1 T hen we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Jehovah spake unto me; and we compassed mount Seir many days.

Apoi ne-am întors şi am mers în pustie, pe drumul către Marea Roşie, după porunca Domnului. Am înconjurat multe zile muntele Seir.

2 A nd Jehovah spake unto me, saying,

Domnul mi-a zis:

3 Y e have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

«Ajunge cât aţi înconjurat muntele acesta! Întoarceţi-vă spre nord!

4 A nd command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore;

Porunceşte poporului următorul lucru: ‘Acum veţi traversa teritoriul fraţilor voştri, urmaşii lui Edom, care locuiesc în Seir. Ei se vor teme de voi, dar voi să vă păziţi bine.

5 c ontend not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

Nu-i provocaţi la luptă, fiindcă nu vă voi da nimic din ţara lor, nici măcar o palmă de pământ. Muntele Seir i l-am dat în stăpânire lui Esau.

6 Y e shall purchase food of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

Să cumpăraţi de la ei pe preţ de argint hrană, ca să aveţi ce mânca şi să cumpăraţi de la ei pe preţ de argint apă, ca să aveţi ce bea,

7 F or Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand; he hath known thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years Jehovah thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

căci Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, a binecuvântat toată lucrarea mâinilor voastre. El cunoaşte călătoria voastră prin pustia cea mare; în timpul acestor patruzeci de ani Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, a fost cu voi şi nu aţi dus lipsă de nimic’.»

8 S o we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

Şi astfel am trecut pe lângă fraţii noştri, urmaşii lui Esau, care locuiau în Seir, departe de drumul spre Araba, departe de Elat şi de Eţion-Gheber; apoi ne-am întors şi am luat-o pe drumul care traversează pustia Moabului.

9 A nd Jehovah said unto me, Vex not Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee of his land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.

Domnul mi-a zis: «Să nu-i asediaţi pe moabiţi şi să nu-i provocaţi la luptă, fiindcă nu vă voi da nimic din ţara lor; cetatea Ar am dat-o în stăpânirea urmaşilor lui Lot.»

10 ( The Emim dwelt therein aforetime, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim:

(În trecut aici locuiau emiţii, un popor puternic, numeros şi de statură înaltă asemenea anachiţilor.

11 t hese also are accounted Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.

Ei erau consideraţi refaiţi ca şi anachiţii, dar moabiţii îi numeau emiţi.

12 T he Horites also dwelt in Seir aforetime, but the children of Esau succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which Jehovah gave unto them.)

În Seir au locuit în trecut şi horiţii, însă urmaşii lui Esau i-au ocupat, i-au nimicit şi au locuit în locul lor, la fel cum a făcut Israel în ţara pe care Domnul i-a dat-o ca moştenire.)

13 N ow rise up, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.

«Acum ridicaţi-vă şi traversaţi uedul Zared!» Şi noi am traversat uedul Zared.

14 A nd the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah sware unto them.

Perioada de când am plecat din Kadeş-Barnea şi până la traversarea uedului Zared a fost de treizeci şi opt de ani, timp în care toată generaţia de luptători a pierit din mijlocul taberei, aşa cum jurase Domnul.

15 M oreover the hand of Jehovah was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.

Într-adevăr mâna Domnului a fost împotriva lor ca să-i nimicească din mijlocul taberei, până ce au pierit.

16 S o it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

După ce au murit toţi luptătorii din mijlocul poporului,

17 t hat Jehovah spake unto me, saying,

Domnul mi-a vorbit:

18 T hou art this day to pass over Ar, the border of Moab:

«Astăzi vei trece hotarul Moabului pe la Ar.

19 a nd when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, vex them not, nor contend with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

Când te vei apropia de amoniţi, să nu-i asediezi şi să nu-i provoci la luptă, fiindcă nu-ţi voi da nimic din ţara lor, pentru că am dat-o în stăpânirea urmaşilor lui Lot.»

20 ( That also is accounted a land of Rephaim: Rephaim dwelt therein aforetime; but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,

(Şi această ţară era considerată ca fiind a refaiţilor, deoarece ei au locuit-o în trecut; amoniţii îi numeau zamzumimi.

21 a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Jehovah destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead;

Ei erau un popor puternic, numeros şi de statură înaltă asemenea anachiţilor. Domnul i-a nimicit dinaintea amoniţilor care i-au ocupat şi au locuit în locul lor.

22 a s he did for the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

La fel a făcut şi pentru urmaşii lui Esau, care locuiau în Seir, când i-a nimicit pe horiţi dinaintea lor. Ei i-au ocupat şi au locuit în acel loc până în ziua de azi.

23 a nd the Avvim, that dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, that came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

Tot aşa s-a întâmplat şi cu aviţii care locuiau în satele dimprejurul Gazei. Caftoriţii, veniţi din Caftor, i-au distrus şi au locuit în locul lor.) Înfrângerea lui Sihon, regele Heşbonului

24 R ise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon: behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

«Ridică-te şi traversează uedul Arnon, pentru că l-am dat în mâinile tale pe Sihon amoritul, regele Heşbonului, împreună cu ţara lui. Începe cucerirea şi provoacă-l la luptă.

25 T his day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

De azi încolo voi băga groaza şi frica de tine în toate popoarele de sub cer. Când vor auzi veşti despre tine, vor începe să tremure şi se vor îngrozi.»

26 A nd I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

Din pustia Chedemot am trimis soli lui Sihon, regele Heşbonului, cu gând de pace, ca să-i spun:

27 L et me pass through thy land: I will go along by the highway, I will turn neither unto the right hand nor to the left.

«Lasă-mă să trec prin ţara ta! Voi merge numai pe drum şi nu mă voi abate nici la dreapta, nici la stânga.

28 T hou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only let me pass through on my feet,

Să-mi vinzi pe preţ de argint doar hrană, ca să am ce mânca şi apă, ca să am ce bea. Lasă-mă doar s-o traversez mergând pe jos –

29 a s the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, and the Moabites that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God giveth us.

aşa cum m-au lăsat urmaşii lui Esau, care locuiesc în Seir şi moabiţii care locuiesc în Ar – până când voi traversa Iordanul în ţara pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, ne-o dă.»

30 B ut Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as at this day.

Dar Sihon, regele Heşbonului, nu ne-a lăsat să trecem, pentru că Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, i-a făcut duhul neînduplecat şi i-a împietrit inima ca să-l dea în mâinile tale, după cum vezi astăzi.

31 A nd Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

Domnul mi-a zis: «Iată că am început să ţi-l dau pe Sihon împreună cu ţara lui; ia în stăpânire teritoriul lui.»

32 T hen Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Jahaz.

Când Sihon împreună cu toţi oamenii săi a ieşit la luptă împotriva noastră la Iahaţ,

33 A nd Jehovah our God delivered him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, l-a dat în mâinile noastre; noi l-am lovit de moarte atât pe el, cât şi pe fiii lui şi pe întregul lui popor.

34 A nd we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones; we left none remaining:

Le-am cucerit atunci toate cetăţile şi am distrus tot ce era în ele – bărbaţi, femei şi copii. N-am lăsat nici un supravieţuitor.

35 o nly the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken.

Numai animalele şi bunurile din cetăţi le-am luat ca pradă pentru noi.

36 F rom Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, even unto Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; Jehovah our God delivered up all before us:

De la Aroer, care este pe malul uedului Arnon şi de la cetatea care se află în defileu, până la Ghilad n-a existat nici o cetate prea puternică pentru noi. Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, ni le-a dat pe toate.

37 o nly to the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not near; all the side of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill-country, and wheresoever Jehovah our God forbade us.

Însă de ţara amoniţilor, de malurile uedului Iabok şi de cetăţile din regiunea muntoasă nu v-aţi atins, aşa cum a poruncit Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru.
