1 A nd it came to pass in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

Aconteció en los días que gobernaban los jueces, que hubo hambre en la tierra, y un hombre de Belén de Judá fue a vivir en los campos de Moab con su mujer y sus dos hijos.

2 A nd the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

Aquel hombre se llamaba Elimelec, y su mujer Noemí; los nombres de sus hijos eran Mahlón y Quelión, efrateos de Belén de Judá. Llegaron, pues, a los campos de Moab, y se quedaron allí.

3 A nd Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.

Murió Elimelec, marido de Noemí, y quedó ella con sus dos hijos,

4 A nd they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelt there about ten years.

los cuales se casaron con mujeres moabitas; una se llamaba Orfa y la otra Rut. Y habitaron allí unos diez años.

5 A nd Mahlon and Chilion died both of them; and the woman was left of her two children and of her husband.

Murieron también los dos, Mahlón y Quelión, quedando así la mujer desamparada, sin sus dos hijos y sin su marido.

6 T hen she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Jehovah had visited his people in giving them bread.

Entonces se puso en marcha con sus nueras, y regresó de los campos de Moab, porque oyó en el campo de Moab que Jehová había visitado a su pueblo para darle pan.

7 A nd she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

Salió, pues, del lugar donde había estado, y con ella sus dos nueras, y comenzaron a caminar para regresar a la tierra de Judá.

8 A nd Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to her mother's house: Jehovah deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

Y Noemí dijo a sus dos nueras: —Andad, volveos cada una a la casa de su madre. Que Jehová tenga de vosotras misericordia, como la habéis tenido vosotras con los que murieron y conmigo.

9 J ehovah grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

Os conceda Jehová que halléis descanso, cada una en casa de su marido. Luego las besó; pero ellas, alzando su voz y llorando,

10 A nd they said unto her, Nay, but we will return with thee unto thy people.

le dijeron: —Ciertamente nosotras iremos contigo a tu pueblo.

11 A nd Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

Noemí insistió: —Regresad, hijas mías; ¿para qué vendríais conmigo? ¿Acaso tengo yo más hijos en el vientre que puedan ser vuestros maridos?

12 T urn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should even have a husband to-night, and should also bear sons;

Regresad, hijas mías, marchaos, porque ya soy demasiado vieja para tener marido. Y aunque dijera: “Todavía tengo esperanzas”, y esta misma noche estuviera con algún marido, y aun diera a luz hijos,

13 w ould ye therefore tarry till they were grown? would ye therefore stay from having husbands? nay, my daughters, for it grieveth me much for your sakes, for the hand of Jehovah is gone forth against me.

¿los esperaríais vosotras hasta que fueran grandes? ¿Os quedarías sin casar por amor a ellos? No, hijas mías; mayor amargura tengo yo que vosotras, pues la mano de Jehová se ha levantado contra mí.

14 A nd they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clave unto her.

Alzaron ellas otra vez su voz y lloraron; Orfa besó a su suegra, pero Rut se quedó con ella.

15 A nd she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law is gone back unto her people, and unto her god: return thou after thy sister-in-law.

Noemí dijo: —Mira, tu cuñada ha regresado a su pueblo y a sus dioses; ve tú tras ella.

16 A nd Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, and to return from following after thee, for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God;

Rut respondió: —No me ruegues que te deje y me aparte de ti, porque a dondequiera que tú vayas, iré yo, y dondequiera que vivas, viviré. Tu pueblo será mi pueblo y tu Dios, mi Dios.

17 w here thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: Jehovah do so to me, and more also, if aught but death part thee and me.

Donde tú mueras, moriré yo y allí seré sepultada. Traiga Jehová sobre mí el peor de los castigos, si no es sólo la muerte lo que hará separación entre nosotras dos.

18 A nd when she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking unto her.

Al ver Noemí que Rut estaba tan resuelta a ir con ella, no insistió.

19 S o they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and the women said, Is this Naomi?

Anduvieron, pues, ellas dos hasta llegar a Belén. Cuando entraron en Belén, toda la ciudad se conmovió por su causa, y exclamaban: —¿No es ésta Noemí?

20 A nd she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.

Pero ella les respondía: —¡No me llaméis Noemí, sino llamadme Mara; porque el Todopoderoso me ha llenado de amargura!

21 I went out full, and Jehovah hath brought me home again empty; why call ye me Naomi, seeing Jehovah hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

Me fui llena, con las manos vacías me devuelve Jehová. ¿Por qué aún me llamáis Noemí, si ya Jehová ha dado testimonio contra mí y el Todopoderoso me ha afligido?

22 S o Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

Así regresó Noemí, y con ella su nuera, Rut, la moabita. Salieron de los campos de Moab y llegaron a Belén al comienzo de la cosecha de la cebada.
