1 B etter is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife.

2 A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.

Раб розумний панує над сином безпутнім, і серед братів він поділить спадок.

3 T he refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts.

Для срібла топильна посудина, а горно для золота, Господь же серця випробовує.

4 A n evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; And a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

Лиходій слухається уст безбожних, слухає неправдомов язика лиходійного.

5 W hoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; And he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

Хто сміється з убогого, той ображає свого Творця, хто радіє з нещастя, не буде такий без вини.

6 C hildren's children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers.

Корона для старших онуки, а пишнота дітей їхні батьки.

7 E xcellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince.

Не пристойна безумному мова поважна, а тим більше шляхетному мова брехлива.

8 A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

Хабар в очах його власника самоцвіт: до всього, до чого повернеться, буде щастити йому.

9 H e that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.

Хто шукає любови провину ховає, хто ж про неї повторює, розгонює друзів.

10 A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool.

На розумного більше впливає одне остереження, як на глупака сто ударів.

11 A n evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

Злий шукає лише неслухняности, та вісник жорстокий на нього пошлеться.

12 L et a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.

Ліпше спіткати обездітнену ведмедицю, що кидається на людину, аніж нерозумного в глупоті його.

13 W hoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.

Хто відплачує злом за добро, не відступить лихе з його дому.

14 T he beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

Почин сварки то прорив води, тому перед вибухом сварки покинь ти її!

15 H e that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

Хто оправдує несправедливого, і хто засуджує праведного, обидва вони Господеві огидні.

16 W herefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?

Нащо ті гроші в руці нерозумного, щоб мудрість купити, як мозку нема?

17 A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.

Правдивий друг любить за всякого часу, в недолі ж він робиться братом.

18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor.

Людина, позбавлена розуму, ручиться, поруку дає за друга свого.

19 H e loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.

Хто сварку кохає, той любить гріх; хто ж підвищує уста свої, той шукає нещастя.

20 H e that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

Людина лукавого серця не знайде добра, хто ж лукавить своїм язиком, упаде в зло.

21 H e that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy.

Хто родить безумного, родить на смуток собі, і не потішиться батько безглуздого.

22 A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.

Серце радісне добре лікує, а пригноблений дух сушить кості.

23 A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice.

Безбожний таємно бере хабара, щоб зігнути путі правосуддя.

24 W isdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

З обличчям розумного мудрість, а очі глупця аж на кінці землі.

25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him.

Нерозумний син смуток для батька, для своєї ж родительки гіркість.

26 A lso to punish the righteous is not good, Nor to smite the noble for their uprightness.

Не добре карати справедливого, бити шляхетних за щирість!

27 H e that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

Хто слова свої стримує, той знає пізнання, і холоднокровний розумна людина.

28 E ven a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is esteemed as prudent.

І глупак, як мовчить, уважається мудрим, а як уста свої закриває розумним.
