1 W hen thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them; for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Când veţi merge la război împotriva duşmanilor voştri şi veţi vedea cai şi care şi o oştire mai numeroasă decât a voastră, să nu vă temeţi de ei, pentru că Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, Care v-a scos din ţara Egiptului, va fi cu voi.

2 A nd it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

Când se va apropia momentul începerii războiului, să vină preotul şi să vorbească poporului

3 a nd shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; fear not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them;

astfel: «Ascultă, Israele! Astăzi porniţi la război împotriva duşmanilor voştri. Să nu vi se înmoaie inima, să nu vă fie teamă, să nu vă înspăimântaţi şi să nu tremuraţi înaintea lor,

4 f or Jehovah your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

fiindcă Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, va merge cu voi ca să se lupte pentru voi împotriva duşmanilor voştri şi să vă dea izbândă!»

5 A nd the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

Dregătorii să vorbească astfel către popor: «Cine şi-a construit o casă nouă şi nu a locuit încă în ea? Să se întoarcă de îndată acasă, ca să nu moară în luptă şi să locuiască alt om în ea.

6 A nd what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof.

Cine a plantat o vie şi nu s-a bucurat încă de ea? Să se întoarcă de îndată acasă, ca să nu fie ucis în luptă şi un alt om să se bucure de ea.

7 A nd what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

Cine s-a logodit cu o femeie şi nu s-a căsătorit încă cu ea? Să se întoarcă de îndată acasă, ca să nu fie omorât în luptă şi un altul să se căsătorească cu ea.»

8 A nd the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart melt as his heart.

După aceea, dregătorii să vorbească mai departe poporului: «Cine este fricos sau slab la inimă? Să plece şi să se întoarcă acasă, ca să nu înmoaie inima celor din poporul lui.»

9 A nd it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.

După ce dregătorii au terminat de vorbit poporului, să numească conducători în fruntea oştirii.

10 W hen thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

Când vă veţi apropia de o cetate, ca să luptaţi împotriva ei, s-o îndemnaţi la pace.

11 A nd it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that are found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee.

Dacă vă vor accepta pacea şi vă vor deschide porţile, atunci tot poporul care se află în ea va trebui să presteze pentru voi muncă forţată şi să vă slujească.

12 A nd if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

Dacă nu vor dori să facă pace cu voi, ci vor dori să se lupte împotriva voastră, atunci să asediaţi cetatea.

13 a nd when Jehovah thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

Când Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-o va da în mâini, să treceţi prin ascuţişul sabiei pe toţi bărbaţii din ea.

14 b ut the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which Jehovah thy God hath given thee.

Dar femeile, copiii, animalele şi tot ceea ce există în cetate să le luaţi ca pradă, apoi să mâncaţi prada luată de la duşmanii voştri, pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, v-a dat-o.

15 T hus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

Aşa să faceţi cu toate cetăţile care sunt la distanţă mare de voi şi care nu aparţin neamurilor din apropierea voastră.

16 B ut of the cities of these peoples, that Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth;

Dar în cetăţile acestor neamuri, pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, vi le dă ca moştenire, să nu lăsaţi nimic în viaţă.

17 b ut thou shalt utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee;

Să-i nimiciţi cu totul pe hitiţi, pe amoriţi, pe canaaniţi, pe periziţi, pe hiviţi şi pe iebusiţi, după cum v-a poruncit Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru,

18 t hat they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so would ye sin against Jehovah your God.

ca nu cumva să vă înveţe şi pe voi să faceţi toate urâciunile pe care ei le fac pentru zeii lor şi să păcătuiţi astfel împotriva Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru.

19 W hen thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee?

Când veţi asedia o cetate timp de mai multe zile, fiind în război cu ea pentru a o cuceri, să nu distrugeţi pomii fructiferi, tăindu-i cu securea. Să mâncaţi din ei şi să nu-i tăiaţi, căci pomul de pe pământ nu este un om ca să-l asediaţi.

20 O nly the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.

Doar copacii care nu fac roade bune de mâncat vor putea fi distruşi sau tăiaţi, ca să puteţi construi fortificaţii împotriva cetăţii care este în război cu voi, până va fi cucerită.
