1 T hen answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

Respondió Elifaz, el temanita, y dijo:

2 S hould a wise man make answer with vain knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind?

«¿Responderá el sabio con vana sabiduría y llenará su vientre de viento del este?

3 S hould he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

¿Disputará con palabras inútiles y con razones sin provecho?

4 Y ea, thou doest away with fear, And hinderest devotion before God.

Tú también destruyes el temor a Dios, y menoscabas la oración delante de él.

5 F or thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

Por cuanto tu boca ha revelado tu iniquidad, habiendo escogido el hablar con astucia,

6 T hine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

tu propia boca te condenará, no yo; y tus labios testificarán contra ti.

7 A rt thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?

»¿Acaso naciste tú antes que Adán? ¿Fuiste formado antes que los collados?

8 H ast thou heard the secret counsel of God? And dost thou limit wisdom to thyself?

¿Oíste tú acaso el secreto de Dios? ¿Está limitada a ti la sabiduría?

9 W hat knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?

¿Qué sabes tú que nosotros no sepamos? ¿Qué entiendes tú que nosotros no entendamos?

10 W ith us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much elder than thy father.

Cabezas canas hay entre nosotros, y hombres muy ancianos, mucho más avanzados en días que tu padre.

11 A re the consolations of God too small for thee, Even the word that is gentle toward thee?

¿En tan poco tienes el consuelo que viene de Dios y las amables palabras que se te dicen?

12 W hy doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes flash,

¿Por qué tu corazón te arrebata y por qué guiñan tus ojos,

13 T hat against God thou turnest thy spirit, And lettest words go out of thy mouth?

para que contra Dios vuelvas tu espíritu, y lances tales palabras por tu boca?

14 W hat is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

¿Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea puro, para que se justifique el nacido de mujer?

15 B ehold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight:

Dios en sus santos no confía, y ni aun los cielos son puros delante de sus ojos;

16 H ow much less one that is abominable and corrupt, A man that drinketh iniquity like water!

¿cuánto menos el hombre, este ser abominable y vil que bebe la iniquidad como agua?

17 I will show thee, hear thou me; And that which I have seen I will declare:

»Escúchame, pues yo te voy a mostrar y a contar lo que he visto,

18 ( Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hid it;

lo que los sabios nos contaron de sus padres, y no lo ocultaron:

19 U nto whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them):

que únicamente a ellos fue dada la tierra, y que ningún extraño pasó por en medio de ellos.

20 T he wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.

Todos sus días, el impío es atormentado de dolor, y el número de sus años le está escondido al violento.

21 A sound of terrors is in his ears; In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

Estruendos espantosos resuenan en sus oídos, y en la prosperidad el asolador vendrá sobre él.

22 H e believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, And he is waited for of the sword.

Él no cree que volverá de las tinieblas, y está descubierto frente a la espada.

23 H e wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

Vaga errante, tras el pan, diciendo: “¿Dónde está?” Sabe que le está preparado el día de tinieblas.

24 D istress and anguish make him afraid; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

Tribulación y angustia lo turban, y se lanzan contra él como rey dispuesto para la batalla,

25 B ecause he hath stretched out his hand against God, And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;

por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios y se portó con soberbia contra el Todopoderoso.

26 H e runneth upon him with a stiff neck, With the thick bosses of his bucklers;

Corrió contra él con el cuello erguido, tras la espesa barrera de sus escudos.

27 B ecause he hath covered his face with his fatness, And gathered fat upon his loins;

Aunque la grasa cubra su rostro y haga pliegues en sus costados,

28 A nd he hath dwelt in desolate cities, In houses which no man inhabited, Which were ready to become heaps;

habitará en ciudades asoladas, en casas desiertas y en ruinas.

29 H e shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.

No prosperará, ni durarán sus riquezas, ni extenderá sus bienes por la tierra.

30 H e shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, And by the breath of God's mouth shall he go away.

No escapará de las tinieblas, la llama secará sus ramas y perecerá con el aliento de la boca de Dios.

31 L et him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; For vanity shall be his recompense.

No confíe el iluso en la vanidad, porque ella será su recompensa.

32 I t shall be accomplished before his time, And his branch shall not be green.

Él será cortado antes de tiempo y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.

33 H e shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree.

Como la vid, perderá sus uvas antes de madurar, y esparcirá su flor como el olivo.

34 F or the company of the godless shall be barren, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

Porque la reunión de los impíos será asolada y el fuego consumirá la casa del que soborna.

35 T hey conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, And their heart prepareth deceit.

Concibieron dolor, dieron a luz iniquidad y en sus entrañas traman engaño.»
