1 N ow when these things were done, the princes drew near unto me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

După ce s-au isprăvit toate acestea, căpeteniile s-au apropiat de mine, zicându-mi: „Poporul lui Israel, inclusiv preoţii şi leviţii, nu s-au separat de popoarele ţărilor dimprejur, ci s-au dedat la necurăţiile canaaniţilor, hitiţilor, periziţilor, iebusiţilor, amoniţilor, moabiţilor, egiptenilor şi amoriţilor.

2 F or they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the peoples of the lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.

Ei şi-au luat soţii dintre fetele acestora, atât pentru ei, cât şi pentru fiii lor. Neamul cel sfânt s-a amestecat astfel cu popoarele ţărilor dimprejur, iar cei dintâi care au fost necredincioşi au fost chiar căpeteniile şi dregătorii.“

3 A nd when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my robe, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

Când am auzit vestea aceasta, mi-am sfâşiat hainele şi mantaua. Mi-am smuls păr din cap şi din barbă şi m-am lăsat jos înmărmurit.

4 T hen were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the trespass of them of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening oblation.

S-au strâns la mine toţi aceia care tremurau de frică la auzul cuvintelor Dumnezeului lui Israel cu privire la necredincioşia celor ce fuseseră în captivitate. Am rămas aşa îngrozit până la jertfa de seară.

5 A nd at the evening oblation I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe rent; and I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto Jehovah my God;

Apoi, la jertfa de seară, m-am ridicat din starea mea smerită, cu hainele şi cu mantaua sfâşiate, m-am plecat pe genunchi şi, întinzând mâinile spre Domnul, Dumnezeul meu,

6 a nd I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God; for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto the heavens.

am zis: „Dumnezeul meu, sunt umilit şi mi-e ruşine, Dumnezeul meu, să-mi ridic faţa spre Tine! Căci fărădelegile noastre au ajuns deasupra capetelor noastre şi vina noastră a crescut până la ceruri.

7 S ince the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

Din vremea strămoşilor noştri şi până în ziua de astăzi am fost foarte vinovaţi şi, din cauza fărădelegilor noastre, noi, regii noştri şi preoţii noştri am fost daţi pe mâna împăraţilor străini, a sabiei, a sclaviei, a jafului şi a ruşinii, aşa cum se vede şi astăzi.

8 A nd now for a little moment grace hath been showed from Jehovah our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

Acum, pentru puţină vreme, am avut iarăşi parte de bunăvoinţa Domnului, Dumnezeul nostru, Care ne-a lăsat o rămăşiţă şi ne-a dat un adăpost în Locul Său cel Sfânt, pentru ca Dumnezeul nostru să reaprindă lumina ochilor noştri şi să ne aducă puţină înviorare în sclavia noastră.

9 F or we are bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended lovingkindness unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the ruins thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

Deşi suntem sclavi, Dumnezeul nostru nu ne-a părăsit în sclavia noastră, ci Şi-a arătat îndurarea faţă de noi înaintea împăraţilor Persiei şi astfel ei ne-au dat putere de viaţă ca să putem înălţa Casa Dumnezeului nostru, să o ridicăm din ruine şi să avem astfel un zid de apărare în Iuda şi în Ierusalim.

10 A nd now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,

Dumnezeul nostru, ce să mai zicem acum, după toate cele întâmplate? Căci am părăsit poruncile Tale,

11 w hich thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness:

pe care le-ai poruncit prin robii Tăi, profeţii, spunând: «Ţara în care veţi intra ca să o luaţi în stăpânire este o ţară stricată din cauza tuturor practicilor hidoase ale popoarelor străine. Au umplut ţara de practicile lor hidoase şi de necurăţiile lor de la un capăt la celălalt!

12 n ow therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity for ever; that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.

Să nu vă daţi fetele fiilor lor şi nici să nu le luaţi fetele pentru fiii voştri! Să nu umblaţi niciodată după fericirea sau bunăstarea lor, ca astfel să vă întăriţi şi să ajungeţi să mâncaţi bunătăţile ţării şi să le lăsaţi de moştenire pentru totdeauna fiilor voştri!»

13 A nd after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such a remnant,

După toate câte au venit asupra noastră din cauza faptelor noastre rele şi a vinii noastre cea mare, cu toate că Tu, Dumnezeul nostru, ne-ai pedepsit mai puţin decât am fi meritat în urma fărădelegilor noastre şi ne-ai lăsat rămăşiţa aceasta,

14 s hall we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?

să încălcăm iarăşi poruncile Tale şi să ne înrudim cu popoarele care se ocupă cu astfel de practici hidoase? Nu te-ai mânia iarăşi pe noi, până acolo încât ne-ai nimici fără să ne mai laşi vreo rămăşiţă sau vreun supravieţuitor?

15 O Jehovah, the God of Israel, thou art righteous; for we are left a remnant that is escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our guiltiness; for none can stand before thee because of this.

Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Tu eşti drept, căci totuşi ne-ai scăpat o rămăşiţă, aşa cum se vede astăzi. Iată-ne acum stând vinovaţi înaintea Ta, deşi ştim că din această cauză nu suntem vrednici să stăm înaintea Ta.“
