1 A nd it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

Aconteció después de la muerte de Saúl, que vuelto David de derrotar a los amalecitas, estuvo dos días en Siclag.

2 i t came to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

Al tercer día, llegó uno del campamento de Saúl, con los vestidos rotos y la cabeza cubierta de tierra. Cuando se presentó ante David, se postró en tierra e hizo una reverencia.

3 A nd David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

David le preguntó: —¿De dónde vienes? —Me he escapado del campamento de Israel —le respondió él.

4 A nd David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

—¿Qué ha acontecido? Te ruego que me lo digas —le preguntó David. —El pueblo huyó de la batalla; han caído muchos del pueblo y murieron. También Saúl y su hijo Jonatán murieron —respondió él.

5 A nd David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?

Dijo David a aquel joven que le daba la noticia: —¿Cómo sabes que han muerto Saúl y su hijo Jonatán?

6 A nd the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him.

El joven que le daba la noticia respondió: —Casualmente fui al monte Gilboa, y hallé a Saúl que se apoyaba sobre su lanza; tras él venían carros y gente de a caballo.

7 A nd when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

Se volvió y al verme me llamó; yo respondí: “Heme aquí.”

8 A nd he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

Me preguntó: “¿Quién eres tú?” Yo le respondí: “Soy amalecita.”

9 A nd he said unto me, Stand, I pray thee, beside me, and slay me; for anguish hath taken hold of me, because my life is yet whole in me.

Luego me dijo: “Te ruego que te acerques y me mates, porque se ha apoderado de mí la angustia; pues aún sigo vivo.”

10 S o I stood beside him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

Yo entonces me acerqué y lo maté, porque sabía que no podía vivir después de su caída. Tomé la corona que llevaba sobre su cabeza y el brazalete que tenía en su brazo, y se los he traído aquí a mi señor.

11 T hen David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

Entonces David, tirando de sus vestidos, los rasgó, y lo mismo hicieron los hombres que estaban con él.

12 a nd they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

Lloraron, se lamentaron y ayunaron hasta la noche, por Saúl y por su hijo Jonatán, por el pueblo de Jehová y por la casa de Israel, pues habían caído al filo de la espada.

13 A nd David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.

David preguntó luego a aquel joven que le había traído la noticia: —¿De dónde eres tú? —Soy hijo de un extranjero, amalecita —respondió él.

14 A nd David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy Jehovah's anointed?

—¿Cómo no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para matar al ungido de Jehová? —le dijo David.

15 A nd David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him, so that he died.

Entonces llamó David a uno de sus hombres, y le dijo: —Ve y mátalo. Él lo hirió, y murió,

16 A nd David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain Jehovah's anointed.

mientras David decía: —Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, pues tu misma boca atestiguó contra ti, al decir: “Yo maté al ungido de Jehová.” Lamento de David por Saúl y Jonatán

17 A nd David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

David entonó este lamento por Saúl y Jonatán, su hijo,

18 ( and he bade them teach the children of Judah the song of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

y dijo que debía enseñarse a los hijos de Judá. Así está escrito en el libro de Jaser:

19 T hy glory, O Israel, is slain upon thy high places! How are the mighty fallen!

«¡Ha perecido la gloria de Israel sobre tus alturas! ¡Cómo han caído los valientes!

20 T ell it not in Gath, Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

No lo anunciéis en Gat, ni deis las nuevas en las plazas de Ascalón; para que no se alegren las hijas de los filisteos, para que no salten de gozo las hijas de los incircuncisos.

21 Y e mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings: For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

»Montes de Gilboa, ni rocío ni lluvia caiga sobre vosotros, ni seáis tierras de ofrendas; porque allí fue desechado el escudo de los valientes, el escudo de Saúl, como si no hubiera sido ungido con aceite.

22 F rom the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan turned not back, And the sword of Saul returned not empty.

»Sin la sangre de los muertos, sin la grasa de los valientes, el arco de Jonatán jamás retrocedía, ni la espada de Saúl volvió vacía.

23 S aul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they were not divided: They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions.

»Saúl y Jonatán, amados y queridos; inseparables en la vida, tampoco en su muerte fueron separados; más ligeros eran que águilas, más fuertes que leones.

24 Y e daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you in scarlet delicately, Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

»Hijas de Israel, llorad por Saúl, quien os vestía de escarlata y lino fino, quien adornaba vuestras ropas con ornamentos de oro.

25 H ow are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain upon thy high places.

¡Cómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla! ¡Jonatán, muerto en tus alturas!

26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: Very pleasant hast thou been unto me: Thy love to me was wonderful, Passing the love of women.

Angustia tengo por ti, Jonatán, hermano mío, cuán dulce fuiste conmigo. Más maravilloso me fue tu amor que el amor de las mujeres.

27 H ow are the mighty fallen, And the weapons of war perished!

¡Cómo han caído los valientes, cómo han perecido las armas de guerra!»
