1 A good name is better than precious oil; and the day of death, than the day of one's birth.

Mejor es la buena fama que el buen perfume, y mejor el día de la muerte que el día del nacimiento.

2 I t is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

Mejor es ir a la casa del luto que a la casa del banquete, porque aquello es el fin de todos los hombres, y el que vive lo tendrá presente en su corazón.

3 S orrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made glad.

Mejor es el pesar que la risa, porque con la tristeza del rostro se enmienda el corazón.

4 T he heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

El corazón de los sabios está en la casa del luto, mas el corazón de los insensatos, en la casa donde reina la alegría.

5 I t is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

Mejor es oír la reprensión del sabio que la canción de los necios,

6 F or as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

porque la risa del necio es como el crepitar de los espinos debajo de la olla. Y también esto es vanidad.

7 S urely extortion maketh the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroyeth the understanding.

Ciertamente la opresión hace enloquecer al sabio, y las dádivas corrompen el corazón.

8 B etter is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Mejor es el fin del negocio que su principio; mejor es el sufrido de espíritu que el altivo de espíritu.

9 B e not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

No te apresures en tu espíritu a enojarte, porque el enojo reposa en el seno de los necios.

10 S ay not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.

11 W isdom is as good as an inheritance; yea, more excellent is it for them that see the sun.

Buena es la ciencia con herencia, y provechosa para los que ven el sol;

12 F or wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.

porque escudo es la ciencia y escudo es el dinero; pero más ventajosa es la sabiduría, porque da vida a sus poseedores.

13 C onsider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

Mira la obra de Dios. ¿Quién podrá enderezar lo que él torció?

14 I n the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yea, God hath made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything that shall be after him.

En el día del bien goza del bien, y en el día de la adversidad, reflexiona. Dios hizo tanto el uno como el otro, a fin de que el hombre no sepa qué trae el futuro.

15 A ll this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil-doing.

Todo esto he visto en los días de mi vanidad. Justo hay que perece pese a su justicia, y hay malvado que pese a su maldad alarga sus días.

16 B e not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

No seas demasiado justo, ni sabio en exceso; ¿por qué habrás de destruirte?

17 B e not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

No quieras hacer mucho mal, ni seas insensato; ¿por qué habrás de morir antes de tu tiempo?

18 I t is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth from them all.

Bueno es que tomes esto, sin apartar de aquello tu mano; porque el que teme a Dios saldrá bien de todo.

19 W isdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city.

La sabiduría fortalece al sabio más que diez poderosos que haya en una ciudad.

20 S urely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

Ciertamente no hay en la tierra hombre tan justo, que haga el bien y nunca peque.

21 A lso take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee;

Tampoco apliques tu corazón a todas las cosas que se dicen, para que no oigas a tu siervo cuando habla mal de ti;

22 f or oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

porque tu corazón sabe que tú también hablaste mal de otros muchas veces.

23 A ll this have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

Todas estas cosas probé con sabiduría, diciendo: «¡Seré sabio!»; pero la sabiduría se apartó de mí.

24 T hat which is, is far off and exceeding deep; who can find it out?

Ya está lejos lo que fue; y lo muy profundo, ¿quién lo hallará?

25 I turned about, and my heart was set to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason of things, and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness.

Me volví entonces, y apliqué mi corazón a saber, examinar y buscar la sabiduría y la razón, para conocer la maldad de la insensatez y el desvarío del error.

26 A nd I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

Y más amarga que la muerte he hallado a la mujer cuyo corazón es trampas y redes, y sus manos ligaduras. El que agrada a Dios escapará de ella, pero el pecador queda en ella preso.

27 B ehold, this have I found, saith the Preacher, laying one thing to another, to find out the account;

He aquí, dice el Predicador, que pesando las cosas una por una para dar con la razón de ellas,

28 w hich my soul still seeketh, but I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

he hallado lo que aún busca mi alma, sin haberlo encontrado: Un hombre entre mil he hallado, pero ni una sola mujer entre todas.

29 B ehold, this only have I found: that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

He aquí, solamente esto he hallado: que Dios hizo al hombre recto, pero él se buscó muchas perversiones.
