1 T he word which came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,

Cuvântul care a venit la Ieremia din partea Domnului, atunci când regele Zedechia l-a trimis la el pe Paşhur, fiul lui Malchia, şi pe preotul Ţefania, fiul lui Maaseia, ca să-i zică:

2 I nquire, I pray thee, of Jehovah for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us: peradventure Jehovah will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

„Întreabă-L pe Domnul pentru noi, căci Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului, a pornit la război împotriva noastră. Poate că Domnul va face pentru noi vreuna din minunile Sale, ca astfel acesta să se depărteze de la noi.“

3 T hen said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah:

Ieremia le-a răspuns: „Spuneţi-i lui Zedechia

4 T hus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans that besiege you, without the walls; and I will gather them into the midst of this city.

că aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Iată, voi întoarce împotriva voastră armele de război care sunt în mâinile voastre şi pe care le folosiţi ca să luptaţi împotriva împăratului Babilonului şi a caldeenilor care vă asediază de dincolo de ziduri. Eu îi voi strânge în mijlocul cetăţii acesteia.

5 A nd I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation.

Eu Însumi voi lupta împotriva voastră cu mână întinsă şi cu braţ tare, cu mânie, cu furie şi cu o mare înverşunare.

6 A nd I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence.

Îi voi lovi pe locuitorii acestei cetăţi – atât pe oameni, cât şi pe animale – şi vor muri de o molimă cumplită.

7 A nd afterward, saith Jehovah, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, even such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

După aceea, zice Domnul, voi da pe Zedechia, regele lui Iuda, precum şi pe slujitorii lui, pe popor, pe toţi cei din cetatea aceasta, care vor scăpa de molimă, de sabie şi de foamete, îi voi da în mâinile lui Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului, în mâinile duşmanilor lor, în mâinile celor ce caută să le ia viaţa. Nebucadneţar îi va trece prin ascuţişul sabiei, nu-i va cruţa, nu-i va fi milă şi nu se va îndura de ei.»

8 A nd unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

Iar poporului acestuia să-i spui că aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Iată, pun înaintea voastră calea vieţii şi calea morţii.

9 H e that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth out, and passeth over to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.

Cine va rămâne în cetatea aceasta va muri ucis de sabie, de foamete sau de molimă; dar cine va ieşi să se predea caldeenilor care vă asediază, va trăi şi viaţa lui îi va fi singura pradă.

10 F or I have set my face upon this city for evil, and not for good, saith Jehovah: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

Căci Eu Mi-am îndreptat faţa împotriva cetăţii acesteia, ca să-i fac rău, nu bine, zice Domnul, şi de aceea ea va fi dată în mâinile împăratului Babilonului, care îi va da foc.» Mesaj către dinastia lui David

11 A nd touching the house of the king of Judah, hear ye the word of Jehovah:

De asemenea, Casei regelui lui Iuda să-i spui astfel: «Ascultaţi Cuvântul Domnului!

12 O house of David, thus saith Jehovah, Execute justice in the morning, and deliver him that is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

Casă a lui David, aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Faceţi dreptate în fiecare dimineaţă! Eliberaţi-l pe cel ce a fost jecmănit din mâinile asupritorului! Altfel, mânia Mea va izbucni ca un foc şi va arde fără să mai poată fi stinsă, din cauza răutăţii faptelor voastre.

13 B ehold, I am against thee, O inhabitant of the valley, and of the rock of the plain, saith Jehovah; you that say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

Iată, sunt împotriva ta, cetate aşezată în vale, stâncă a podişului, zice Domnul. Pe voi, care spuneţi: ‘Cine poate veni împotriva noastră? Cine poate intra în adăposturile noastre?’,

14 A nd I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith Jehovah; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is round about her.

vă voi pedepsi după rodul faptelor voastre, zice Domnul; voi aprinde un foc în pădurea voastră, care îi va arde toate împrejurimile.’»“
