1 T hen Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

Después subió Nahas, el amonita, y acampó contra Jabes de Galaad. Y todos los de Jabes dijeron a Nahas: —Haz alianza con nosotros y te serviremos.

2 A nd Nahash the Ammonite said unto them, On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

Nahas, el amonita, les respondió: —Con esta condición haré alianza con vosotros, que a todos y cada uno de vosotros le saque el ojo derecho, y ponga esta afrenta sobre todo Israel.

3 A nd the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the borders of Israel; and then, if there be none to save us, we will come out to thee.

Entonces los ancianos de Jabes le dijeron: —Danos siete días para que enviemos mensajeros por todo el territorio de Israel, y si no hay quien nos defienda, nos rendiremos a ti.

4 T hen came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and spake these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

Cuando los mensajeros llegaron a Gabaa de Saúl y dijeron estas palabras a oídos del pueblo, todo el pueblo alzó su voz y lloró.

5 A nd, behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

En ese momento venía Saúl del campo detrás de los bueyes, y preguntó: —¿Qué tiene el pueblo que está llorando? Y le contaron las palabras de los hombres de Jabes.

6 A nd the Spirit of God came mightily upon Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.

Al oír Saúl estas palabras, el espíritu de Dios vino sobre él con poder, y se apoderó de él una violenta ira.

7 A nd he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the dread of Jehovah fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

Tomó entonces un par de bueyes, los cortó en trozos y los envió por todo el territorio de Israel por medio de mensajeros, diciendo: «Así se hará con los bueyes del que no salga detrás de Saúl y detrás de Samuel.» El temor de Jehová cayó sobre el pueblo, y salieron todos como un solo hombre.

8 A nd he numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

Los contó Saúl en Bezec, y eran los hijos de Israel trescientos mil, y treinta mil los hombres de Judá.

9 A nd they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have deliverance. And the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Luego respondieron a los mensajeros que habían venido: —Así diréis a los de Jabes de Galaad: “Mañana, al calentar el sol, seréis librados.” Fueron los mensajeros y lo anunciaron a los de Jabes, que se alegraron.

10 T herefore the men of Jabesh said, To-morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

Y los de Jabes dijeron a los enemigos: —Mañana nos rendiremos a vosotros, para que hagáis con nosotros lo que bien os parezca.

11 A nd it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and smote the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they that remained were scattered, so that not two of them were left together.

Aconteció que al día siguiente dispuso Saúl al pueblo en tres compañías, que irrumpieron en medio del campamento en la vigilia de la mañana y abatieron a los amonitas hasta el mediodía. Los que quedaron fueron dispersados, de tal manera que no quedaron dos de ellos juntos.

12 A nd the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

Entonces el pueblo dijo a Samuel: —¿Quiénes son los que decían: “Acaso va a reinar Saúl sobre nosotros”? Dadnos esos hombres y los mataremos.

13 A nd Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day; for to-day Jehovah hath wrought deliverance in Israel.

Pero Saúl dijo: —No morirá hoy ninguno, porque hoy Jehová ha traído salvación a Israel.

14 T hen said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

Y Samuel dijo al pueblo: —Venid, vamos a Gilgal para instaurar allí el reino.

15 A nd all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Jehovah in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Todo el pueblo fue a Gilgal, y allí en Gilgal, delante de Jehová, invistieron a Saúl como rey. Y sacrificaron allí ofrendas de paz delante de Jehová, y se alegraron mucho Saúl y todos los de Israel.
