1 A nd it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

І сталося по тому, мав Авесалом, син Давидів, уродливу сестру, а ім'я їй Тамара. І покохав її Амнон, син Давидів.

2 A nd Amnon was so vexed that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything unto her.

І вболівав Амнон так, що він аж захворів через свою сестру Тамару, бо вона була дівчина, і Амнонові здавалося трудно щось їй зробити.

3 B ut Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man.

А Амнон мав товариша, а ім'я йому Йонадав, син Шім'ї, Давидового брата. І Йонадав був чоловік дуже хитрий.

4 A nd he said unto him, Why, O son of the king, art thou thus lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.

І він сказав йому: Чого ти, царевичу, такий марний щоранку? Чи ж не розповіси мені? І сказав йому Амнон: Я кохаю Тамару, сестру брата свого Авесалома.

5 A nd Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and feign thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, Let my sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and give me bread to eat, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.

І сказав йому Йонадав: Ляж на ложі своєму, і вдавай хворого. А коли прийде твій батько, щоб побачити тебе, то скажи йому: Нехай прийде сестра моя Тамара, і нехай підкріпить мене хлібом, і нехай зробить на моїх очах ту їжу, щоб я бачив та їв із руки її.

6 S o Amnon lay down, and feigned himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, Let her sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.

І поклався Амнон, і вдавав хворого, а цар прийшов побачити його. І сказав Амнон до царя: Нехай прийде сестра моя Тамара, і нехай спече на моїх очах два млинці, і я попоїм з її руки.

7 T hen David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house, and dress him food.

І послав Давид до Тамари, до дому, говорячи: Іди до дому твого брата Амнона, і приготов йому їжу.

8 S o Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and he was laid down. And she took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.

І прийшла Тамара до дому свого брата Амнона, а він лежить. І взяла вона тіста, і замісила, і приготовила на очах його, та й спекла млинці.

9 A nd she took the pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.

І взяла вона сковорідку, і виложила перед ним, та він відмовився їсти. І сказав Амнон: Випровадь від мене всіх людей. І повиходили від нього всі люди.

10 A nd Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from thy hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

І сказав Амнон: Принеси їжу до кімнати, і я з'їм із твоєї руки. І взяла Тамара млинці, що приготовила, та й принесла своєму братові Амнонові до кімнати.

11 A nd when she had brought them near unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come, lie with me, my sister.

І вона принесла до нього, щоб їв, а він схопив її, та й сказав до неї: Ходи, ляж зо мною, моя сестро!...

12 A nd she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.

А вона йому відказала: Ні, брате мій, не безчесть мене, бо не робиться так в Ізраїлі! Не роби цієї гидоти.

13 A nd I, whither shall I carry my shame? and as for thee, thou wilt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

І куди я понесу свою ганьбу? А ти станеш, як один із мерзотників в Ізраїлі. Ти переговори з царем, і він не відмовить віддати мене тобі...

14 H owbeit he would not hearken unto her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.

Та він не хотів слухати її голосу. І був він сильніший від неї, і збезчестив її, і лежав із нею...

15 T hen Amnon hated her with exceeding great hatred; for the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

І по цьому дуже зненавидів її Амнон великою ненавистю, бо ця ненависть, якою він зненавидів її, була більша від любови, якою любив її. І сказав до неї Амнон: Уставай, іди собі...

16 A nd she said unto him, Not so, because this great wrong in putting me forth is worse than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.

А вона відказав йому: Через це велике зло, по тому, що зробив ти зо мною, хочеш ще вигнати мене? Та він не хотів її слухати.

17 T hen he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.

І покликав він юнака свого, слугу свого, та й сказав: Виженіть оцю від мене геть, і замкни за нею двері...

18 A nd she had a garment of divers colors upon her; for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.

А на ній була квітчаста туніка, бо так завжди вбиралися царські дочки, панни. І його слуга випровадив її назовні, і замкнув за нею двері.

19 A nd Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head, and went her way, crying aloud as she went.

А Тамара посипала попелом свою голову, а квітчасту туніку, що була на ній, роздерла, і поклала руку свою на голову свою, і все ходила та голосила...

20 A nd Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but now hold thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; take not this thing to heart. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house.

І сказав до неї брат її Авесалом: Чи брат твій Амнон був із тобою? А тепер, сестро моя, мовчи, брат же твій він! Не бери цієї речі до серця свого... І осіла Тамара, знівечена, у домі брата свого Авесалома.

21 B ut when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.

А цар Давид почув про це все, і сильно розгнівався!

22 A nd Absalom spake unto Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

І не говорив Авесалом з Амноном ні про добре, ні про зле, бо Авесалом зненавидів Амнона за те, що той збезчестив сестру його Тамару.

23 A nd it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king's sons.

І сталося по двох роках, і мав Авесалом стриження овець у Баал-Хацорі, що при Єфремі, і Авесалом закликав усіх царських синів.

24 A nd Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheep-shearers; let the king, I pray thee, and his servants go with thy servant.

І прийшов Авесалом до царя та й сказав: Ось у раба твого стриження, нехай піде цар та раби його з твоїм рабом.

25 A nd the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.

І сказав цар до Авесалома: Ні, сину мій, не підемо ж ми всі, щоб не бути тобі на тяготу. І той сильно просив його, та він не хотів піти, але поблагословив його.

26 T hen said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?

І сказав Авесалом: А як ні, нехай піде з нами брат мій Амнон! І сказав йому цар: Чого від піде з тобою?

27 B ut Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him.

Та Авесалом сильно просив його, і він послав з ним Амнона та всіх царських синів.

28 A nd Absalom commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him; fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

А Авесалом загадав юнакам своїм, говорячи: Дивіться, як Амнон звеселіє на серці від вина, то скажу вам: Ударте Амнона! і ви вб'єте його. Не бійтеся, чи ж не я загадав вам? Будьте міцні та відважні!...

29 A nd the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.

І зробили Авесаломові юнаки Амнонові, як загадав був Авесалом. А царські сини повставали, і сіли верхи кожен на мула свого, та й повтікали.

30 A nd it came to pass, while they were in the way, that the tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left.

І сталося, були вони ще в дорозі, а вістка прийшла до Давида така: Авесалом повбивав усіх царських синів, і не позосталося з них ні одного...

31 T hen the king arose, and rent his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.

І цар устав, і роздер шати свої, та й упав на землю, і всі слуги його стояли при ньому з роздертими шатами.

32 A nd Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men the king's sons; for Amnon only is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

І відповів Йонадав, син Шім'ї, Давидового брата, та й сказав: Нехай не каже мій пан: Усіх юнаків, царських синів, повбивали, бо помер тільки сам Амнон. Бо на наказ Авесалома це було вирішене від дня, як той збезчестив сестру його Тамару.

33 N ow therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king's sons are dead; for Amnon only is dead.

А тепер нехай мій пан цар не кладе на своє серце такого, говорячи: Усі царські сини повмирали, бо помер тільки сам Амнон.

34 B ut Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill-side behind him.

І Авесалом утік. А юнак вартівник звів свої очі й побачив, аж ось численний народ іде дорогою, що була за ним, від боку гори.

35 A nd Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king's sons are come: as thy servant said, so it is.

І сказав Йонадав до царя: Ось прийшли царські сини, як слово раба твого, так сталося.

36 A nd it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voice, and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.

І сталося, як скінчив він говорити, аж ось поприходили царські сини, і піднесли свій голос та й плакали. А також цар та всі слуги його плакали вельми ревним плачем...

37 B ut Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihur, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.

А Авесалом утік, і пішов до Талмая, Амміхурового сина, царя ґешурського. А Давид був у жалобі за сином своїм усі ті дні.

38 S o Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

А Авесалом утік, і пішов до Ґешуру, і пробув там три роки.

39 A nd the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.

І перестав цар Давид гніватися на Авесалома, бо він був зчасом потішений за Амнона, що помер.
