1 N ow these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon,

Éstas son las palabras de la carta que el profeta Jeremías envió desde Jerusalén a los ancianos que habían quedado de los que fueron deportados, a los sacerdotes y profetas, y a todo el pueblo que Nabucodonosor llevó cautivo de Jerusalén a Babilonia

2 ( after that Jeconiah the king, and the queen-mother, and the eunuchs, and the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem,)

(después que salió el rey Jeconías, la reina, los del palacio, los gobernantes de Judá y de Jerusalén, los artesanos y los ingenieros de Jerusalén),

3 b y the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,) saying,

por medio de Elasa hijo de Safán, y de Gemarías hijo de Hilcías, a quienes envió Sedequías, rey de Judá, a Babilonia, a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia. La carta decía:

4 T hus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem unto Babylon:

«Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, a todos los de la cautividad que hice transportar de Jerusalén a Babilonia:

5 B uild ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

Edificad casas y habitadlas; plantad huertos y comed del fruto de ellos.

6 T ake ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply ye there, and be not diminished.

Casaos y engendrad hijos e hijas; dad mujeres a vuestros hijos y dad maridos a vuestras hijas, para que tengan hijos e hijas. Multiplicaos allá, y no disminuyáis.

7 A nd seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto Jehovah for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

Procurad la paz de la ciudad a la cual os hice transportar, y rogad por ella a Jehová, porque en su paz tendréis vosotros paz.

8 F or thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Let not your prophets that are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither hearken ye to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

Porque así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: No os engañen vuestros profetas que están entre vosotros, ni vuestros adivinos, ni hagáis caso de los sueños que sueñan.

9 F or they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith Jehovah.

Porque falsamente os profetizan en mi nombre. Yo no los envié, ha dicho Jehová.

10 F or thus saith Jehovah, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

Porque así dijo Jehová: Cuando en Babilonia se cumplan los setenta años, yo os visitaré y despertaré sobre vosotros mi buena palabra, para haceros volver a este lugar.

11 F or I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end.

Porque yo sé los pensamientos que tengo acerca de vosotros, dice Jehová, pensamientos de paz y no de mal, para daros el fin que esperáis.

12 A nd ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Entonces me invocaréis. Vendréis y oraréis a mí, y yo os escucharé.

13 A nd ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Me buscaréis y me hallaréis, porque me buscaréis de todo vuestro corazón.

14 A nd I will be found of you, saith Jehovah, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places wither I have driven you, saith Jehovah; and I will bring you again unto the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

Seré hallado por vosotros, dice Jehová; haré volver a vuestros cautivos y os reuniré de todas las naciones y de todos los lugares adonde os arrojé, dice Jehová. Y os haré volver al lugar de donde os hice llevar.

15 B ecause ye have said, Jehovah hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

Pero vosotros habéis dicho: “Jehová nos ha levantado profetas en Babilonia.”

16 t hus saith Jehovah concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

Pero así ha dicho Jehová acerca del rey que está sentado sobre el trono de David, y acerca de todo el pueblo que habita en esta ciudad, de vuestros hermanos que no partieron con vosotros al cautiverio,

17 t hus saith Jehovah of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.

así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: Yo envío contra ellos espada, hambre y peste, y los pondré como los higos malos, que de tan malos no se pueden comer.

18 A nd I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them;

Los perseguiré con espada, con hambre y con peste, y los haré el horror de todos los reinos de la tierra, objeto de aversión, de espanto, de burla y de afrenta ante todas las naciones entre las cuales los he arrojado;

19 b ecause they have not hearkened to my words, saith Jehovah, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith Jehovah.

por cuanto no escucharon mis palabras, dice Jehová, que les envié por mis siervos los profetas, desde el principio y sin cesar. No habéis escuchado, dice Jehová.

20 H ear ye therefore the word of Jehovah, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

¡Escuchad, pues, palabra de Jehová, vosotros todos los deportados que envié de Jerusalén a Babilonia!

21 T hus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie unto you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, acerca de Acab hijo de Colaías, y acerca de Sedequías hijo de Maasías, que os profetizan falsamente en mi nombre: Yo los entrego en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y él los matará delante de vuestros ojos.

22 a nd of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah that are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

Y todos los deportados de Judá que están en Babilonia harán de ellos una maldición, diciendo: “¡Póngate Jehová como a Sedequías y como a Acab, a quienes asó al fuego el rey de Babilonia!”

23 b ecause they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knoweth, and am witness, saith Jehovah.

Porque hicieron maldad en Israel: cometieron adulterio con las mujeres de sus prójimos y falsamente hablaron en mi nombre palabra que no les mandé; lo cual yo sé y testifico, dice Jehová.»

24 A nd concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou shalt speak, saying,

«Y a Semaías, de Nehelam, hablarás, diciendo:

25 T hus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thine own name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

“Así habló Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: Tú enviaste cartas en tu nombre a todo el pueblo que está en Jerusalén, y al sacerdote Sofonías hijo de Maasías, y a todos los sacerdotes, diciendo:

26 J ehovah hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Jehovah, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in shackles.

‘Jehová te ha puesto por sacerdote en lugar del sacerdote Joiada, para que te encargues en la casa de Jehová de todo loco que profetice, poniéndolo en el calabozo y en el cepo.’

27 N ow therefore, why hast thou not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who maketh himself a prophet to you,

¿Por qué, pues, no has reprendido ahora a Jeremías de Anatot, que os profetiza?

28 f orasmuch as he hath sent unto us in Babylon, saying, The captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them?

Porque él nos envió a decir en Babilonia: ‘Largo será el cautiverio; edificad casas y habitadlas; plantad huertos y comed el fruto de ellos.’”»

29 A nd Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

El sacerdote Sofonías había leído esta carta a oídos del profeta Jeremías.

30 T hen came the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah, saying,

Y vino palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, diciendo:

31 S end to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he hath caused you to trust in a lie;

«Envía a decir a todos los cautivos: “Así ha dicho Jehová acerca de Semaías, de Nehelam: Por cuanto os profetizó Semaías, sin que yo lo hubiera enviado, y os hizo confiar en mentira,

32 t herefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he behold the good that I will do unto my people, saith Jehovah, because he hath spoken rebellion against Jehovah.

por eso, así ha dicho Jehová: Yo castigaré a Semaías, de Nehelam, y a su descendencia; no tendrá varón que habite en medio de este pueblo, ni verá el bien que haré yo a mi pueblo, dice Jehová; porque contra Jehová ha hablado rebelión.”»
