1 T hen Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

Entonces respondió Jehová a Job desde un torbellino y dijo:

2 W ho is this that darkeneth counsel By words without knowledge?

«¿Quién es ése que oscurece el consejo con palabras sin sabiduría?

3 G ird up now thy loins like a man; For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

Ahora cíñete la cintura como un hombre: yo te preguntaré y tú me contestarás.

4 W here wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding.

»¿Dónde estabas tú cuando yo fundaba la tierra? ¡Házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia!

5 W ho determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?

¿Quién dispuso sus medidas, si es que lo sabes? ¿O quién tendió sobre ella la cuerda de medir?

6 W hereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus bases? ¿O quién puso su piedra angular,

7 W hen the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

cuando alababan juntas todas las estrellas del alba y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?

8 O r who shut up the sea with doors, When it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb;

»¿Quién encerró con puertas el mar, cuando se derramaba saliéndose de su seno,

9 W hen I made clouds the garment thereof, And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,

cuando yo le puse nubes por vestidura y oscuridad por faja?

10 A nd marked out for it my bound, And set bars and doors,

Yo establecí para él los límites; le puse puertas y cerrojo,

11 A nd said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

y dije: “Hasta aquí llegarás y no pasarás adelante; ahí parará el orgullo de tus olas.”

12 H ast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, And caused the dayspring to know its place;

¿Has dado órdenes a la mañana alguna vez en tu vida? ¿Le has mostrado al alba su lugar,

13 T hat it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it?

para que ocupe los confines de la tierra y sean sacudidos de ella los malvados?

14 I t is changed as clay under the seal; And all things stand forth as a garment:

Ella cambia luego de aspecto como el barro bajo el sello, y toma el aspecto de una vestidura;

15 A nd from the wicked their light is withholden, And the high arm is broken.

mas la luz les es quitada a los malvados y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.

16 H ast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

»¿Has penetrado tú hasta las fuentes del mar y has caminado escudriñando el abismo?

17 H ave the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¿Te han sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?

18 H ast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if thou knowest it all.

¿Has considerado tú la extensión de la tierra? ¡Declara si sabes todo esto!

19 W here is the way to the dwelling of light? And as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

»¿Dónde está el camino que conduce a la morada de la luz? ¿Y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas,

20 T hat thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof?

para que las lleves a sus límites y conozcas las sendas de su casa?

21 D oubtless, thou knowest, for thou wast then born, And the number of thy days is great!

¡Quizá tú lo sabes, puesto que entonces ya habías nacido y es grande el número de tus días!

22 H ast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

»¿Has penetrado tú hasta los depósitos de la nieve? ¿Has visto los depósitos del granizo,

23 W hich I have reserved against the time of trouble, Against the day of battle and war?

que tengo reservados para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?

24 B y what way is the light parted, Or the east wind scattered upon the earth?

¿Por qué camino se difunde la luz y se esparce el viento del este sobre la tierra?

25 W ho hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, Or the way for the lightning of the thunder;

»¿Quién le abrió un cauce al turbión y un camino a los relámpagos y a los truenos,

26 T o cause it to rain on a land where no man is; On the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no vive ningún ser humano,

27 T o satisfy the waste and desolate ground, And to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

para saciar la tierra desierta y sin cultivo y para hacer que brote la tierna hierba?

28 H ath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

»¿Tiene padre la lluvia? ¿Quién engendró las gotas del rocío?

29 O ut of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? Y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la dio a luz?

30 T he waters hide themselves and become like stone, And the face of the deep is frozen.

Las aguas se endurecen como piedra y se congela la faz del abismo.

31 C anst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the bands of Orion?

»¿Podrás tú anudar los lazos de las Pléyades? ¿Desatarás las ligaduras de Orión?

32 C anst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train?

¿Haces salir a su tiempo las constelaciones de los cielos? ¿Guías a la Osa Mayor con sus hijos?

33 K nowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?

¿Conoces las leyes de los cielos? ¿Dispones tú su dominio en la tierra?

34 C anst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover thee?

»¿Puedes alzar tu voz a las nubes para que te cubra gran cantidad de agua?

35 C anst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, And say unto thee, Here we are?

¿Envías tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan, o para que te digan: “Aquí estamos”?

36 W ho hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind?

¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el corazón? ¿Quién dio inteligencia al espíritu?

37 W ho can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

¿Quién cuenta con sabiduría lo que hay en los cielos? Y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién hace que se inclinen,

38 W hen the dust runneth into a mass, And the clods cleave fast together?

cuando el polvo se ha endurecido y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?

39 C anst thou hunt the prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

»¿Cazarás tú la presa para el león? ¿Saciarás el hambre de sus cachorros,

40 W hen they couch in their dens, And abide in the covert to lie in wait?

cuando están echados en sus guaridas o se ponen al acecho en la espesura?

41 W ho provideth for the raven his prey, When his young ones cry unto God, And wander for lack of food?

¿Quién le prepara al cuervo su alimento, cuando sus polluelos claman a Dios y andan errantes por falta de comida?
