1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, And loving favor rather than silver and gold.

Un nume bun este mai de dorit decât mari bogăţii şi a fi apreciat face mai mult decât argintul şi aurul.

2 T he rich and the poor meet together: Jehovah is the maker of them all.

Bogatul şi săracul au un lucru comun: Domnul i-a creat pe amândoi.

3 A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

Omul prudent vede pericolul şi se ascunde, dar nesăbuitul merge înainte şi va suferi.

4 T he reward of humility and the fear of Jehovah Is riches, and honor, and life.

Smerenia şi frica de Domnul aduc bogăţie, onoare şi viaţă.

5 T horns and snares are in the way of the perverse: He that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.

Pe căile celui rău sunt spini şi curse, dar cine îşi păzeşte sufletul se ţine departe de ele.

6 T rain up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Învaţă-l pe copil calea pe care trebuie să meargă, iar când va îmbătrâni nu se va îndepărta de la ea.

7 T he rich ruleth over the poor; And the borrower is servant to the lender.

Bogatul domneşte peste sărac şi cel ce ia cu împrumut este slujitorul celui ce dă cu împrumut.

8 H e that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity; And the rod of his wrath shall fail.

Cine seamănă nedreptate va secera necaz şi nuiaua mâniei lui va fi distrusă.

9 H e that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; For he giveth of his bread to the poor.

Omul darnic va fi el însuşi binecuvântat pentru că împarte pâinea lui cu cel sărac.

10 C ast out the scoffer, and contention will go out; Yea, strife and ignominy will cease.

Izgoneşte-l pe batjocoritor şi cearta va înceta, conflictele şi insultele se vor sfârşi.

11 H e that loveth pureness of heart, For the grace of his lips the king will be his friend.

Cine iubeşte curăţia inimii şi are bunăvoinţa pe buze va fi prieten cu regele.

12 T he eyes of Jehovah preserve him that hath knowledge; But he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.

Ochii Domnului veghează asupra cunoştinţei, dar înfruntă cuvintele celui necredincios.

13 T he sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be slain in the streets.

Leneşul spune: „Afară este un leu!“ sau „Voi fi ucis pe străzi!“

14 T he mouth of strange women is a deep pit: He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein.

Gura femeii adultere este o groapă adâncă; cine este sub mânia Domnului va cădea în ea.

15 F oolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Nebunia este lipită de inima copilului, dar nuiaua disciplinării o va dezlipi de el.

16 H e that oppresseth the poor to increase his gain, And he that giveth to the rich, shall come only to want.

Cine asupreşte pe sărac ca să se îmbogăţească şi cine dă daruri celui bogat, amândoi vor sărăci. Proverbele înţelepţilor

17 I ncline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

Apleacă-ţi urechea şi ascultă cuvintele înţelepţilor; pune la inimă cunoştinţa mea,

18 F or it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, If they be established together upon thy lips.

căci este plăcut când le păstrezi în inima ta şi când îţi sunt toate pregătite pe buze.

19 T hat thy trust may be in Jehovah, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.

Pentru ca să-ţi pui încrederea în Domnul, de aceea te învăţ eu astăzi, da, chiar pe tine!

20 H ave not I written unto thee excellent things Of counsels and knowledge,

N-am scris eu oare treizeci de maxime pentru tine, maxime pentru sfaturi şi învăţătură,

21 T o make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, That thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?

ca să te învăţ adevărul şi cuvintele demne de încredere, ca să răspunzi cu vorbe adevărate celor ce te trimit?

22 R ob not the poor, because he is poor; Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

Nu-l exploata pe sărac pentru că este sărac şi nu-l asupri pe cel nevoiaş care stă la poarta cetăţii,

23 F or Jehovah will plead their cause, And despoil of life those that despoil them.

pentru că Domnul le va apăra cauza şi-i va jefui pe cei ce-i jefuiesc!

24 M ake no friendship with a man that is given to anger; And with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:

Nu te împrieteni cu omul mânios şi nu te asocia cu omul iute la mânie,

25 L est thou learn this ways, And get a snare to thy soul.

ca nu cumva să înveţi căile lui şi să-ţi ajungă astfel o capcană pentru suflet!

26 B e thou not one of them that strike hands, Or of them that are sureties for debts.

Să nu fii printre oamenii care oferă garanţie sau care girează pentru datorii,

27 I f thou hast not wherewith to pay, Why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

căci, dacă nu ai cu ce să plăteşti, chiar patul tău va fi luat de sub tine!

28 R emove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set.

Nu muta hotarul cel vechi, pe care l-au aşezat strămoşii tăi!

29 S eest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.

Vezi un om iscusit în munca lui? El va sluji înaintea regilor, nu înaintea oamenilor de rând.
