1 B rethren and fathers, hear ye the defence which I now make unto you.

«Hermanos y padres, oíd ahora mi defensa ante vosotros.»

2 A nd when they heard that he spake unto them in the Hebrew language, they were the more quiet: and he saith,

Al oír que les hablaba en lengua hebrea, guardaron más silencio. Él les dijo:

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as ye all are this day:

«Yo de cierto soy judío, nacido en Tarso de Cilicia, pero criado en esta ciudad, instruido a los pies de Gamaliel, estrictamente conforme a la Ley de nuestros padres, celoso de Dios como hoy lo sois todos vosotros.

4 a nd I persecuted this Way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

Perseguía yo este Camino hasta la muerte, prendiendo y entregando en cárceles a hombres y mujeres;

5 A s also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and journeyed to Damascus to bring them also that were there unto Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

como el Sumo sacerdote también me es testigo, y todos los ancianos, de quienes también recibí cartas para los hermanos, fui a Damasco para traer presos a Jerusalén también a los que estuvieran allí, para que fueran castigados. Pablo relata su conversión

6 A nd it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and drew nigh unto Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

»Pero aconteció que yendo yo, al llegar cerca de Damasco, como a mediodía, de repente me rodeó mucha luz del cielo.

7 A nd I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Caí al suelo y oí una voz que me decía: “Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues?”

8 A nd I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

Yo entonces respondí: “¿Quién eres, Señor?” Me dijo: “Yo soy Jesús de Nazaret, a quien tú persigues.”

9 A nd they that were with me beheld indeed the light, but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

Los que estaban conmigo vieron a la verdad la luz, y se espantaron, pero no entendieron la voz del que hablaba conmigo.

10 A nd I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

Yo dije: “¿Qué haré, Señor?” Y el Señor me dijo: “Levántate y vete a Damasco, y allí se te dirá todo lo que está ordenado que hagas.”

11 A nd when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus.

Como yo no veía a causa de aquella luz resplandeciente, llegué a Damasco llevado de la mano por los que estaban conmigo.

12 A nd one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews that dwelt there,

»Entonces uno llamado Ananías, hombre piadoso según la Ley, que tenía buen testimonio de todos los judíos que allí habitaban,

13 c ame unto me, and standing by me said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And in that very hour I looked up on him.

vino a mí y, acercándose, me dijo: “Hermano Saulo, recibe la vista.” Y yo en aquella misma hora recobré la vista y lo miré.

14 A nd he said, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

Él dijo: “El Dios de nuestros padres te ha escogido para que conozcas su voluntad, veas al Justo y oigas la voz de su boca,

15 F or thou shalt be a witness for him unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

porque serás testigo suyo ante todos los hombres, de lo que has visto y oído.

16 A nd now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.

Ahora, pues, ¿por qué te detienes? Levántate, bautízate y lava tus pecados invocando su nombre.” Pablo es enviado a los gentiles

17 A nd it came to pass, that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,

»Volví a Jerusalén, y mientras estaba orando en el Templo me sobrevino un éxtasis.

18 a nd saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem; because they will not receive of thee testimony concerning me.

Vi al Señor, que me decía: “Date prisa y sal prontamente de Jerusalén, porque no recibirán tu testimonio acerca de mí.”

19 A nd I said, Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

Yo dije: “Señor, ellos saben que yo encarcelaba y azotaba en todas las sinagogas a los que creían en ti;

20 a nd when the blood of Stephen thy witness was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting, and keeping the garments of them that slew him.

y cuando se derramaba la sangre de Esteban, tu testigo, yo mismo también estaba presente y consentía en su muerte, y guardaba las ropas de los que lo mataban.”

21 A nd he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee forth far hence unto the Gentiles.

Pero me dijo: “Ve, porque yo te enviaré lejos, a los gentiles.”» Pablo en manos del comandante

22 A nd they gave him audience unto this word; and they lifted up their voice, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

Lo oyeron hasta esta palabra; entonces alzaron la voz, diciendo: —¡Quita de la tierra a tal hombre, porque no conviene que viva!

23 A nd as they cried out, and threw off their garments, and cast dust into the air,

Y como ellos gritaban, arrojaban sus ropas y lanzaban polvo al aire,

24 t he chief captain commanded him be brought into the castle, bidding that he should be examined by scourging, that he might know for what cause they so shouted against him.

mandó el comandante que lo metieran en la fortaleza y ordenó que fuera azotado para que hablara, a fin de saber por qué causa gritaban así contra él.

25 A nd when they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

Pero cuando lo ataban con correas, Pablo dijo al centurión que estaba presente: —¿Os está permitido azotar a un ciudadano romano sin haber sido condenado?

26 A nd when the centurion heard it, he went to the chief captain and told him, saying, What art thou about to do? for this man is a Roman.

Cuando el centurión oyó esto, fue y dio aviso al comandante, diciendo: —¿Qué vas a hacer? Porque este hombre es ciudadano romano.

27 A nd the chief captain came and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? And he said, Yea.

Se acercó el comandante y le dijo: —Dime, ¿eres tú ciudadano romano? Él dijo: —Sí.

28 A nd the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this citizenship. And Paul said, But I am a Roman born.

Respondió el comandante: —Yo con una gran suma adquirí esta ciudadanía. Entonces Pablo dijo: —Pero yo lo soy de nacimiento.

29 T hey then that were about to examine him straightway departed from him: and the chief captain also was afraid when he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

Así que, al punto se apartaron de él los que le iban a dar tormento; y aun el comandante, al saber que era ciudadano romano, también tuvo temor por haberlo atado. Pablo ante el Concilio

30 B ut on the morrow, desiring to know the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

Al día siguiente, queriendo saber con certeza la causa por la cual lo acusaban los judíos, lo soltó de las cadenas, y mandó venir a los principales sacerdotes y a todo el Concilio, y sacando a Pablo, lo presentó ante ellos.
