1 B etter is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife.

2 A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.

Un sclav înţelept va domni peste un fiu care aduce ruşine şi va avea parte de moştenire ca unul din fraţi.

3 T he refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts.

Creuzetul este pentru argint şi cuptorul pentru aur, dar Cel Ce testează inima este Domnul.

4 A n evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; And a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

Cel ce face răul ascultă de buzele înşelătoare şi cel mincinos dă atenţie limbii răutăcioase.

5 W hoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; And he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

Cine îl batjocoreşte pe sărac Îl dispreţuieşte pe Creatorul lui; cine se bucură de o nenorocire nu va rămâne nepedepsit.

6 C hildren's children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers.

Nepoţii sunt cununa bătrânilor, iar părinţii sunt slava copiilor lor.

7 E xcellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince.

Cuvintele alese nu se potrivesc celui nebun, cu atât mai puţin buzele mincinoase pentru un nobil.

8 A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

Mita este o piatră preţioasă în ochii celui ce o oferă; orice face, el reuşeşte.

9 H e that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.

Cine acoperă o jignire caută dragostea, dar cine o aminteşte mereu dezbină pe cei mai buni prieteni.

10 A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool.

O mustrare pătrunde mai mult pe cel priceput decât o sută de lovituri pe cel prost.

11 A n evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

Cel rău este înclinat doar spre revoltă; un sol fără milă va fi trimis împotriva lui.

12 L et a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.

Mai bine să întâlneşti o ursoaică prădată de puii ei, decât un prost în nesăbuinţa lui.

13 W hoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.

Dacă un om întoarce rău pentru bine, nici răul nu-i va părăsi casa.

14 T he beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

Începutul unei certe este ca ruperea unui stăvilar de apă; de aceea, opreşte cearta înainte de a se înteţi!

15 H e that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

Cel ce îndreptăţeşte pe cel rău şi cel ce condamnă pe cel drept sunt amândoi o urâciune înaintea Domnului.

16 W herefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?

Ce folos au banii în mâna celui prost? Ca să cumpere înţelepciunea? Dar n-are minte …

17 A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.

Prietenul iubeşte oricând, iar fratele s-a născut să fie alături în necaz.

18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor.

Omul nechibzuit dă garanţie şi girează pentru semenul său.

19 H e loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.

Cine iubeşte cearta iubeşte păcatul; cine construieşte o poartă înaltă îşi atrage distrugerea.

20 H e that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

Cel cu inima necinstită nu are parte de bine şi cel cu limba înşelătoare cade în necaz.

21 H e that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy.

Cine naşte un prost va avea întristare şi tatăl unui nebun nu va avea bucurie.

22 A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.

O inimă veselă este un bun leac, dar un duh mâhnit usucă oasele.

23 A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice.

Cel rău acceptă mita pe ascuns, ca să corupă căile dreptăţii.

24 W isdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

Înţelepciunea este înaintea omului priceput, dar ochii prostului o caută la capătul pământului.

25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him.

Un fiu prost aduce întristare tatălui său şi amărăciune celei ce l-a născut.

26 A lso to punish the righteous is not good, Nor to smite the noble for their uprightness.

Nu este bine să pedepseşti pe cel nevinovat, nici să loveşti pe cei nobili din cauza integrităţii lor.

27 H e that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

Un om înzestrat cu ştiinţă îşi înfrânează cuvintele şi cel înţelept are un duh calm.

28 E ven a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is esteemed as prudent.

Chiar şi un prost este considerat înţelept dacă tace şi priceput dacă-şi ţine gura.
