1 B ut the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the devoted thing: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the children of Israel.

І спроневірилися Ізраїлеві сини в заклятому, Ахан, син Кармія, сина Завдієвого, сина Зерахового, Юдиного племени, узяв із заклятого. І запалився Господній гнів на Ізраїлевих синів.

2 A nd Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.

І послав Ісус мужів з Єрихону в Ай, що при Бет-Евені, на схід від Бет-Елу, і сказав до них, говорячи: Підіть, і вивідайте цей Край. І пішли ті мужі, і вивідали той Ай.

3 A nd they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither; for they are but few.

І вернулися вони до Ісуса та й сказали до нього: Нехай не йде ввесь народ, коло двох тисяч люда або коло трьох тисяч люда нехай вийдуть, і поб'ють Ай. Не труди всього народу туди, бо ті вороги нечисленні.

4 S o there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

І пішли туди з народу коло трьох тисяч люда, та вони повтікали перед айськими людьми.

5 A nd the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men; and they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

І айські люди повибивали з них коло тридцяти й шости чоловіка, та й гнали їх з-перед брами аж до Шеварім, і розбили їх на узбіччі гори. І охляло серце народу, та й стало як вода.

6 A nd Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.

І роздер Ісус одежу свою, та й упав на обличчя своє на землю перед Господнім ковчегом, і лежав аж до вечора він та Ізраїлеві старші, і посипали порохом свою голову.

7 A nd Joshua said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan!

І сказав Ісус: Ах, Владико Господи, для чого. Ти конче перепровадив цей народ через Йордан, щоб дати нас у руку амореянина, щоб вигубити нас? О, коли б ми були позосталися, і осіли по той бік Йордану!

8 O h, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies!

О, Господи! Що я скажу по тому, як Ізраїль обернув потилицю перед своїми ворогами?

9 F or the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do for thy great name?

І почують ханаанеянин та всі мешканці цього Краю, і зберуться навколо на нас, і знищать ім'я наше з землі. І що Ти зробиш Своєму великому Йменню?

10 A nd Jehovah said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore art thou thus fallen upon thy face?

І сказав Господь до Ісуса: Устань, пощо то ти падаєш на обличчя своє?

11 I srael hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff.

Ізраїль згрішив, і вони переступили Мого заповіта, що Я наказав їм, і взяли з заклятого, а також крали, і обманювали, і клали поміж свої речі.

12 T herefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the devoted thing from among you.

І не зможуть Ізраїлеві сини встояти перед своїми ворогами, вони обернуть спину перед ворогами своїми, бо стали закляттям. Не буду більше з вами, якщо не вигубите заклятого з-поміж себе!

13 U p, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, There is a devoted thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the devoted thing from among you.

Устань, освяти народ та й скажеш: Освятіться на завтра, бо так сказав Господь, Бог Ізраїлів: Закляте серед тебе, Ізраїлю! Ти не зможеш устояти перед своїми ворогами, аж доки ви не викинете з-поміж себе того заклятого.

14 I n the morning therefore ye shall be brought near by your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah taketh shall come near by families; and the family which Jehovah shall take shall come near by households; and the household which Jehovah shall take shall come near man by man.

І підходьте рано вранці за вашими племенами. І станеться, те плем'я, що його виявить Господь, нехай підходить за родами; а рід, що його виявить Господь, підходитиме за домами, а дім, що його виявить Господь, підходитиме за мужчинами.

15 A nd it shall be, that he that is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath; because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

І станеться, хто буде виявлений у заклятім, той буде спалений в огні, він та все, що його, бо переступив він заповіта Господнього, і вчинив безсоромне між Ізраїлем.

16 S o Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

І встав Ісус рано вранці, і привів Ізраїля за його племенами, і було виявлене Юдине плем'я.

17 a nd he brought near the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zerahites: and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

І привів він Юдині роди, і був виявлений рід Зархіїв. І привів він Зархіїв рід за родинами, і був виявлений Завдій.

18 a nd he brought near his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

І привів він його дім за мужчинами, і був виявлений Ахан, син Кармія, сина Завдія, сина Зераха з Юдиного племени.

19 A nd Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to Jehovah, the God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

І сказав Ісус до Ахана: Сину мій, воздай же славу для Господа, Бога Ізраїля, і признайся Йому, і подай мені, що ти зробив? Не скажи неправди передо мною!

20 A nd Achan answered Joshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against Jehovah, the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

І відповів Ахан до Ісуса та й сказав: Дійсно, згрішив я Господеві, Богові Ізраїля, і зробив так та так.

21 w hen I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonish mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

І побачив я в здобичі одного доброго шін'арського плаща, і дві сотні шеклів срібла, і одного золотого зливка, п'ятдесят шеклів вага його, і забажав я їх, і взяв їх. І ось вони сховані в землі в середині намету мого, а срібло під ним.

22 S o Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

І послав Ісус посланців, і побігли вони до намету, аж ось сховане воно в наметі, а срібло під ним.

23 A nd they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel; and they laid them down before Jehovah.

І забрали його з середини намету, і принесли його до Ісуса та до всіх Ізраїлевих синів, і поклали його перед Господнім лицем.

24 A nd Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up unto the valley of Achor.

І взяв Ісус Ахана, Зерахового сина, і те срібло, і того плаща, і того золотого зливка, і синів його, і дочок його, і вола його, і осла його, і отару його, і намета його, і все, що його, а ввесь Ізраїль із ним, та й повиводили їх до долини Ахор.

25 A nd Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.

І сказав Ісус: Нащо ти навів нещастя на нас? Нехай на тебе наведе це нещастя Господь цього дня! І вкаменували його, увесь Ізраїль, камінням. І попалили їх в огні, і вкаменували їх камінням.

26 A nd they raised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day; and Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

І поставили над ним велику камінну могилу, що стоїть аж до цього дня. І спинив Господь лютість гніву Свого, тому назвав ім'я того місця: Ахор, аж до цього дня.
