1 A nd it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

Pasó mucho tiempo, y tres años después, llegó palabra de Jehová a Elías, diciendo: «Ve, muéstrate a Acab, y yo haré llover sobre la faz de la tierra.»

2 A nd Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria.

Fue, pues, Elías a mostrarse a Acab. En Samaria el hambre era grave.

3 A nd Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly:

Acab llamó a Abdías, su mayordomo. Abdías era muy temeroso de Jehová,

4 f or it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

pues cuando Jezabel destruía a los profetas de Jehová, Abdías tomó a cien profetas y los escondió en cuevas de cincuenta en cincuenta, y los sustentó con pan y agua.

5 A nd Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

Dijo, pues, Acab a Abdías: —Ve por el país a todas las fuentes de aguas y a todos los arroyos, a ver si acaso encontramos pasto con que conservar con vida a los caballos y a las mulas, para que no nos quedemos sin bestias.

6 S o they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

Y dividieron entre sí el país para recorrerlo; Acab fue por un camino y Abdías fue solo por otro.

7 A nd as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah?

Cuando Abdías iba por el camino, se encontró con Elías. Al reconocerlo, se postró sobre su rostro y dijo: —¿No eres tú Elías, mi señor?

8 A nd he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

—Yo soy; ve y dile a tu amo: “Aquí está Elías” —le respondió él.

9 A nd he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

Abdías contestó: —¿En qué he pecado para que entregues a tu siervo en manos de Acab para que me mate?

10 A s Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

¡Vive Jehová, tu Dios!, que no ha habido nación ni reino adonde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarte, y cuando respondían: “No está aquí”, hacía jurar a reinos y a naciones que no te habían hallado.

11 A nd now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

¿Y ahora tú dices: “Ve y dile a tu amo: ‘Aquí está Elías’”?

12 A nd it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.

Acontecerá que luego de que yo me haya ido, el espíritu de Jehová te llevará adonde yo no sepa. Y cuando yo vaya a dar la noticia a Acab, él no te hallará y me matará. Pero tu siervo teme a Jehová desde su juventud.

13 W as it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

¿No le han contado a mi señor lo que hice cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas de Jehová, que escondí en cuevas a cien de los profetas de Jehová, de cincuenta en cincuenta, y los mantuve con pan y agua?

14 A nd now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here; and he will slay me.

Y ahora dices tú: “Ve y dile a tu amo: ‘Aquí está Elías’”. ¿Quieres que me mate?

15 A nd Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

Elías le dijo: —¡Vive Jehová de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy!, que hoy me presentaré ante él.

16 S o Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

Entonces Abdías fue a encontrarse con Acab, le dio el aviso, y Acab fue a encontrarse con Elías.

17 A nd it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?

Cuando lo vio, le dijo: —¿Eres tú el que perturbas a Israel?

18 A nd he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.

Él respondió: —Yo no he perturbado a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, al abandonar los mandamientos de Jehová y seguir a los baales.

19 N ow therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel's table.

Manda, pues, ahora a que todo Israel se congregue en el monte Carmelo, con los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de Asera, que comen de la mesa de Jezabel. Elías y los profetas de Baal

20 S o Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

Acab convocó a todos los hijos de Israel, y reunió a los profetas en el monte Carmelo.

21 A nd Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

Entonces Elías, acercándose a todo el pueblo, dijo: —¿Hasta cuándo vacilaréis vosotros entre dos pensamientos? Si Jehová es Dios, seguidle; si Baal, id en pos de él. Y el pueblo no respondió palabra.

22 T hen said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

Elías siguió hablándole al pueblo: —Sólo yo he quedado como profeta de Jehová, mientras que de los profetas de Baal hay cuatrocientos cincuenta hombres.

23 L et them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.

Dénsenos, pues, dos bueyes, y escojan ellos uno; córtenlo en pedazos y pónganlo sobre leña, pero que no le prendan fuego. Yo prepararé el otro buey, lo pondré sobre leña, y tampoco le prenderé fuego.

24 A nd call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

Invocad luego vosotros el nombre de vuestros dioses; yo invocaré el nombre de Jehová. El Dios que responda por medio del fuego, ése es Dios. —Bien dicho —respondió todo el pueblo.

25 A nd Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under.

Entonces Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: «Escoged un buey y preparadlo vosotros primero, pues sois los más. Invocad luego el nombre de vuestros dioses, pero no le prendáis fuego.»

26 A nd they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.

Ellos tomaron el buey que les fue dado y lo prepararon, e invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía. Decían: «¡Baal, respóndenos!» Pero no se escuchó ninguna voz, ni hubo quien respondiera; entre tanto, ellos seguían saltando alrededor del altar que habían hecho.

27 A nd it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked.

Hacia el mediodía, Elías se burlaba de ellos diciendo: «Gritad con voz más fuerte, porque es un dios. Quizá esté meditando, o tenga algún trabajo, o se haya ido de viaje. ¡Tal vez esté durmiendo y haya que despertarlo!»

28 A nd they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.

Seguían ellos clamando a gritos, y se hacían cortes, conforme a su costumbre, con cuchillos y con lancetas, hasta que les chorreaba la sangre.

29 A nd it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

Pasó el mediodía y ellos siguieron gritando frenéticamente hasta la hora de ofrecer el sacrificio, pero no se escuchó ninguna voz, ni hubo quien respondiera ni escuchara.

30 A nd Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.

Entonces dijo Elías a todo el pueblo: «Acercaos a mí.» Todo el pueblo se le acercó, y Elías arregló el altar de Jehová que estaba arruinado.

31 A nd Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.

Tomó doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, al cual había sido dada palabra de Jehová diciendo: «Israel será tu nombre»,

32 A nd with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

y edificó con las piedras un altar al nombre de Jehová. Después hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en que cupieran dos medidas de grano.

33 A nd he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.

Preparó la leña, cortó el buey en pedazos, lo puso sobre la leña,

34 A nd he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.

y dijo: «Llenad cuatro cántaros de agua y derramadla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña.» «Hacedlo otra vez», dijo; y lo hicieron otra vez. «Hacedlo la tercera vez», dijo de nuevo; y lo hicieron la tercera vez,

35 A nd the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

de manera que el agua corría alrededor del altar, y también se había llenado de agua la zanja.

36 A nd it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

Cuando llegó la hora de ofrecer el holocausto, se acercó el profeta Elías y dijo: «Jehová, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, sea hoy manifiesto que tú eres Dios en Israel, que yo soy tu siervo y que por mandato tuyo he hecho todas estas cosas.

37 H ear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

Respóndeme, Jehová, respóndeme, para que conozca este pueblo que tú, Jehová, eres el Dios, y que tú haces que su corazón se vuelva a ti.»

38 T hen the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

Entonces cayó fuego de Jehová y consumió el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el polvo, y hasta lamió el agua que estaba en la zanja.

39 A nd when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.

Viéndolo todo el pueblo, se postraron y dijeron: «¡Jehová es el Dios, Jehová es el Dios!»

40 a nd Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

Entonces Elías les dijo: «Apresad a los profetas de Baal para que no escape ninguno.» Ellos los apresaron y Elías los condujo al arroyo Cisón y allí los degolló. Oración de Elías pidiendo lluvia

41 A nd Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.

Entonces Elías dijo a Acab: «Sube, come y bebe; porque ya se oye el ruido de la lluvia.»

42 S o Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.

Acab subió a comer y a beber. Pero Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo y, postrándose en tierra, puso el rostro entre las rodillas.

43 A nd he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

Luego dijo a su criado: —Sube ahora y mira hacia el mar. Él subió, miró y dijo: —No hay nada. Pero Elías le ordenó de nuevo: —Vuelve siete veces.

44 A nd it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

A la séptima vez el criado dijo: —Veo una pequeña nube como la palma de la mano de un hombre, que sube del mar. Elías dijo: —Ve y dile a Acab: “Unce tu carro y desciende, para que la lluvia no te lo impida.”

45 A nd it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:

Entre tanto, aconteció que los cielos se oscurecieron con nubes y viento, y hubo un gran aguacero. Subió a su carro Acab y se fue a Jezreel.

46 a nd the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Pero la mano de Jehová estaba sobre Elías, que se ciñó la cintura y corrió delante de Acab hasta llegar a Jezreel.
