1 M oreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:

Entonces Ahitofel dijo a Absalón: —Yo escogeré ahora doce mil hombres, me levantaré y seguiré a David esta noche.

2 a nd I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

Caeré sobre él mientras está cansado y sin fuerzas; lo atemorizaré y todo el pueblo que está con él huirá. Mataré solamente al rey,

3 a nd I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.

y así haré que todo el pueblo se vuelva hacia ti (pues tú buscas solamente la vida de un hombre); y cuando ellos hayan vuelto, todo el pueblo estará en paz.

4 A nd the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

Este consejo pareció bien a Absalón y a todos los ancianos de Israel.

5 T hen said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.

Y dijo Absalón: —Llamad también ahora a Husai, el arquita, para que también oigamos lo que él haya de decir.

6 A nd when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou.

Cuando Husai se presentó ante Absalón, éste le dijo: —Así ha dicho Ahitofel: ¿seguiremos su consejo, o no? Di tú.

7 A nd Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good.

Husai dijo a Absalón: —Esta vez, el consejo que ha dado Ahitofel no es bueno.

8 H ushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

Y añadió Husai: —Tú sabes que tu padre y los suyos son hombres valientes, y que están con amargura de ánimo, como la osa en el campo cuando le han quitado sus cachorros. Además, tu padre es hombre de guerra y no pasará la noche con el pueblo.

9 B ehold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them are fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

Seguro que ahora está escondido en alguna cueva o en otro lugar. Si al principio caen algunos de los tuyos, quienquiera que lo oiga dirá: “El pueblo que sigue a Absalón ha sido derrotado.”

10 A nd even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men.

Y aun el hombre valiente, cuyo corazón sea como corazón de león, desmayará por completo; porque todo Israel sabe que tu padre es hombre valiente, y que son esforzados los que están con él.

11 B ut I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

Aconsejo, pues, que todo Israel se reúna junto a ti, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, numeroso como la arena que está a la orilla del mar, y que tú en persona vayas a la batalla.

12 S o shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one.

Entonces lo atacaremos en cualquier lugar donde se halle; caeremos sobre él como cae el rocío sobre la tierra, y ni a él ni a ninguno de los que están con él dejaremos con vida.

13 M oreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

Y si se refugia en alguna ciudad, todos los de Israel llevarán sogas a aquella ciudad, y la arrastraremos hasta el arroyo, de modo que no se encuentre allí ni una piedra.

14 A nd Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For Jehovah had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom.

Entonces Absalón y todos los de Israel dijeron: «El consejo de Husai, el arquita, es mejor que el consejo de Ahitofel.» Ello porque Jehová había ordenado que el acertado consejo de Ahitofel se frustrara, para traer Jehová la ruina sobre Absalón.

15 T hen said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

Dijo luego Husai a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar: «Ahitofel ha aconsejado así y así a Absalón y a los ancianos de Israel; y esto otro aconsejé yo.

16 N ow therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.

Por tanto, mandad a dar aviso inmediatamente a David: “No te quedes esta noche en los llanos del desierto, sino pasa enseguida el Jordán, para que no sea exterminado el rey y todo el pueblo que con él está.”»

17 N ow Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city.

Jonatán y Ahimaas estaban junto a la fuente Rogel, y una criada fue y les avisó, porque no podían dejarse ver entrando en la ciudad. Luego ellos fueron y se lo comunicaron al rey David.

18 B ut a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.

Pero los vio un joven, que se lo hizo saber a Absalón; sin embargo, los dos partieron a toda prisa, y llegaron a casa de un hombre en Bahurim que tenía en su patio un pozo, dentro del cual se metieron.

19 A nd the woman took and spread the covering over the well's mouth, and strewed bruised grain thereon; and nothing was known.

La mujer de la casa tomó una manta, la extendió sobre la boca del pozo y tendió sobre ella el grano trillado, de manera que nada se notaba.

20 A nd Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They are gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

Al llegar los criados de Absalón a la casa de la mujer, le dijeron: —¿Dónde están Ahimaas y Jonatán? —Ya han pasado el vado de las aguas —respondió la mujer. Como ellos los buscaron y no los hallaron, volvieron a Jerusalén.

21 A nd it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.

Después que se marcharon, aquellos salieron del pozo y fueron a dar aviso al rey David diciéndole: «Levantaos y daos prisa a pasar las aguas, porque Ahitofel ha dado este consejo contra vosotros.»

22 T hen David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

Entonces se levantó David, y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, y pasaron el Jordán antes que amaneciera; ni uno solo dejó de pasar el Jordán.

23 A nd when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

Pero Ahitofel, viendo que no se había seguido su consejo, ensilló su asno, se levantó y se fue a su casa en su ciudad; y después de poner la casa en orden, se ahorcó. Así murió, y fue sepultado en el sepulcro de su padre.

24 T hen David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

David llegó a Mahanaim, mientras Absalón pasaba el Jordán con toda la gente de Israel.

25 A nd Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab's mother.

Absalón había nombrado a Amasa jefe del ejército en lugar de Joab. Amasa era hijo de un varón de Israel llamado Itra, el cual se había unido a Abigail, hija de Nahas, hermana de Sarvia, madre de Joab.

26 A nd Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.

Israel y Absalón acamparon en tierra de Galaad.

27 A nd it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

Luego que David llegó a Mahanaim, Sobi hijo de Nahas, de Rabá de los hijos de Amón, Maquir hijo de Amiel, de Lo-debar, y Barzilai, galaadita de Rogelim,

28 b rought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched grain, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse,

trajeron a David y al pueblo que estaba con él camas, tazas, vasijas de barro, trigo, cebada, harina, grano tostado, habas, lentejas, garbanzos tostados,

29 a nd honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

miel, manteca, ovejas y quesos de vaca, para que comieran; porque decían: «El pueblo está hambriento, cansado y sediento en el desierto.»
