1 N ow Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

Ioram, fiul lui Ahab, a început să domnească peste Israel, în Samaria, în al optsprezecelea an al domniei lui Iehoşafat, regele lui Iuda, şi a domnit timp de doisprezece ani.

2 A nd he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.

El a făcut ce este rău înaintea Domnului, totuşi nu cum făcuse tatăl său şi mama sa, căci a îndepărtat stâlpul sacru al lui Baal, pe care-l făcuse tatăl său.

3 N evertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

El însă a săvârşit păcatele lui Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, cel care l-a făcut pe Israel să păcătuiască, şi nu s-a depărtat de ele.

4 N ow Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams.

Meşa, regele Moabului, era crescător de oi şi era nevoit să dea regelui lui Israel o sută de mii de miei şi o sută de mii de berbeci cu tot cu lâna lor.

5 B ut it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

Însă, după moartea lui Ahab, regele Moabului s-a răsculat împotriva regelui lui Israel.

6 A nd king Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.

Regele Ioram a ieşit atunci din Samaria şi a numărat întregul Israel.

7 A nd he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.

Pe urmă a trimis un mesaj lui Iehoşafat, regele lui Iuda, zicând: – Regele Moabului s-a răsculat împotriva mea. Vrei să vii cu mine să luptăm împotriva Moabului? – Vin, a răspuns el. Eu şi cu tine vom fi una, poporul meu ca poporul tău şi caii mei ca ai tăi.

8 A nd he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way of the wilderness of Edom.

Pe ce drum vom merge? a întrebat el. – Pe drumul prin pustia Edomului, a răspuns Ioram.

9 S o the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them.

Regele Israelului, regele lui Iuda şi regele Edomului au plecat. Dar după ce au înaintat, ocolind timp de şapte zile, n-a mai fost apă pentru oştire şi animale.

10 A nd the king of Israel said, Alas! for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

Atunci regele Israelului a zis: – Ah! Domnul i-a chemat pe aceşti trei regi ca să-i dea în mâinile Moabului?

11 B ut Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, that we may inquire of Jehovah by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.

Dar Iehoşafat a zis: – Nu este aici nici un profet al Domnului prin care să-L întrebăm pe Domnul ? Atunci unul dintre slujitorii regelui lui Israel a răspuns: – Este aici Elisei, fiul lui Şafat, care obişnuia să toarne apă pe mâinile lui Ilie.

12 A nd Jehoshaphat said, The word of Jehovah is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

Iehoşafat a zis: – Cuvântul Domnului este cu el! Atunci regele lui Israel, Iehoşafat şi regele Edomului s-au dus la el.

13 A nd Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay; for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

Elisei i-a zis regelui lui Israel: – Ce am eu de-a face cu tine? Du-te la profeţii tatălui tău şi la profeţii mamei tale! – Nu! a răspuns regele Israelului, căci Domnul a chemat pe aceşti trei regi ca să-i dea în mâinile Moabului.

14 A nd Elisha said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.

Elisei a zis: – Viu este Domnul Oştirilor, al Cărui slujitor sunt, că, dacă n-aş avea în vedere pe Iehoşafat, regele lui Iuda, pe tine nici nu te-aş băga în seamă şi nici nu m-aş uita la tine.

15 B ut now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Jehovah came upon him.

Acum aduceţi-mi un cântăreţ cu o harfă. În timp ce cântăreţul cânta, mâna Domnului a coborât peste Elisei

16 A nd he said, Thus saith Jehovah, Make this valley full of trenches.

şi el a zis: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Faceţi în această vale groapă lângă groapă,

17 F or thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts.

pentru că – aşa vorbeşte Domnul – deşi nu veţi vedea vânt sau ploaie, valea se va umple cu apă şi veţi bea atât voi, cât şi vitele şi animalele voastre.

18 A nd this is but a light thing in the sight of Jehovah: he will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.

Însă acesta este doar un lucru mărunt pentru Domnul, astfel că El va da şi pe Moab în mâinile voastre.

19 A nd ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

Voi veţi nimici toate cetăţile întărite şi toate cetăţile alese, veţi tăia fiecare copac bun, veţi astupa izvoarele de apă şi veţi strica cu pietre fiecare ogor bun.»“

20 A nd it came to pass in the morning, about the time of offering the oblation, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

În dimineaţa următoare, în timp ce se aducea jertfa, a început să vină dintr-odată apă de pe drumul dinspre Edom, şi pământul s-a umplut de apă.

21 N ow when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border.

Atunci toţi moabiţii, când au auzit că regii vin să lupte împotriva lor, i-au chemat pe toţi aceia care erau în stare să poarte armele, tineri şi bătrâni, şi au stat la hotar.

22 A nd they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood:

Când s-au trezit dis-de-dimineaţă, soarele strălucea deasupra apelor şi moabiţii au văzut în faţa lor apele roşii ca sângele.

23 a nd they said, This is blood; the kings are surely destroyed, and they have smitten each man his fellow: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.

„Acesta este sânge!“ au zis ei. „Regii s-au luptat între ei şi s-au omorât unii pe alţii! Acum, la pradă, Moab!“

24 A nd when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites.

Dar când au intrat în tabăra lui Israel, israeliţii s-au ridicat şi i-au bătut pe moabiţi până când aceştia au fugit dinaintea lor. Apoi au pătruns în ţară şi i-au ucis pe moabiţi.

25 A nd they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir-hareseth only they left the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.

Le-au distrus cetăţile şi toţi bărbaţii au aruncat pietre în toate ogoarele, umplându-le astfel cu pietre. Au astupat toate izvoarele de apă şi au tăiat toţi copacii buni. Mai rămăseseră doar zidurile cetăţii Chir-Hareset, însă prăştiaşii au înconjurat-o şi au cucerit-o.

26 A nd when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not.

Când regele Moabului a văzut că a fost învins în luptă, a luat cu el şapte sute de oameni care luptau cu sabia, cu gând să-şi croiască drum până la regele Edomului, dar n-au putut.

27 T hen he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

Atunci a luat pe întâiul său născut, care urma să fie rege în locul lui şi l-a adus ca ardere de tot pe zidul cetăţii. O mare indignare l-a cuprins pe Israel. Drept urmare Israel s-a retras din Moab, întorcându-se acasă.
