1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, And loving favor rather than silver and gold.

Más vale el buen nombre que las muchas riquezas, y la buena fama vale más que la plata y el oro.

2 T he rich and the poor meet together: Jehovah is the maker of them all.

El rico y el pobre tienen en común que a ambos los hizo Jehová.

3 A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

El prudente ve el mal y se esconde, pero los ingenuos pasan y reciben el daño.

4 T he reward of humility and the fear of Jehovah Is riches, and honor, and life.

Riquezas, honor y vida son el premio de la humildad y del temor de Jehová.

5 T horns and snares are in the way of the perverse: He that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.

Espinos y trampas hay en el camino del perverso; el que a sí mismo se guarda se alejará de ellos.

6 T rain up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Instruye al niño en su camino, y ni aun de viejo se apartará de él.

7 T he rich ruleth over the poor; And the borrower is servant to the lender.

El rico se hace dueño de los pobres y el que toma prestado se hace siervo del que presta.

8 H e that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity; And the rod of his wrath shall fail.

El que siembra iniquidad, iniquidad segará, y la vara de su insolencia será quebrada.

9 H e that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; For he giveth of his bread to the poor.

El que mira con misericordia será bendito, porque dio de su pan al indigente.

10 C ast out the scoffer, and contention will go out; Yea, strife and ignominy will cease.

Echa fuera al escarnecedor y se terminará la contienda, y cesará el pleito y la afrenta.

11 H e that loveth pureness of heart, For the grace of his lips the king will be his friend.

El que ama la pureza del corazón, con la gracia de sus labios se ganará la amistad del rey.

12 T he eyes of Jehovah preserve him that hath knowledge; But he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.

Los ojos de Jehová velan por la ciencia, pero él trastorna las cosas de los prevaricadores.

13 T he sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be slain in the streets.

Dice el perezoso: «Ahí fuera hay un león: me matará en la calle».

14 T he mouth of strange women is a deep pit: He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein.

Fosa profunda es la boca de la mujer extraña, y en ella caerá el que provoque la ira de Jehová.

15 F oolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

La necedad está ligada al corazón del muchacho, pero la vara de la corrección la alejará de él.

16 H e that oppresseth the poor to increase his gain, And he that giveth to the rich, shall come only to want.

El que por aumentar sus ganancias oprime al pobre o da al rico, ciertamente se empobrecerá. Preceptos y amonestaciones

17 I ncline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

Inclina tu oído y escucha las palabras de los sabios y aplica tu corazón a mi sabiduría,

18 F or it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, If they be established together upon thy lips.

porque es cosa deliciosa que las guardes dentro de ti y que, a la vez, se afirmen en tus labios.

19 T hat thy trust may be in Jehovah, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.

Para que tu confianza esté puesta en Jehová te las he hecho saber hoy a ti también.

20 H ave not I written unto thee excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,

¿Acaso no te he escrito tres veces, con consejos y ciencia,

21 T o make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, That thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?

para hacerte saber con certidumbre las palabras de verdad, a fin de que vuelvas a llevar palabras de verdad a los que te enviaron? -1-

22 R ob not the poor, because he is poor; Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

No robes al pobre, porque es pobre, ni oprimas al desdichado en las puertas de la ciudad,

23 F or Jehovah will plead their cause, And despoil of life those that despoil them.

porque Jehová juzgará la causa de ellos y despojará de la vida a quienes los despojen. -2-

24 M ake no friendship with a man that is given to anger; And with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:

No te unas al iracundo ni te acompañes del irascible,

25 L est thou learn this ways, And get a snare to thy soul.

no sea que aprendas sus costumbres y pongas trampa a tu propia vida. -3-

26 B e thou not one of them that strike hands, Or of them that are sureties for debts.

No seas de aquellos que se comprometen, de los que salen fiadores de deudas ajenas.

27 I f thou hast not wherewith to pay, Why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

Si luego no tienes con qué pagar, ¿por qué habrán de quitar tu cama de debajo de ti? -4-

28 R emove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set.

No remuevas los linderos antiguos que pusieron tus padres. -5-

29 S eest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.

¿Has visto un hombre cuidadoso en su trabajo? Delante de los reyes estará, no delante de gente de baja condición.
