1 A nd it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:

Aconteció que entre tanto que Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo, después de recorrer las regiones superiores, vino a Éfeso, y hallando a ciertos discípulos,

2 a nd he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given.

les preguntó: —¿Recibisteis el Espíritu Santo cuando creísteis? Ellos le dijeron: —Ni siquiera habíamos oído que hubiera Espíritu Santo.

3 A nd he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism.

Entonces dijo: —¿En qué, pues, fuisteis bautizados? Ellos dijeron: —En el bautismo de Juan.

4 A nd Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

Dijo Pablo: —Juan bautizó con bautismo de arrepentimiento, diciendo al pueblo que creyeran en aquel que vendría después de él, esto es, en Jesús el Cristo.

5 A nd when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

Cuando oyeron esto, fueron bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús.

6 A nd when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Y habiéndoles impuesto Pablo las manos, vino sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo; y hablaban en lenguas y profetizaban.

7 A nd they were in all about twelve men.

Eran entre todos unos doce hombres.

8 A nd he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Entrando Pablo en la sinagoga, habló con valentía por espacio de tres meses, discutiendo y persuadiendo acerca del reino de Dios.

9 B ut when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

Pero como algunos se rehusaban a creer y maldecían el Camino delante de la multitud, Pablo se apartó de ellos y separó a los discípulos, discutiendo cada día en la escuela de uno llamado Tiranno.

10 A nd this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

Así continuó por espacio de dos años, de manera que todos los que habitaban en Asia, judíos y griegos, oyeron la palabra del Señor Jesús.

11 A nd God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

Y hacía Dios milagros extraordinarios por mano de Pablo,

12 i nsomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out.

de tal manera que hasta los pañuelos o delantales que habían tocado su cuerpo eran llevados a los enfermos, y las enfermedades se iban de ellos, y los espíritus malos salían.

13 B ut certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

Pero algunos de los judíos, exorcistas ambulantes, intentaron invocar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los que tenían espíritus malos, diciendo: «¡Os conjuro por Jesús, el que predica Pablo!»

14 A nd there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this.

Había siete hijos de un tal Esceva, judío, jefe de los sacerdotes, que hacían esto.

15 A nd the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye?

Pero respondiendo el espíritu malo, dijo: «A Jesús conozco y sé quién es Pablo, pero vosotros, ¿quiénes sois?»

16 A nd the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

El hombre en quien estaba el espíritu malo, saltando sobre ellos y dominándolos, pudo más que ellos, de tal manera que huyeron de aquella casa desnudos y heridos.

17 A nd this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

Esto fue notorio a todos los que habitaban en Éfeso, así judíos como griegos; y tuvieron temor todos ellos, y era glorificado el nombre del Señor Jesús.

18 M any also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.

Muchos de los que habían creído venían, confesando y dando cuenta de sus hechos.

19 A nd not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Asimismo muchos de los que habían practicado la magia trajeron los libros y los quemaron delante de todos; y hecha la cuenta de su valor, hallaron que era de cincuenta mil piezas de plata.

20 S o mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.

Así crecía y prevalecía poderosamente la palabra del Señor.

21 N ow after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

Pasadas estas cosas, Pablo se propuso en su espíritu ir a Jerusalén, después de recorrer Macedonia y Acaya. Decía él: «Después que haya estado allí, me será necesario ver también Roma.»

22 A nd having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

Envió entonces a Macedonia a dos de los que lo ayudaban, Timoteo y Erasto, y él se quedó por algún tiempo en Asia. El alboroto en Éfeso

23 A nd about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

Hubo por aquel tiempo un disturbio no pequeño acerca del Camino,

24 F or a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen;

porque un platero llamado Demetrio, que hacía de plata templecillos de Diana, daba no poca ganancia a los artífices;

25 w hom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.

a los cuales, reunidos con los obreros del mismo oficio, dijo: —Sabéis que de este oficio obtenemos nuestra riqueza;

26 A nd ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:

pero veis y oís que este Pablo, no solamente en Éfeso, sino en casi toda Asia, ha apartado a mucha gente con persuasión, diciendo que no son dioses los que se hacen con las manos.

27 a nd not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

Y no solamente hay peligro de que este nuestro negocio venga a desacreditarse, sino también que el templo de la gran diosa Diana sea estimado en nada y comience a ser destruida la majestad de aquella a quien venera toda Asia y el mundo entero.

28 A nd when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus.

Cuando oyeron estas cosas se llenaron de ira, y gritaron, diciendo: «¡Grande es Diana de los efesios!»

29 A nd the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel.

La ciudad se llenó de confusión, y a una se lanzaron al teatro, arrebatando a Gayo y a Aristarco, macedonios, compañeros de Pablo.

30 A nd when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

Pablo quería salir al pueblo, pero los discípulos no lo dejaron.

31 A nd certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre.

También algunas de las autoridades de Asia, que eran amigos suyos, le enviaron recado rogándole que no se presentara en el teatro.

32 S ome therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

Unos, pues, gritaban una cosa y otros otra, porque la concurrencia estaba confusa y la mayoría no sabía por qué se habían reunido.

33 A nd they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defense unto the people.

De entre la multitud sacaron a Alejandro, empujado por los judíos. Y Alejandro, pidiendo silencio con la mano, quiso hablar en su defensa ante el pueblo.

34 B ut when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Pero cuando se dieron cuenta de que era judío, todos a una voz gritaron casi por dos horas: «¡Grande es Diana de los efesios!»

35 A nd when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

Entonces el escribano, cuando apaciguó a la multitud, dijo: «Efesios, ¿y quién es el hombre que no sabe que la ciudad de los efesios es guardiana del templo de la gran diosa Diana, y de la imagen venida de Júpiter?

36 S eeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

Puesto que esto no puede contradecirse, es necesario que os apacigüéis, y que nada hagáis precipitadamente,

37 F or ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.

porque habéis traído a estos hombres, que no son sacrílegos ni blasfemadores de vuestra diosa.

38 I f therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.

Que si Demetrio y los artífices que están con él tienen pleito contra alguno, audiencias se conceden y procónsules hay; acúsense los unos a los otros.

39 B ut if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.

Y si demandáis alguna otra cosa, en legítima asamblea se puede decidir,

40 F or indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse.

pues hay peligro de que seamos acusados de sedición por esto de hoy, ya que no existe causa alguna por la cual podamos dar razón de este alboroto.»

41 A nd when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

Y habiendo dicho esto, despidió la asamblea.
