1 A nd it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:

І сталося, що коли Аполлос перебував у Коринті, то Павло, перейшовши горішні країни, прибув до Ефесу, і деяких учнів знайшов,

2 a nd he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.

та й спитав їх: Чи ви Духа Святого одержали, як увірували? А вони відказали йому: Та ми навіть не чули, чи є Дух Святий!

3 A nd he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism.

І він запитав: Тож у що ви христились? Вони ж відказали: В Іванове хрищення.

4 A nd Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

І промовив Павло: Таж Іван христив хрищенням на покаяння, говорячи людям, щоб вірили в Того, Хто прийде по ньому, цебто в Ісуса.

5 A nd when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

Як почули ж оце, то христились вони в Ім'я Господа Ісуса.

6 A nd when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

А коли Павло руки на них поклав, то зійшов на них Дух Святий, і різними мовами стали вони промовляти та пророкувати!

7 A nd they were in all about twelve men.

А всіх їх було чоловіка з дванадцять.

8 A nd he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.

А до синагоги ввійшовши, промовляв він відважно, три місяці про Боже Царство навчаючи та переконуючи.

9 B ut when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

А коли опиралися дехто й не вірували, і дорогу Господню лихословили перед народом, то він їх покинув і виділив учнів, і щодня проповідував у школі одного Тирана.

10 A nd this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

Це ж два роки продовжувалось, так що всі, хто замешкував в Азії, юдеї та геллени, слухали слово про Господа.

11 A nd God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

І Бог чуда чинив надзвичайні руками Павловими,

12 i nsomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out.

так що навіть хустки й пояси з його тіла приносили хворим, і хвороби їх кидали, і духи лукаві виходили з них.

13 B ut certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

Дехто ж із мандрівних ворожбитів юдейських зачали закликати Ім'я Господа Ісуса над тими, хто мав злих духів, проказуючи: Заклинаємо вас Ісусом, Якого Павло проповідує!

14 A nd there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.

Це ж робили якісь сім синів юдейського первосвященика Скеви.

15 A nd the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye?

Відповів же злий дух і сказав їм: Я знаю Ісуса, і знаю Павла, а ви хто такі?

16 A nd the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

І скочив на них чоловік, що в ньому злий дух був, і, перемігши обох, подужав їх так, що втекли вони з дому нагі та поранені.

17 A nd this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

І це стало відоме юдеям та гелленам, усім, що в Ефесі замешкують, і острах напав на всіх їх, і славилося Ім'я Господа Ісуса.

18 M any also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.

І багато-хто з тих, що ввірували, приходили, визнаваючи та відкриваючи вчинки свої.

19 A nd not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

І багато-хто з тих, що займалися чарами, позносили книги свої та й перед усіма попалили. І злічили ціну їх, і вийшло на срібло п'ятдесят тисяч драхм.

20 S o mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.

Так могуче росло та зміцнялося Божеє Слово!

21 N ow after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

А як сповнилось це, Павло в Дусі задумав перейти Македонію та Ахаю, та й удатись у Єрусалим, говорячи: Як побуду я там, то треба мені й Рим побачити.

22 A nd having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

Тож він послав у Македонію двох із тих, що служили йому, Тимофія й Ераста, а сам позостався якийсь час ув Азії.

23 A nd about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

І розрух чималий був стався там часу того за Господню дорогу.

24 F or a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;

Бо один золотар, Дмитро на ім'я, що робив срібляні Артемідині храмки, та ремісникам заробіток чималий давав,

25 w hom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.

згромадив він їх і ще інших подібних робітників, та й промовив: Ви знаєте, мужі, що з цього ремесла заробіток ми маємо.

26 A nd ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:

І ви бачите й чуєте, що не тільки в Ефесі, але мало не в усій Азії цей Павло збаламутив і відвернув багатенно народу, говорячи, ніби то не боги, що руками пороблені.

27 a nd not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

І не тільки оце нам загрожує, що прийде зайняття в упадок, а й храм богині великої Артеміди в ніщо зарахується, і буде зруйнована й велич тієї, що шанує її ціла Азія та цілий світ.

28 A nd when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus.

Почувши ж оце, вони переповнились гнівом, та й стали кричати, говорячи: Артеміда ефеська велика!

29 A nd the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel.

І місто наповнилось заколотом. І кинулися однодушно до видовища, схопивши Павлових супутників Гая та Аристарха, македонян.

30 A nd when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

Як Павло ж хотів у народ увійти, то учні його не пустили.

31 A nd certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.

Також дехто з азійських начальників, що були йому приятелі, послали до нього й просили, щоб він не вдававсь на видовище.

32 S ome therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

І кожен що інше кричав, бо збори бурхливі були, і багатенно з них навіть не знали, чого ради зібралися.

33 A nd they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defense unto the people.

А з народу взяли Олександра, бо юдеї його висували. І Олександер дав знака рукою, і хотів виправдатися перед народом.

34 B ut when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

А коли розпізнали, що юдеянин він, то злилися всі в один голос, і годин зо дві гукали: Артеміда ефеська велика!

35 A nd when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

А як писар міський заспокоїв народ, то промовив: Мужі ефеські, яка ж то людина не знає, що місто Ефес то храмовий доглядач Артеміди великої й її образу, упалого з неба?

36 S eeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

Коли ж цьому перечити не можна, то потрібно вам бути спокійними, і не робити необачно нічого.

37 F or ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.

А ви ж привели цих людей, що ані святокрадці, ані вашої богині не зневажили.

38 I f therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

Отож, як Дмитро та його ремісники мають справу на кого, то суди є на ринку й проконсули, один одного хай позивають.

39 B ut if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.

А коли чогось іншого допоминаєтеся, то те вирішиться на законнім зібранні.

40 F or indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.

Бо ось є небезпека, що нас за сьогоднішній розрух оскаржити можуть, і немає жадної причини, якою могли б виправдати це зборище.

41 A nd when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

(19-40) І, промовивши це, розпустив він громаду.
