1 A nd Jehovah said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go: I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

Dijo Jehová a Samuel: —¿Hasta cuándo llorarás por Saúl, habiéndolo yo rechazado para que no reine sobre Israel? Llena tu cuerno de aceite y ven, te enviaré a Isaí de Belén, porque de entre sus hijos me he elegido un rey.

2 A nd Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.

Samuel preguntó: —¿Cómo iré? Si Saúl lo supiera, me mataría. Jehová respondió: —Toma contigo una becerra de la vacada, y di: “A ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová he venido.”

3 A nd call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

Invita a Isaí al sacrificio y yo te enseñaré lo que has de hacer; me ungirás al que yo te diga.

4 A nd Samuel did that which Jehovah spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

Hizo, pues, Samuel como le dijo Jehová. Luego que él llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron a recibirlo con miedo, y le preguntaron: —¿Es pacífica tu venida?

5 A nd he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto Jehovah: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

—Sí, vengo a ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová; santificaos y venid conmigo al sacrificio —respondió él. Luego santificó él a Isaí y a sus hijos, y los invitó al sacrificio.

6 A nd it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.

Aconteció que cuando ellos vinieron, vio él a Eliab, y se dijo: «De cierto delante de Jehová está su ungido.»

7 B ut Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Jehovah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

Pero Jehová respondió a Samuel: —No mires a su parecer, ni a lo grande de su estatura, porque yo lo desecho; porque Jehová no mira lo que mira el hombre, pues el hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos, pero Jehová mira el corazón.

8 T hen Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

Entonces llamó Isaí a Abinadab y lo hizo pasar delante de Samuel, el cual dijo: —Tampoco a éste ha escogido Jehová.

9 T hen Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

Hizo luego pasar Isaí a Sama. Pero Samuel dijo: —Tampoco a éste ha elegido Jehová.

10 A nd Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Jehovah hath not chosen these.

Hizo luego pasar Isaí siete hijos suyos delante de Samuel; pero Samuel dijo a Isaí: —Jehová no ha elegido a estos.

11 A nd Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither.

Entonces dijo Samuel a Isaí: —¿Son estos todos tus hijos? Isaí respondió: —Queda aún el menor, que apacienta las ovejas. Y dijo Samuel a Isaí: —Envía por él, porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga aquí.

12 A nd he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

Envió, pues, por él, y lo hizo entrar. Era rubio, de hermosos ojos y de buen parecer. Entonces Jehová dijo: «Levántate y úngelo, porque éste es.»

13 T hen Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite y lo ungió en medio de sus hermanos. A partir de aquel día vino sobre David el espíritu de Jehová. Se levantó luego Samuel y regresó a Ramá. David entra al servicio de Saúl

14 N ow the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.

El espíritu de Jehová se apartó de Saúl, y un espíritu malo de parte de Jehová lo atormentaba.

15 A nd Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron: —Mira, un espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta.

16 L et our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

Diga, pues, nuestro señor a tus siervos que están en tu presencia, que busquen a alguno que sepa tocar el arpa, para que cuando esté sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, toque con su mano y tengas alivio.

17 A nd Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

Saúl respondió a sus criados: —Buscadme ahora, pues, a alguno que toque bien, y traédmelo.

18 T hen answered one of the young men, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Jehovah is with him.

Entonces uno de los criados respondió: —He visto a un hijo de Isaí de Belén que sabe tocar; es valiente y vigoroso, hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, hermoso, y Jehová está con él.

19 W herefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.

Entonces Saúl envió mensajeros a Isaí, diciendo: «Envíame a David tu hijo, el que está con las ovejas.»

20 A nd Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

Y tomó Isaí un asno cargado de pan, una vasija de vino y un cabrito, y lo envió a Saúl por medio de David, su hijo.

21 A nd David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer.

David se presentó ante Saúl y se puso a su servicio. Saúl lo amó mucho y lo hizo su paje de armas.

22 A nd Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight.

Luego mandó a decir a Isaí: «Te ruego que David se quede conmigo, pues ha hallado gracia a mis ojos.»

23 A nd it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Así, cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios venía sobre Saúl, David tomaba el arpa y la tocaba. Saúl se aliviaba y se sentía mejor, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.
