1 N ow it came to pass, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and unto the rest of our enemies, that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though even unto that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;)

Cuando oyeron Sanbalat, Tobías, Gesem el árabe y los demás de nuestros enemigos que yo había edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él brecha alguna (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto las hojas de las puertas),

2 t hat Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

Sanbalat y Gesem enviaron a decirme: «Ven y reunámonos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono.» Pero ellos habían pensado hacerme mal.

3 A nd I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?

Entonces envié mensajeros para decirles: «Estoy ocupado en una gran obra y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra si yo la abandonara para ir a vosotros.»

4 A nd they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

Cuatro veces me enviaron mensajes sobre el mismo asunto, y yo les respondí de la misma manera.

5 T hen sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,

Entonces Sanbalat me envió a su criado para decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano,

6 w herein was written, It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel; for which cause thou art building the wall: and thou wouldest be their king, according to these words.

en la cual estaba escrito: «Se ha oído entre las naciones, y Gasmu lo dice, que tú y los judíos pensáis rebelaros y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey;

7 A nd thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.

y que has puesto profetas que, refiriéndose a ti, proclamen en Jerusalén: “¡Hay rey en Judá!” Estas palabras van a llegar a los oídos del rey; ven, por tanto, y consultemos juntos.»

8 T hen I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.

Entonces envié yo a decirle: «No hay nada de lo que dices, sino que son invenciones de tu corazón.»

9 F or they all would have made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. But now, O God, strengthen thou my hands.

Porque todos ellos nos amedrentaban, diciendo: «Se debilitarán las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será terminada.» «¡Ahora, pues, oh Dios, fortalece tú mis manos!»

10 A nd I went unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.

Después fui a casa de Semaías hijo de Delaía hijo de Mehetabel, porque estaba encerrado. Él me dijo: —Reunámonos en la casa de Dios, dentro del Templo, y cerremos las puertas, porque vienen a matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán a matarte.

11 A nd I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

Pero yo le respondí: —¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿Y quién, que fuera como yo, entraría al Templo para salvarse la vida? No entraré.

12 A nd I discerned, and, lo, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me: and Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

Reconocí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que decía aquella profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat lo habían sobornado.

13 F or this cause was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

Pues fue sobornado para intimidarme, para que así yo pecara. Ellos aprovecharían esto para crearme mala fama y desprestigiarme.

14 R emember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.

«¡Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat, conforme a estas cosas que hicieron; también acuérdate de la profetisa Noadías y de los otros profetas que procuraban infundirme miedo!»

15 S o the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.

Fue terminado, pues, el muro, el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.

16 A nd it came to pass, when all our enemies heard thereof, that all the nations that were about us feared, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.

Cuando lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las naciones que estaban alrededor de nosotros; se sintieron humillados y reconocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.

17 M oreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.

En aquellos días los principales de Judá enviaban muchas cartas a Tobías y recibían las de éste.

18 F or there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah to wife.

Porque muchos en Judá se habían aliado con él, pues era yerno de Secanías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado por mujer a la hija de Mesulam hijo de Berequías.

19 A lso they spake of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

También contaban delante de mí las buenas obras de Tobías, y a él le referían mis palabras. Y Tobías enviaba cartas para atemorizarme.
