los malignos ni envidies a los malvados,

20 F or there shall be no reward to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

porque para el malo no habrá buen fin: ¡la lámpara de los malvados se apagará! -30-

21 M y son, fear thou Jehovah and the king; And company not with them that are given to change:

Teme a Jehová, hijo mío, y al rey, y no te juntes con los veleidosos;

22 F or their calamity shall rise suddenly; And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it?

porque su desgracia llegará de repente; y el quebranto que viene de ambos, ¿quién puede saberlo? CUARTA COLECCIÓN://DICHOS DE LOS SABIOS

23 T hese also are sayings of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

También éstos son dichos de los sabios: Hacer distinción de personas en el juicio no es bueno.

24 H e that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him:

A quien diga al malo: «Tú eres justo», los pueblos lo maldecirán y lo detestarán las naciones;

25 B ut to them that rebuke him shall be delight, And a good blessing shall come upon them.

pero quienes lo reprendan tendrán felicidad y sobre ellos vendrá gran bendición.

26 H e kisseth the lips Who giveth a right answer.

¡Besados sean los labios del que responde con palabras correctas!

27 P repare thy work without, And make it ready for thee in the field; And afterwards build thy house.

Prepara tus labores fuera, dispónlas en tus campos y edifica después tu casa.

28 B e not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; And deceive not with thy lips.

No seas sin causa testigo contra tu prójimo ni digas falsedades con tus labios.

29 S ay not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.

No digas: «Haré con él como él hizo conmigo; pagaré a ese hombre según merece su obra.»

30 I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

Pasé junto al campo del hombre perezoso, junto a la viña del hombre falto de entendimiento;

31 A nd, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, The face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down.

y vi que por toda ella habían crecido los espinos, ortigas habían cubierto la tierra y la cerca de piedra ya estaba derribada.

32 T hen I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction:

Miré, y lo medité en mi corazón; lo vi, y aprendí la lección:

33 Y et a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep;

Un poco de sueño, dormitar otro poco y otro poco descansar mano sobre mano:

34 S o shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man.

así te llegará la miseria como un vagabundo, la pobreza como un hombre armado.
