1 A nd it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.

Când Saul s-a întors de la urmărirea filistenilor a fost înştiinţat că David se află în pustia En-Ghedi.

2 T hen Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

Atunci Saul a luat din tot Israelul trei mii de bărbaţi aleşi şi a plecat în căutarea lui David şi a oamenilor săi, la răsărit de Stâncile Ţapilor Sălbatici.

3 A nd he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave.

A ajuns la stânile de oi, care se aflau lângă drum; acolo se afla o peşteră, iar Saul a intrat în ea să-şi acopere picioarele. David şi oamenii lui se aflau la capătul peşterii.

4 A nd the men of David said unto him, Behold, the day of which Jehovah said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, and thou shalt do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

Oamenii lui David i-au zis: – Aceasta este ziua despre care ţi-a spus Domnul: „Eu îl voi da pe duşmanul tău în mâinile tale, iar tu îi vei face ce-ţi va plăcea.“ David s-a ridicat şi a tăiat pe furiş colţul mantiei lui Saul.

5 A nd it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

După aceea însă pe David l-a mustrat cugetul pentru că tăiase colţul mantiei lui Saul.

6 A nd he said unto his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing unto my lord, Jehovah's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is Jehovah's anointed.

El le-a spus oamenilor săi: – Să mă ferească Domnul să fac un asemenea lucru stăpânului meu, care este unsul Domnului, şi anume să îmi ridic mâna asupra lui. Doar este unsul Domnului!

7 S o David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

Cu aceste cuvinte David i-a oprit pe oamenii săi şi nu i-a lăsat să-l atace pe Saul. Apoi Saul s-a sculat, a părăsit peştera şi şi-a continuat drumul.

8 D avid also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance.

După aceea s-a sculat şi David şi a ieşit din peşteră. El a strigat după Saul: – O, rege, stăpânul meu! Când Saul s-a uitat în urma sa, David s-a plecat cu faţa la pământ şi s-a închinat.

9 A nd David said to Saul, Wherefore hearkenest thou to men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

I-a spus lui Saul: – De ce asculţi cuvintele oamenilor care spun că David doreşte să-ţi facă rău?

10 B ehold, this day thine eyes have seen how that Jehovah had delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee; but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is Jehovah's anointed.

În ziua aceasta ochii tăi au văzut că Domnul te-a dat în mâna mea, chiar astăzi, în peşteră. Cineva a spus să te ucid, dar eu am avut milă de tine şi am hotărât să nu ridic mâna asupra stăpânului meu pentru că el este unsul Domnului.

11 M oreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee, though thou huntest after my life to take it.

Priveşte, părintele meu, priveşte colţul mantiei tale în mâna mea. Prin faptul că am tăiat colţul mantiei tale şi nu te-am ucis, să înţelegi şi să recunoşti că nu sunt vinovat de răutate sau de răzvrătire şi că nu am păcătuit împotriva ta. Cu toate acestea, tu mă pândeşti ca să-mi iei viaţa.

12 J ehovah judge between me and thee, and Jehovah avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

Domnul să judece între mine şi tine şi Domnul să mă răzbune faţă de tine. Mâna mea însă nu va fi împotriva ta.

13 A s saith the proverb of the ancients, Out of the wicked cometh forth wickedness; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

Vorba vechiului proverb: „Răul de la cei răi iese.“ Mâna mea însă nu va fi împotriva ta.

14 A fter whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

După cine a ieşit regele lui Israel? Pe cine urmăreşti? Un câine mort? Un singur purice?

15 J ehovah therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.

Domnul să fie judecător şi să judece între mine şi tine; să privească, să-mi susţină cauza şi să mă izbăvească din mâna ta!

16 A nd it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

Când David a terminat de spus aceste cuvinte lui Saul, acesta a zis: –Tu eşti, cu adevărat, fiul meu David? Apoi a plâns cu voce tare,

17 A nd he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rendered unto me good, whereas I have rendered unto thee evil.

zicându-i lui David: – Tu eşti mai drept decât mine, pentru că tu m-ai tratat bine, chiar dacă eu te-am tratat rău.

18 A nd thou hast declared this day how that thou hast dealt well with me, forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me up into thy hand, thou killedst me not.

Astăzi ai dovedit bunătate faţă de mine pentru că, deşi Domnul mă dăduse în mâna ta, tu nu m-ai ucis.

19 F or if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Jehovah reward thee good for that which thou hast done unto me this day.

Dacă un om îşi întâlneşte duşmanul, oare îi dă drumul cu bine? Domnul să-ţi răsplătească astăzi cu bine ceea ce ai făcut pentru mine!

20 A nd now, behold, I know that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand.

Acum, ştiu sigur că tu vei domni şi că tronul lui Israel va fi al tău!

21 S wear now therefore unto me by Jehovah, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.

Jură-mi pe Domnul dar că nu îi vei stârpi pe urmaşii mei după mine şi că nu îmi vei şterge numele din familia tatălui meu.

22 A nd David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the stronghold.

David i-a jurat lui Saul, după care Saul a plecat acasă. În timpul acesta David cu oamenii săi s-au suit spre fortăreaţă.
