1 A nd he came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek.

І прибув він у Дервію й Лістру. І ото був там один учень, на ім'я Тимофій, син наверненої однієї юдеянки, а батько був геллен.

2 T he same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

Добре свідоцтво про нього давали брати, що були в Лістрі та в Іконії.

3 H im would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Павло захотів його взяти з собою, і, взявши, обрізав його через юдеїв, що були в тих місцях, бо всі знали про батька його, що був геллен.

4 A nd as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem.

Як міста ж переходили, то їм передавали, щоб вони берегли оті постанови, які видали в Єрусалимі апостоли та старші.

5 S o the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.

А Церкви зміцнювалися в вірі, і щоденно зростали кількістю.

6 A nd they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden of the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;

А що Дух Святий їм не звелів провіщати слово в Азії, то вони перейшли через Фрігію та через країну галатську.

7 a nd when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not;

Дійшовши ж до Мізії, хотіли піти до Вітінії, та їм не дозволив Дух Ісусів.

8 a nd passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

Обминувши ж Мізію, прибули до Троади.

9 A nd a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a man of Macedonia standing, beseeching him, and saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

І Павлові з'явилось видіння вночі: якийсь македонянин став перед ним і благав його, кажучи: Прийди в Македонію, і нам поможи!

10 A nd when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Як побачив він це видіння, то ми зараз хотіли піти в Македонію, зрозумівши, що Господь нас покликав звіщати їм Євангелію.

11 S etting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;

Тож відпливши з Троади, прибули ми навпрост у Самотракію, а другого дня до Неаполя,

12 a nd from thence to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the first of the district, a Roman colony: and we were in this city tarrying certain days.

звідтіля ж у Филипи, що є перше місто-осада в тій частині Македонії. І пробули ми в цім місті днів кілька.

13 A nd on the sabbath day we went forth without the gate by a river side, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down, and spake unto the women that were come together.

Дня ж суботнього вийшли ми з міста над річку, де, за звичаєм, було місце молитви, і, посідавши, розмовляли з жінками, що посходились.

14 A nd a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened to give heed unto the things which were spoken by Paul.

Прислухалася й жінка одна, що звалася Лідія, купчиха кармазином з міста Тіятір, що Бога вона шанувала. Господь же їй серце відкрив, щоб уважати на те, що Павло говорив.

15 A nd when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

А коли охристилась вона й її дім, то благала нас, кажучи: Якщо ви признали, що вірна я Господеві, то прийдіть до господи моєї й живіть. І змусила нас.

16 A nd it came to pass, as we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain maid having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.

І сталось, як ми йшли на молитву, то нас перестріла служниця одна, що мала віщунського духа, яка ворожбитством давала великий прибуток панам своїм.

17 T he same following after Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim unto you the way of salvation.

Вона йшла слідкома за Павлом та за нами, і кричала, говорячи: Оці люди це раби Всевишнього Бога, що вам провіщають дорогу спасіння!

18 A nd this she did for many days. But Paul, being sore troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I charge thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.

І багато днів вона це робила. І обуривсь Павло, і, обернувшись, промовив до духа: У Ім'я Ісуса Христа велю я тобі вийди з неї! І того часу той вийшов.

19 B ut when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they laid hold on Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers,

А пани її, бачивши, що пропала надія на їхній прибуток, схопили Павла й Силу, і потягли їх на ринок до старших.

20 a nd when they had brought them unto the magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

Коли ж їх привели до начальників, то сказали: Ці люди, юдеї, наше місто бунтують,

21 a nd set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans.

і навчають звичаїв, яких нам, римлянам, не годиться приймати, ані виконувати.

22 A nd the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.

І натовп піднявся на них. А начальники здерли одежу із них, та звеліли їх різками сікти.

23 A nd when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

І, завдавши багато їм ран, посадили в в'язницю, наказавши в'язничному дозорцеві, щоб їх пильно стеріг.

24 w ho, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

Одержавши такого наказа, той їх повкидав до внутрішньої в'язниці, а їхні ноги забив у колоди.

25 B ut about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

А північної пори Павло й Сила молилися, і Богові співали, а ув'язнені слухали їх.

26 a nd suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

І ось нагло повстало велике трясіння землі, аж основи в'язничні були захиталися! І повідчинялися зараз усі двері, а кайдани з усіх поспадали...

27 A nd the jailor, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

Як прокинувся ж сторож в'язничний, і побачив відчинені двері в'язниці, то витяг меча та й хотів себе вбити, мавши думку, що повтікали ув'язнені.

28 B ut Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

А Павло скрикнув голосом гучним, говорячи: Не чини собі жодного зла, бо всі ми ось тут!

29 A nd he called for lights and sprang in, and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas,

Зажадавши ж той світла, ускочив, і тремтячий припав до Павла та до Сили.

30 a nd brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

І вивів їх звідти й спитав: Добродії! Що треба робити мені, щоб спастися?

31 A nd they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.

А вони відказали: Віруй в Господа Ісуса, і будеш спасений ти сам та твій дім.

32 A nd they spake the word of the Lord unto him, with all that were in his house.

І Слово Господнє звіщали йому та й усім, хто був у домі його.

33 A nd he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, immediately.

І сторож забрав їх того ж часу вночі, їхні рани обмив, і охристився негайно він сам та його всі домашні.

34 A nd he brought them up into his house, and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, with all his house, having believed in God.

І він їх запровадив до дому свого, і поживу поставив, і радів із усім домом своїм, що ввірував у Бога.

35 B ut when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, Let those men go.

А коли настав день, то прислали начальники слуг поліційних, наказуючи: Відпусти тих людей!

36 A nd the jailor reported the words to Paul, saying, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.

І сказав той в'язничний дозорець слова ці Павлові: що прислали начальники, щоб вас відпустити. Отож, вийдіть тепер та й з миром ідіть!

37 B ut Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? Nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.

А Павло відказав їм: Нас, римлян, незасуджених, різками сікли прилюдно, і до в'язниці всадили, а тепер нас таємно виводять? Але ні! Хай вони самі прийдуть, та й виведуть нас!

38 A nd the sergeants reported these words unto the magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans;

Ці ж слова поліційні слуги донесли начальникам. А ті налякались, почувши, що римляни вони.

39 a nd they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city.

І прийшли, та їх перепросили, а вивівши, благали, щоб із міста пішли.

40 A nd they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

І, вийшовши з в'язниці, прибули вони до Лідії, а з братами побачившись, потішили їх та й пішли.
