1 C all now; is there any that will answer thee? And to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

2 F or vexation killeth the foolish man, And jealousy slayeth the silly one.

Es cierto que al necio lo mata la ira y al codicioso lo consume la envidia.

3 I have seen the foolish taking root: But suddenly I cursed his habitation.

Yo he visto que el necio echaba raíces, y en la misma hora maldije su morada.

4 H is children are far from safety, And they are crushed in the gate, Neither is there any to deliver them:

Sus hijos carecerán de socorro: en la puerta serán quebrantados y no habrá quien los libre.

5 W hose harvest the hungry eateth up, And taketh it even out of the thorns; And the snare gapeth for their substance.

Su cosecha se la comerán los hambrientos, sacándola de entre los espinos; y los sedientos se beberán su hacienda.

6 F or affliction cometh not forth from the dust, Neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

Porque la aflicción no sale del polvo ni la fatiga brota de la tierra.

7 B ut man is born unto trouble, As the sparks fly upward.

Pero como las chispas se levantan para volar por el aire, así el hombre nace para la desdicha.

8 B ut as for me, I would seek unto God, And unto God would I commit my cause;

Ciertamente yo buscaría a Dios y le encomendaría mi causa.

9 W ho doeth great things and unsearchable, Marvellous things without number:

Él hace cosas grandes e inescrutables, y maravillas sin número.

10 W ho giveth rain upon the earth, And sendeth waters upon the fields;

Derrama la lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra y envía las aguas sobre los campos.

11 S o that he setteth up on high those that are low, And those that mourn are exalted to safety.

Pone en alto a los humildes y a los enlutados da seguridad.

12 H e frustrateth the devices of the crafty, So that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

Frustra los pensamientos de los astutos, para hacer vana la obra de sus manos.

13 H e taketh the wise in their own craftiness; And the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.

Atrapa a los sabios en su propia astucia y frustra los planes de los perversos.

14 T hey meet with darkness in the day-time, And grope at noonday as in the night.

De día tropiezan con tinieblas; a mediodía andan a tientas, como de noche.

15 B ut he saveth from the sword of their mouth, Even the needy from the hand of the mighty.

Él libra de la espada al pobre, de la boca de los malvados y de la mano del violento;

16 S o the poor hath hope, And iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

por eso, el necesitado tiene esperanza, pero la iniquidad cierra la boca.

17 B ehold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.

»Bienaventurado es el hombre a quien Dios corrige; por tanto, no desprecies la reprensión del Todopoderoso.

18 F or he maketh sore, and bindeth up; He woundeth, and his hands make whole.

Porque él es quien hace la herida, pero él la venda; él golpea, pero sus manos curan.

19 H e will deliver thee in six troubles; Yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

En seis tribulaciones te librará, y en la séptima no te tocará el mal.

20 I n famine he will redeem thee from death; And in war from the power of the sword.

En tiempo de hambre te salvará de la muerte, y del poder de la espada en la guerra.

21 T hou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; Neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

Del azote de la lengua serás protegido y no temerás cuando venga la destrucción.

22 A t destruction and dearth thou shalt laugh; Neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

De la destrucción y del hambre te reirás y no temerás a las fieras del campo,

23 F or thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

pues aun con las piedras del campo harás un pacto y las fieras del campo estarán en paz contigo.

24 A nd thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; And thou shalt visit thy fold, and shalt miss nothing.

Sabrás que hay paz en tu tienda: visitarás tu morada y nada te faltará.

25 T hou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, And thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

Asimismo verás que tu descendencia es mucha, que tu prole es como la hierba de la tierra.

26 T hou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, Like as a shock of grain cometh in in its season.

Llegarás con vigor a la sepultura, como gavilla de trigo recogido a su tiempo.

27 L o this, we have searched it, so it is; Hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

Nosotros lo hemos inquirido, y esto es así. Escúchalo y conócelo para tu propio provecho.»
