1 A nd he came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek.

Pavel a venit în Derbe şi apoi în Listra. Şi iată că acolo era un ucenic pe nume Timotei, fiul unei iudeice credincioase, dar al cărui tată era grec.

2 T he same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

El era vorbit de bine de fraţii din Listra şi din Iconia.

3 H im would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Pavel a vrut să-l ia cu el în călătorie, aşa că, după ce l-a luat, l-a circumcis, din pricina iudeilor care erau în acele locuri. Căci toţi ştiau că tatăl lui era grec.

4 A nd as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem.

În timp ce treceau prin cetăţi, ei îi îndemnau pe fraţi să păzească hotărârile care fuseseră luate de apostolii şi bătrânii din Ierusalim.

5 S o the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Bisericile se întăreau în credinţă şi creşteau la număr în fiecare zi. Viziunea lui Pavel în care apare bărbatul macedonean

6 A nd they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden of the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;

Fiindcă au fost opriţi de Duhul Sfânt să predice Cuvântul în Asia, au trecut prin ţinutul Frigiei şi al Galatiei.

7 a nd when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not;

Când au ajuns lângă Misia, au încercat să se ducă în Bitinia, dar Duhul lui Isus nu le-a dat voie.

8 a nd passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

Au trecut deci prin Misia şi s-au dus în Troa.

9 A nd a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a man of Macedonia standing, beseeching him, and saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

În timpul nopţii, Pavel a văzut o viziune: un macedonean stătea în picioare şi-l ruga: „Treci în Macedonia şi ajută-ne!“

10 A nd when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

După ce Pavel a văzut viziunea, am căutat imediat să ne ducem în Macedonia, ajungând la concluzia că Dumnezeu ne-a chemat să le vestim Evanghelia. În Filipi

11 S etting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;

Am pornit pe mare din Troa şi ne-am îndreptat direct spre Samotracia. În ziua următoare am plecat spre Neapolis,

12 a nd from thence to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the first of the district, a Roman colony: and we were in this city tarrying certain days.

iar de acolo spre Filipi, care este cea dintâi cetate dintr-o regiune a Macedoniei, o colonie. În cetatea aceasta am rămas câteva zile.

13 A nd on the sabbath day we went forth without the gate by a river side, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down, and spake unto the women that were come together.

În ziua de Sabat am ieşit dincolo de poarta cetăţii, lângă un râu, unde credeam că se află un loc de rugăciune. Ne-am aşezat şi le-am vorbit femeilor care se adunaseră acolo.

14 A nd a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened to give heed unto the things which were spoken by Paul.

O femeie pe nume Lidia, vânzătoare de purpură în cetatea Tiatira, care era temătoare de Dumnezeu, stătea şi ea acolo şi asculta. Domnul i-a deschis inima ca să ia aminte la cele spuse de Pavel.

15 A nd when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

După ce ea şi casa ei au fost botezaţi, Lidia ne-a rugat zicând: „Dacă consideraţi că sunt credincioasă Domnului, veniţi şi rămâneţi în casa mea!“ Şi ne-a înduplecat. Pavel şi Silas în închisoare

16 A nd it came to pass, as we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain maid having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.

Într-o zi, în timp ce ne duceam spre locul de rugăciune, ne-a întâlnit o sclavă care avea în ea un duh de divinaţie şi care, prin ghicire, aducea mult câştig stăpânilor ei.

17 T he same following after Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim unto you the way of salvation.

Ea se ţinea după Pavel şi după noi şi striga: „Aceşti oameni sunt robi ai Dumnezeului celui Preaînalt şi ei vă vestesc Calea mântuirii!“

18 A nd this she did for many days. But Paul, being sore troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I charge thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.

Aşa a făcut ea timp de mai multe zile. Atunci Pavel, supărat, s-a întors şi i-a zis duhului: „Îţi poruncesc în Numele lui Isus Cristos să ieşi din ea!“ Şi a ieşit chiar în ceasul acela.

19 B ut when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they laid hold on Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers,

Când stăpânii ei au văzut că speranţa lor de câştig s-a dus, i-au apucat pe Pavel şi pe Silas şi i-au târât în piaţa publică, înaintea autorităţilor.

20 a nd when they had brought them unto the magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

I-au adus înaintea magistraţilor şi au zis: „Oamenii aceştia ne tulbură cetatea! Sunt iudei

21 a nd set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans.

şi vestesc nişte obiceiuri pe care nouă, romanilor, nu ne este permis nici să le primim, nici să le practicăm!“

22 A nd the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.

Mulţimea s-a ridicat şi ea împotriva lor, iar magistraţii le-au sfâşiat hainele şi au poruncit să fie bătuţi cu nuiele.

23 A nd when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

După ce le-au dat multe lovituri, i-au aruncat în închisoare, poruncind temnicerului să-i păzească bine.

24 w ho, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

Primind un astfel de ordin, temnicerul i-a aruncat în celula cea mai lăuntrică şi le-a băgat picioarele în butuci.

25 B ut about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

Pe la miezul nopţii, Pavel şi Silas se rugau şi-I cântau laudă lui Dumnezeu, iar deţinuţii îi ascultau.

26 a nd suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

Deodată a avut loc un cutremur atât de mare, încât s-au clătinat temeliile închisorii. Toate uşile s-au deschis dintr-odată şi fiecăruia i s-au dezlegat lanţurile.

27 A nd the jailor, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

Temnicerul s-a trezit şi, când a văzut că uşile închisorii erau deschise, şi-a scos sabia ca să se omoare, crezând că deţinuţii au fugit.

28 B ut Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

Pavel însă a strigat cu glas tare: – Să nu-ţi faci nici un rău, căci toţi suntem aici!

29 A nd he called for lights and sprang in, and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas,

Atunci temnicerul a cerut o făclie, s-a repezit înăuntru şi a căzut tremurând înaintea lui Pavel şi a lui Silas.

30 a nd brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

Apoi, conducându-i afară, a zis: – Domnilor, ce trebuie să fac ca să fiu mântuit?

31 A nd they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.

Ei i-au răspuns: – Crede în Domnul Isus şi vei fi mântuit, tu şi casa ta!

32 A nd they spake the word of the Lord unto him, with all that were in his house.

Şi i-au predicat Cuvântul Domnului atât lui, cât şi tuturor celor din casa lui.

33 A nd he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, immediately.

Chiar în ceasul acela din noapte, temnicerul i-a luat şi le-a spălat rănile; apoi, imediat, el şi toţi ai lui au fost botezaţi.

34 A nd he brought them up into his house, and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, with all his house, having believed in God.

După aceea i-a dus acasă la el şi le-a pus masa; şi s-a bucurat nespus cu toţi cei din casa lui pentru că a crezut în Dumnezeu.

35 B ut when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying, Let those men go.

Când s-a făcut zi, magistraţii i-au trimis pe ofiţeri să -i spună temnicerului: „Eliberează-i pe oamenii aceia!“

36 A nd the jailor reported the words to Paul, saying, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.

Temnicerul i-a spus lui Pavel următoarele cuvinte: – Magistraţii au trimis ordin să fiţi eliberaţi! Acum deci ieşiţi şi duceţi-vă în pace!

37 B ut Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? Nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.

Însă Pavel le-a zis ofiţerilor: – Ne-au bătut în public, fără să fim judecaţi, pe noi care suntem cetăţeni romani, ne-au aruncat în închisoare, iar acum vor să ne scoată afară pe ascuns?! În nici un caz! Să vină ei înşişi să ne ducă afară!

38 A nd the sergeants reported these words unto the magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans;

Ofiţerii au spus aceste cuvinte magistraţilor. Aceştia s-au temut când au auzit că ei erau cetăţeni romani

39 a nd they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city.

şi au venit să-i liniştească. I-au condus afară şi i-au rugat să plece din cetate.

40 A nd they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

Au ieşit din închisoare şi s-au dus la Lidia, iar după ce i-au văzut şi i-au încurajat pe fraţi, au plecat.
