1 O n that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God for ever,

Того дня читане було з Мойсеєвої книги вголос народу, і було знайдене написане в ній, що Аммонітянин та Моавітянин не ввійде до Божої громади, і так буде аж навіки,

2 b ecause they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

бо вони не стріли були Ізраїлевих синів хлібом та водою, і найняли були на нього Валаама проклясти його, та Бог наш обернув те прокляття на благословення.

3 A nd it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

І сталося, як почули вони Закон, то відділили від Ізраїля все чуже.

4 N ow before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being allied unto Tobiah,

А перед тим священик Ел'яшів, призначений до комори дому нашого Бога, близький Товійїн,

5 h ad prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meal-offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the heave-offerings for the priests.

то зробив йому велику комору, а туди давали колись жертву хлібну, ладан, і посуд, і десятину збіжжя, молоде вино та оливу, призначені заповіддю для Левитів, і співаків, і придверних, і священичі принесення.

6 B ut in all this time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went unto the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king,

А за ввесь цей час не був я в Єрусалимі, бо в тридцять другому році Артаксеркса, царя вавилонського, я прийшов був до царя, та по певному часі випросився я від царя.

7 a nd I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

І прийшов я до Єрусалиму, і розглянувся в тому злі, що зробив Єл'яшів Товійї, роблячи йому комору на подвір'ях Божого дому.

8 A nd it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.

І було мені дуже зле, й я всі домашні Товійїні речі повикидав геть із комори.

9 T hen I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meal-offerings and the frankincense.

І я сказав, і очистили комори, а я вернув туди посуд Божого дому, хлібну жертву та ладан.

10 A nd I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.

І довідався я, що левитські частки не давалися, а вони повтікали кожен на поле своє, ті Левити та співаки, що робили свою працю.

11 T hen contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

І докоряв я заступникам та й сказав: Чого опущений дім Божий? І зібрав я їх, і поставив їх на їхніх місцях.

12 T hen brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

І вся Юдея приносила десятину збіжжя, і молодого вина, і оливи до скарбниць.

13 A nd I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute unto their brethren.

І настановив я над скарбницями священика Шелемію й книжника Садока та Педаю з Левитів, а на їхню руку Ханана, сина Заккура, сина Маттаніїного, бо вони були уважані за вірних. І на них покладено ділити частки для їхніх братів.

14 R emember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the observances thereof.

Пам'ятай же мене, Боже, за це, і не зітри моїх добродійств, які я зробив у Божому домі та в сторожах!

15 I n those days saw I in Judah some men treading wine-presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses therewith; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

Тими днями бачив я в Юдеї таких, що топтали в суботу чавила, і носили снопи, і нав'ючували на ослів вино, виноград, і фіґі, і всілякий тягар, і везли до Єрусалиму суботнього дня. І я при свідках остеріг їх того дня, коли вони продавали живність.

16 T here dwelt men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all manner of wares, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

А тиряни мешкали в ньому, і постачали рибу й усе на продаж, і продавали в суботу Юдиним синам та в Єрусалимі.

17 T hen I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

І докоряв я Юдиним шляхетним та й сказав їм: Що це за річ, яку ви робите, і безчестите суботній день?

18 D id not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

Чи ж не так робили ваші батьки, а наш Бог спровадив усе це зло на нас та на це місто? А ви побільшуєте жар гніву на Ізраїля зневажанням суботи.

19 A nd it came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I over the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

І бувало, як падала вечерова тінь на єрусалимські брами перед суботою, то я наказував, і були замикувані брами. І звелів я, щоб не відчиняли їх, а тільки аж по суботі. А біля брам я поставив слуг своїх, щоб тягар не входив суботнього дня!

20 S o the merchants and sellers of all kind of wares lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

І ночували крамарі та продавці всього продажного раз і два поза Єрусалимом.

21 T hen I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.

І остеріг я їх при свідках та й сказав їм: Чого ви ночуєте навпроти муру? Якщо ви повторите це, я простягну руку на вас! Від того часу вони не приходили в суботу.

22 A nd I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember unto me, O my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy lovingkindness.

І сказав я Левитам, щоб вони очистилися й приходили стерегти брами, щоб освятити суботній день. Також це запам'ятай мені, Боже мій, і змилуйся надо мною за великістю милости Твоєї!

23 I n those days also saw I the Jews that had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

Тими днями бачив я також юдеїв, що брали собі за жінок ашдодянок, аммонітянок, моавітянок.

24 a nd their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.

А їхні сини говорили наполовину по-ашдодському, і не вміли говорити по-юдейському, а говорили мовою того чи того народу.

25 A nd I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

І докоряв я їм, і проклинав їх, і бив декого з них, і рвав їм волосся, і заприсягав їх Богом, кажучи: Не давайте ваших дочок їхнім синам, і не беріть їхніх дочок для ваших синів та для вас.

26 D id not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin.

Чи ж не цим згрішив був Соломон, Ізраїлів цар, а між багатьма народами не було такого царя, як він, і був уподобаний Богові своєму, і Бог настановив його царем над усім Ізраїлем, і його ввели в гріх ті чужі жінки?

27 S hall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?

І тому чи ж чуте було таке, щоб чинити все це велике лихо на спроневірення проти нашого Бога, щоб брати чужих жінок?

28 A nd one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

А один із синів Йояди, сина Ел'яшіва, великого священика, був зятем хоронянина Санваллата, і я вигнав його від себе!

29 R emember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

Запам'ятай же їм, Боже мій, за сплямлення священства та заповіту священичого та левитського!

30 T hus cleansed I them from all foreigners, and appointed charges for the priests and for the Levites, every one in his work;

І очистив я їх від усього чужого, і встановив черги для священиків та для Левитів, кожного в службі їх,

31 a nd for the wood-offering, at times appointed, and for the first-fruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

і для пожертви дров в означених часах, і для первоплодів. Запам'ятай же мене, боже мій, на добро!
