1 I t pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom;

Darius a găsit cu cale să numească peste împărăţia sa o sută douăzeci de satrapi, care să fie răspândiţi în toată împărăţia,

2 a nd over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one; that these satraps might give account unto them, and that the king should have no damage.

iar peste ei a pus trei supraveghetori, între care era şi Daniel. Satrapii erau datori să le dea socoteală acestor trei, astfel încât împăratul să nu sufere vreo pagubă.

3 T hen this Daniel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

Daniel însă era mai distins decât toţi supraveghetorii şi satrapii, deoarece în el era un duh deosebit, iar împăratul se gândea să-i dea autoritate peste toată împărăţia.

4 T hen the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault, forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.

Atunci supraveghetorii şi satrapii au plănuit să găsească o pricină împotriva lui Daniel în privinţa treburilor împărăţiei, dar nu au putut să găsească nici o pricină şi nici o greşeală, deoarece era om de încredere şi nu se putea găsi în el vreo neglijenţă sau vreo greşeală.

5 T hen said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

Oamenii aceia au zis: „Nu găsim în acest Daniel nici o pricină, numai dacă nu am găsi ceva în privinţa Legii Dumnezeului său!“

6 T hen these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.

Atunci supraveghetorii şi satrapii aceştia s-au dus cu mare zarvă la împărat şi i-au vorbit astfel: „Să trăieşti veşnic, împărate Darius!

7 A ll the presidents of the kingdom, the deputies and the satraps, the counsellors and the governors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a strong interdict, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

Toţi supraveghetorii împărăţiei, demnitarii, satrapii, sfetnicii şi guvernatorii au căzut de acord să se dea un decret împărătesc, întărit printr-o interdicţie, ca oricine se va ruga, în următoarele treizeci de zile, altui zeu sau altui om decât ţie, împărate, să fie aruncat în groapa cu lei.

8 N ow, O king, establish the interdict, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.

Acum, împărate, întăreşte interdicţia şi semnează decretul pentru ca nimeni să nu-l poată schimba, după legea mezilor şi perşilor, care, odată ce a fost dată, nu mai poate fi anulată.“

9 W herefore king Darius signed the writing and the interdict.

În urma celor spuse, împăratul Darius a semnat decretul şi interdicţia.

10 A nd when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his chamber toward Jerusalem) and he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

Deşi ştia că s-a semnat decretul, Daniel continua să meargă în casa lui, care avea ferestrele de sus deschise înspre Ierusalim şi, de trei ori pe zi, se punea pe genunchi, se ruga şi Îl lăuda pe Dumnezeul său, aşa cum făcuse şi mai înainte.

11 T hen these men assembled together, and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his God.

Atunci oamenii aceia au dat năvală în casă şi l-au găsit pe Daniel rugându-se şi cerând milă de la Dumnezeul său.

12 T hen they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's interdict: Hast thou not signed an interdict, that every man that shall make petition unto any god or man within thirty days, save unto thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.

Apoi s-au înfăţişat înaintea împăratului şi i-au amintit de interdicţia împărătească: – Oare nu ai semnat o interdicţie potrivit căreia, în următoarele treizeci de zile, oricine se roagă altui zeu sau altui om în afară de tine să fie aruncat în groapa cu lei? Împăratul a răspuns: – Lucrul acesta este adevărat, după legea mezilor şi a perşilor, care odată ce a fost dată, nu mai poate fi anulată.

13 T hen answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the interdict that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

Ei i-au mai zis împăratului: – Daniel, unul dintre exilaţii lui Iuda, nu ţine seama deloc la tine, împărate, şi nici la interdicţia pe care ai semnat-o şi îşi spune rugăciunea de trei ori pe zi.

14 T hen the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he labored till the going down of the sun to rescue him.

Când a auzit lucrul acesta, împăratul s-a mâhnit foarte tare şi s-a gândit cum să-l scape pe Daniel; până la apusul soarelui s-a frământat cum să-l scape.

15 T hen these men assembled together unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians, that no interdict nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.

Apoi oamenii aceia au venit cu mare zarvă la împărat şi i-au zis: – Să ştii, împărate, că, după legea mezilor şi a perşilor, orice interdicţie şi orice decret dat de împărat nu se poate anula!

16 T hen the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

Atunci împăratul a poruncit să-l aducă pe Daniel şi să-l arunce în groapa cu lei. Împăratul i-a zis lui Daniel: „Dumnezeul tău, Căruia Îi slujeşti neîncetat, să te scape!“

17 A nd a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.

A fost adusă o piatră care a fost pusă pe gura gropii, iar împăratul a pecetluit-o cu inelul său şi cu inelul nobililor săi, ca să nu se schimbe nimic cu privire la Daniel.

18 T hen the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.

Apoi împăratul s-a retras în palatul său şi a petrecut noaptea fără să mănânce şi fără să i se aducă vreo dansatoare; nu a avut deloc somn.

19 T hen the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

La revărsatul zorilor, împăratul s-a sculat şi s-a dus în grabă la groapa cu lei.

20 A nd when he came near unto the den to Daniel, he cried with a lamentable voice; the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?

S-a apropiat de groapă şi l-a strigat pe Daniel cu durere în glas. Împăratul i-a zis astfel lui Daniel: – Daniele, rob al Dumnezeului celui Viu, a putut Dumnezeul tău, Căruia Îi slujeşti neîncetat, să te scape de lei?

21 T hen said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.

Daniel i-a răspuns împăratului: – Să trăieşti veşnic, împărate!

22 M y God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

Dumnezeul meu l-a trimis pe îngerul Său care a închis gura leilor, iar aceştia nu mi-au făcut nici un rău, pentru că am fost găsit nevinovat înaintea Lui. Şi nici împotriva ta, împărate, nu am făcut nimic rău!

23 T hen was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he had trusted in his God.

Atunci împăratul s-a bucurat mult din pricina lui Daniel şi a poruncit să-l scoată din groapă. Daniel a fost scos din groapă şi nu s-a găsit nici o rană pe el, pentru că s-a încrezut în Dumnezeul său.

24 A nd the king commanded, and they brought those men that had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.

Împăratul a poruncit să fie aduşi înaintea sa oamenii care-l acuzaseră pe Daniel. Aceştia au fost aruncaţi apoi în groapa cu lei, atât ei, cât şi fiii şi soţiile lor. Nici nu au ajuns bine pe fundul gropii, că leii i-au şi apucat şi le-au sfărâmat toate oasele.

25 T hen king Darius wrote unto all the peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you.

După aceea, împăratul Darius a scris tuturor popoarelor, neamurilor şi oamenilor de orice limbă care locuiau pe tot cuprinsul ţării: „Pacea să vă fie înmulţită!

26 I make a decree, that in all the dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, And his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed; and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

Poruncesc ca în orice parte a împărăţiei mele oamenii să tremure şi să se teamă de Dumnezeul lui Daniel. Căci El este Dumnezeul cel Viu, Care dăinuie în veci! Împărăţia Lui nu va fi nimicită niciodată, iar stăpânirea Lui nu va avea sfârşit.

27 H e delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

El izbăveşte şi mântuieşte. El face semne şi minuni în ceruri şi pe pământ, El l-a izbăvit pe Daniel din ghearele leilor.“

28 S o this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Daniel a dus-o bine sub domnia lui Darius şi a lui Cirus Persanul.
