1 N ow when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple unto Jehovah, the God of Israel;

Cuando los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín oyeron que los que habían vuelto de la cautividad edificaban un templo a Jehová, Dios de Israel,

2 t hen they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers' houses, and said unto them, Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as ye do; and we sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.

fueron a ver a Zorobabel y a los jefes de familia, y les dijeron: —Edificaremos con vosotros, porque, como vosotros, buscamos a vuestro Dios, y a él ofrecemos sacrificios desde los días de Esar-hadón, rey de Asiria, que nos hizo venir aquí.

3 B ut Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' houses of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us in building a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

Zorobabel, Jesúa y los demás jefes de casas paternas de Israel dijeron: —No nos conviene edificar con vosotros la casa de nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos a Jehová, Dios de Israel, como nos mandó Ciro, rey de Persia.

4 T hen the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

Entonces la gente del país intimidó al pueblo de Judá y lo atemorizó para que no siguiera edificando.

5 a nd hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Sobornaron además contra ellos a algunos consejeros para frustrar sus propósitos, durante todo el tiempo que Ciro fue rey de Persia y hasta el reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

6 A nd in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

En el reinado de Asuero, al principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.

7 A nd in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian character, and set forth in the Syrian tongue.

También en días de Artajerjes escribieron Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel y los demás compañeros suyos, a Artajerjes, rey de Persia; y la carta estaba escrita en arameo, y traducida.

8 R ehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

El canciller Rehum y el secretario Simsai escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes.

9 t hen wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

En esa fecha escribieron el canciller Rehum y el secretario Simsai, y los demás compañeros suyos, los jueces, gobernadores y oficiales, los de Persia, Erec, Babilonia y Susa, es decir, los elamitas,

10 a nd the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River, and so forth.

y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar deportó e hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria y las demás provincias del otro lado del río.

11 T his is the copy of the letter that they sent unto Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men beyond the River, and so forth.

Ésta es la copia de la carta que enviaron: «Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos del otro lado del río te saludan.

12 B e it known unto the king, that the Jews that came up from thee are come to us unto Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.

»Ha de saber el rey que los judíos que de parte tuya vinieron a nosotros, llegaron a Jerusalén y edifican esta ciudad rebelde y mala. Ya levantan los muros y reparan los fundamentos.

13 B e it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful unto the kings.

Sepa, pues, el rey, que si aquella ciudad es reedificada y los muros son levantados, no pagarán tributo, impuesto y rentas, y el erario de los reyes será perjudicado.

14 N ow because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not meet for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

Como nos mantienen desde el palacio, no podemos permitir que el rey sea menospreciado, por lo cual hemos enviado al rey esta denuncia,

15 t hat search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.

a fin de que se investigue en el libro de las memorias de tus padres. En el libro de las memorias encontrarás y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo en ella se han fomentado rebeliones. Por ese motivo esta ciudad fue destruida.

16 W e certify the king that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, by this means thou shalt have no portion beyond the River.

Hacemos saber al rey que si se reedifica esta ciudad y se levantan sus muros, la región de más allá del río no será tuya.»

17 T hen sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace, and so forth.

El rey envió esta respuesta: «Al canciller Rehum, al secretario Simsai, a los compañeros suyos que habitan en Samaria, y a los demás del otro lado del río: Salud y paz.

18 T he letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

»La carta que nos enviasteis fue leída claramente delante de mí.

19 A nd I decreed, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

Ordené que se investigara, y se ha encontrado que aquella ciudad se subleva desde antiguo contra los reyes, y que en ella se han fomentado revueltas e insurrecciones.

20 T here have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid unto them.

Que hubo en Jerusalén reyes fuertes, cuyo dominio se extendía a todo lo que hay más allá del río, y que se les pagaba tributo, impuestos y rentas.

21 M ake ye now a decree to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until a decree shall be made by me.

Ahora, pues, ordenad que se detengan aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad reedificada hasta nueva orden enviada por mí.

22 A nd take heed that ye be not slack herein: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

Procurad no ser negligentes en esto; ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño en perjuicio de los reyes?»

23 T hen when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

Cuando la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante de Rehum, de Simsai, el secretario, y de sus compañeros, salieron apresuradamente hacia Jerusalén, donde estaban los judíos, y les hicieron cesar los trabajos utilizando la fuerza y la violencia.

24 T hen ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Así se detuvo la obra de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, la cual quedó suspendida hasta el segundo año del reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.
